Romney ad: Obama's the one cutting Medicare
The Romney campaign is out with a new ad that seeks to turn the tables on Democrats who are criticizing the Mitt Romney-Paul Ryan ticket for the proposed cuts to Medicare in Ryan's budget plan.
In the ad, a narrator tells viewers that "You paid in to Medicare for years. Every paycheck. Now when you need it, Obama has cut $716 billion from Medicare. Why? To pay for Obamacare. So now the money you paid for your guaranteed healthcare is going to a massive new government program that's not for you."
"The Romney-Ryan plan protects Medicare benefits for today's seniors and strengthens the plan for the next generation," the narrator adds.
The $716 billion figure is tied to a Congressional Budget Office finding that if the health care law was repealed, spending for Medicare would increase by an estimated $716 billion from 2013-2022.
As CBSNews.com explained yesterday, the cuts in question focus in part on the Medicare Advantage program that allows seniors to get their Medicare benefits through private insurance plans. Also reduced are hospital reimbursements and payments to other providers.
The biggest problem with the claim in the ad is that Ryan's own plan includes basically the same cuts to Medicare that are apparently so troubling to the Romney campaign.
(Watch: Obama, Ryan duel on Medicare.)
The savings in Medicare in the Affordable Care Act result from a cap in Medicare spending - the health care law caps Medicare spending at GDP growth plus 0.5 percent over ten years. That's significantly below the expected growth in costs, hence the "cuts."
Ryan's budget plan, after 2022, mandates that "the per capita cost of this reformed program for seniors reaching eligibility after 2023 could not exceed nominal GDP growth plus 0.5 percent."
In other words, both plans offer the same Medicare spending cap.
And while the health care law specifically mandates that Medicare benefits not be cut, the Ryan plan, with its voucher-like payments to seniors, offers no such assurances.

Obama admits funding Obamatax with Medicare. Also note where he says "IF we can bend the cost curve we'll reduce our deficit". That's a big IF. When have you EVER known big government to keep costs under control? Oh that's right...N-E-V-E-R. But you all keep on believing in big ole government to save the day. I'm sure the death panel will make an exception for you after they've overspent, have to cut costs, and can't afford to keep you alive. You know, just like they're doing in the UK. But don't take my word for it.

The Insurance industry is licking their chops understanding that FICA tax dollars are now theirs.
GO collect your troll pay.
People can not believe that Ryan with his basset hound eyes could be this Ayn Rand hateful. Seniors are not shocked, they are numbed, they can't believe it, did he really say that?
Yes Virginia, he really DID say that. He advocated throwing granny under the bus, backing up and running her over again. This guy is a MONSTER and people better wake up to that idea right away before it is too late.
Obama has not cut Medicare by anything. Very creative mathematics and classifying less future cost increases as cutting funds.
As I say: baldfaced lying.
This is the second big lie of the day. The first was a continuation on the "didn't build that" lie where the context was claimed to be "even worse than that!!!" by Mr. Romney. The cotext of course was only worse for Romney in that Obama was referring to public infrastructure.
1. Allows those of us 55 and older to stay in the current system.
2. Allows those younger than 55 to have a choice.
And, those choices are:
Bids are offered from various insurances that will offer the same thing Medicare offers. A person chooses which plan they wish.
If you choose the 2nd-least expensive, the government pays for it entirely.
If you choose the least expensive, the government pays for it and sends you a check for the difference!
If you choose one of the more expensive plans, the government pays its share and you pay the difference.
Or, you can stay in the current system regardless of your age.
So, what does this do?
It saves Medicare
It gives choices
It reduces the deficit
You know, an AMERICAN kind of idea with CHOICES and not MANDATES.
Obama's plan: Guts Medicare to pay for Obamatax.
You get no choice.
You get less care.
You get poorer quality care.
The type of care you receive is based on cost-controlling measures and is determined by the Independent Payment Advisory Board comprised of 15 non-elected individuals. (the dreaded death panel DOES exist).
Obama has already cut over $716 billion from Medicare with more cuts on the way. We do not even know the full cost of Obamatax. All we know for sure is that the CBO comes out every week with new numbers showing the astronomical cost which is rising daily.
If Medicare has already been cut by $716 billion, then it is fully solvent and requires no saving whatsoever.
The privatization mantra of the 80's and 2000's has died. Not all privatization is bad; but itis not the panacea that your leaders make out.
Stop the abject lying.
THe remainder of the "funny" math is a deliberate misrepresentation of Future Medicare outlay versus that expected without ACA. This is where the GOP lie resides.....in crative math and word games.
