(CBS News) MIAMI -- Reacting to Monday's shootings in Texas -- the third such incident to occur in recent weeks -- Mitt Romney said that "thoughtful consideration" needs to be given to how to deter such crimes without toughening gun laws.

"I happen to believe that this is not a matter of the weapon that is used, it's a matter of the individuals and the choices these people make, and we have to understand how to prevent those kinds of choices from being made," Romney told reporters at Miami International Airport. "I don't think gun laws are the answer, but I do believe that this is a topic that needs to be considered."

In College Station, Texas, police said a gunman killed a Brazos County constable and a civilian and wounded two police officers and a civilian near Texas A&M University. Police wounded the gunman, who died in custody. The incident came on the heels of mass shootings in Aurora, Colo., and Oak Creek, Wis.

(Romney talks Medicare in Florida earlier on Monday.)

"Clearly there's going to have to be consideration given to how it is these tragedies could be prevented," Romney said. "I don't have the answer for you today, but it's something I'm gonna give thought to and I'm sure a lot of other people in the country will do the same."

Meanwhile, Romney responded to Democratic charges that his new running mate Paul Ryan's budget plan is too radical, saying: "What's radical and extreme is to spent a trillion dollars every year than you take in. It's radical and extreme to pass on trillions of dollars of debts to our children, knowing we're never going to pay back these obligations that we've taken on. And Rep. Ryan has worked very hard to find ways to see if we can't get on track towards a balanced budget."

He also declined to delineate specific areas in which he disagrees with Ryan's plan. "I'm sure there are places that my budget is different than his, but we're on the same page as I've said before -- we want to get America on track to a balanced budget," he said.

R-money, EVERY decision you make should have careful consideration, hon.

So, it's not the gun, when a 2 year old injures himself when he's playing with a loaded weapon?

How is it then, thousands of children are killed each year, when it's not the gun?

No more than it is the knife when a 2 year old cuts himself, or the pool when he drowns, or the stairs when he falls down them...etc. etc. etc.

So, when we have each week a multiple killingby some nut up until the election, then can we have a substative discussion about approriate background checks and limiting fire power?

Another well regulated militia strikes again.

This is one time that I happen to agree with Twitt. It wasn't the weapon that did the killing. It was the idiot on the other end. I don't hear people screaming when someone in a car causes and accident that has multiple deaths. Just because something happens it doesn't mean we need more regulation.

Cars are not made to kill and people killing people with cars aren't allowed to use them (drive) to defend their property. And you haveto be licensed to use them and take a freakin' test (some States require retesting if you are truly ignorant).

Your analogy breaks down easily.

Yet when Saudi terrorists killed 3,000 people using planes, our airlines instantly became the most secure in the world. Why didn't we chalk that up to "sometimes stuff happens" like we do with mass gun killings? Is it because there isn't a multi-billion-dollar plane lobbyist organization like the NRA?

Once again Mittens is very clear on what he thinks is NOT the answer, but on what he thinks is the answer - "I don't know, I'll have to get back to you on that." Translation - I don't see it as a problem. Then the lying piece of filth wants to IMPLY that EVERYONE doesn't believe the "debt is a problem" rather than they simply don't argee with his psycopathic, self-serving, generational warfare approach to solving the problem. Some of us think Mittens paying the same rate as everyone that works for a living is a much better start than STEALING THE MEDICARE CONTRIBUTIONS OF EVERYONE UNDER 55.

Then again, some of us aren't Fox News addicted, theiving garbage waiting around on Murdoch, Rush, and the Koch Bros to tell us what to think.

Right, Mitt. Let the madness continue without any thought to any kind of gun regulations. (We have 2 guns in the house.)
Also, you think the debt situation is bad but did you ever say anything about the 2 unfunded wars that the GOP wanted? I would believe more of what you say if you had fought against expenditures asked for by Presidents from your party. Oh, but now, you are concerned. I see through you.
