Reid steps up criticism of Romney tax returns

J. Scott Applewhite

(CBS News) Refusing to retreat from his allegations that Mitt Romney hasn't paid taxes in 10 years, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., on Thursday night argued his claim comes from "an extremely credible source," and said he believes the presumptive GOP presidential nominee's personal wealth might be playing a role in helping him evade the law.

"People who make as much money as Mitt Romney have many tricks at their disposal to avoid paying taxes," Reid said in a statement. "Last weekend, Governor Romney promised that he would check his tax returns and let the American people know whether he ever paid a rate lower than 13.9 percent. One day later, his campaign raced to say he had no intention of putting out any further information."

(Watch: Reid's remarks Thursday.)

Romney has released one year of tax returns and an estimate for another, but has come under fire from President Obama's campaign and other Democrats for not returning more, particularly considering the heft of his wealth and hazy investment in offshore accounts. Reid argued "when you're running for president, you should be an open book," and said it's Romney's "obligation to put up, and release, several years' worth of tax returns just like nominees of both parties have done for decades."

Following Reid's initial charge on the Senate floor Thursday, Romney dismissed the majority leader's comments as "baloney" on conservative host Sean Hannity's radio show, advising Reid to "put up or shut up" about the identity of his anonymous source.

(Watch: Romney says he pays "a lot of taxes" every year.)

Some political watchdogs are backing Romney's call for Reid to fess up, citing his accusation as irresponsible hearsay. Others are critical of Reid for not having released his own tax returns; Reid defends himself by arguing the bar for disclosure is higher when you're running for president.

But Reid claimed only one way for Romney to dodge further scrutiny on the issue, "and that's release his tax returns," he said. "It's clear Romney is hiding something, and the American people deserve to know what it is."

**CORRECTION: A previous version of this story stated that Romney released two years of tax returns as required by law. He has released one (and one estimate), which is not required of presidential candidates.

Romney knows the Democratic operatives will connect dots on the financial industrial pillage of our way of life and manufacturing sector, that Romney and his 1% culture committed in the last 15 or so.

And these Neo-conservatives rely on the belief that the American people are too stupid to suspect anything - and would elect him anyway.

Yet Reid makes the excuse the "bar is higher" for the Presidential nominee? Nice.. so the guys Writing the Laws are less important? Esecially the guy head of that group?

Nice try...

BTW, Owldog.. Romney submitted 10 years of tax returns to Senate in 2007, the debate is just trying to make you look one way, instead of the facts that the tax returns are the ONLY issue the Democrats have.

They can't fight his capability to do the job, or his stance to the issues. Because his record is far more impressive.

Heck, they won't even go after his life before Bain, or his income from time as Governor, since he waived his Governor salary.

Nope, let's try to get your attntion on the fact that he hasn't disclosed something NOT required to disclose...

And not a single Democrat is willing to step up and set the example, except for those that did nothing.

Where is Pelosi's tax return, showing the income from the Insurance underwriters lobbying to protect the Corporate Interests.

I propose a very simple statement on this issue, that I believe might be applied by several people.

If Romney has any expectation of me voting for him, I will have to see their twelve most recent complete federal tax returns.....

If it was adequate for his father, it is adequate for me.

How about this... You should me where they are required to show more than 1 years worth? You show me where Clinton or Kennedy showed more than 1 years worth?

The fact that someone else did, has never been an excuse for disclosure, look at the work it took to get any sign of what looks to be a birth certificate, but has never been proven, since they refuse direct examination by an expert... and we are still waiting for the transcripts.

How about we stay on target, his tax return is as much an issue as the lack of disclosure by Obama... difference being, Romney has more to debate than the tax return... Obama? Guess not.

Give 'em hell Harry.
I am a Vietnam era vet and am starting a small business - the federal government has told me to register for as a vet-owned small business I have to provide them with 3 years of tax info. Hey Romney - you want to be president - quit whining and man-up for once. It looks like you are hiding something

Providing tax returns for financial backing on a VA loan is not the same.

He is not required to provide his life story... Just like Obama isn't required to provide his college transcripts... oh wait, yes he is! Dang...

When I see the liberal shephards turning over tax returns for public scrutiny, I will agree, but until then... man up and move on.

Obama was forced to show his original birth cert even tho it was not legal doc as the electronic one and he gave it up so why if Romney has nothing to hide would he not give it up.

He prob did not pay all his share of taexes or he would show them. He prob got more skeletons in that walk-in closet...i can't wait until that lock is picked.

I think all of these politicians should be required to show all of their tax returns for at least the terms they've served in congress. Also anyone attempting to be vetted for cabinet posts should also have their tax returns looked over. Like the Honorable Mr. Reid so eliquently stated that the American people should know where these folks values are coming from. So, Mr. Reid could explain to all of us how Secretary Geithner received his post without correctly paying all his taxes? I'm sure it was an oversight by the committee that vetted him, or was it his fault for not disclosing? Thank God Tom Daschle decided not to pursue a cabinet post after his tax 'faux pah'. Looked like another career politician couldn't figure out the tax code. Didn't something like that happen to Charlie Rangle from New York? So, maybe you all should make a tax code that a Senator or House member could understand? Correct me if I'm wrong, but these are all democrats, right? Also, I'd love to see the how much money each congressman and woman have made through the very unscrupulous acts of voting on provisioning acts and then buying the stock before it's reveiled so they could make money. I've heard the Honorable Ms. Pelosi has made more than an ETHICAL amount using this process. In looking at your records Mr. Reid, you are now worth a cool $5M. Since you've been in office since 86 could, some of that been from very wise 'UNETHICAL' investments, or could it have been from the Indian lobbying scandal contributions, or maybe from the Nevada Gaming Union folks out in Vegas. We all have seen how scrupulous they all are. Surely it can't be from your hard work passing budgets and laws over the last 4 years...oh yeah, none have been passed by the senate under your 'professional' leadership. Oh wait, I get it . It's not about any of these things. If romney wins and the Republicans take over the Senate, you'd be just like Pelosi, a back seat orator whose control is for an intents and purposes gone. This is Reid having a power play to seem relevant and to try ad get his president elected so he can still do what he's been doing, collecting money while stalling any legislation that would get this country moving again. Oh, how I'd love to be King for a day....

Somehow these 1% bozos like Robmee convinced enough people that 1) they are the job creators, 2) they care about America and 3) they pay their fair share. None of that could be further from the truth.

Romney isn't part of the top 1%. In fact, fromer President Clinton earned more last year, than Romney... but then again, he sold our jobs to China.

Just release the returns bozo Robmee. The American people need to see how much you make not even working for a living. We want to see if you paid even half as much as someone like me (28%). We want to know that you will represent the middle class, the majority of Americans.

He already submitted a current tax return. Try to stay focused long anough. He also submitted 10 years worth in 2008, when he was a possible VP candidate for McCain...

It's called smoke and mirrors... the liberals are thinking you are too lazy to check the facts, just like Reid thought nobody would call his bluff... too bad he may face criminal liability... guess that is one way to get his to lose his Majority Seat.

Perhaps Mr. Romney can enlist a half dozen of his best Republican supporters to hold Harry Reid down while Mr. Romney cuts off all of Harry Reid's hair.

Nah. On second thought, better for Mr. Romney not to repeat such a tactic. The Press might actually pay attention this time to the carefully-hidden bully that lurks within Mr. Romney.
