Boehner explains his "no love" for Mitt Romney remarks
House Speaker John Boehner
/ CBS News"I'm going to be enthusiastic about voting for Governor Romney in November and I think the American people will be enthusiastic about voting for Governor Romney in November," Boehner told reporters on Capitol Hill.
Speaking recently at a fundraiser in Wheeling, W.Va., Boehner was asked by an attendee if he can make her "love" Romney. Boehner said "no."
"Listen, we're just politicians. I wasn't elected to play God. The American people probably aren't going to fall in love with Mitt Romney" and added, "95 percent of the people that show up to vote in November are going to show up in that voting booth, and they are going to vote for or against Barack Obama."
Boehner clarified Tuesday, "The point I was trying to make was very simply this, the election this November is going to be a referendum on the president's failed economic policies."
As polls continue to show Romney struggling to connect with voters, his supporters have tried to shift the focus, repeatedly saying this election is a referendum on the president. And a new poll out Tuesday by The Washington Post/ABC shows that only 35 percent of Romney supporters say their vote is for Romney; 59 percent say their vote is against President Obama.
