(CBS News) Only about one in three Americans can correctly identify President Obama as a Christian, according to a new Gallup poll.

Thirty-four percent identified Mr. Obama as Christian, Protestant or a related denomination - Baptist, Methodist or United Church of Christ. Eleven percent said wrongly that the president is Muslim, including 18 percent of Republicans, 12 percent of independents and 3 percent of Democrats.

Eight percent of Americans said Mr. Obama has no religion. Forty-four percent said they did not know.

Before becoming president, Mr. Obama attended the Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago - where controversial pastor Jeremiah Wright was senior pastor until 2008. He has attended different Christian churches while in office.

In an earlier Pew poll, 57 percent of Americans correctly identified presumptive Republican presidential nominee's religion as Mormon. Eighteen percent said they would not vote for a well-qualified Mormon to be president.

Not surprising considering the relentless dis-information campaign launched by the Corporate-backed (Koch and Murdoch) right-wing extremists. Proving Goebbels correct. Repeat the Big Lie often enough and people will believe it.

The same forces are supporting Romney. Beware America. Your freedoms are at risk.

Eighteen percent said they would not vote for a qualified Mormon to be President? This needs further discussion among the pundits. That seems like a large percentage.

Armed with the knowledge that President Obama addressed his faith in AUDACITY OF HOPE, I take it that you don't read much.

Actions speak louder than words.

Obama has no one but himself to blame for the fact that most Americans think he is a Muslim.

The first sentence in this article speaks volumes.

"Only ABOUT one in three Americans can correctly identify Obama as a Christian.

What this tells you is 99.99% of Americans think he is a Muslim, and the 44% who "Don't know" are either delusional or have been living in caves for the last 3 1/2 years.

"...the tree is known by his fruit"(Matthew 12:33). Many of the people who attack President Obama as being a non-Christian, or more specifically a Muslim, don't exhibit Christian fruit themselves. His actions ( not just words) are more in line with true Christianity than theirs.[ Most true Muslims who have been asked, including clerics, don't believe that the president is a Muslim. It's only in the U.S. that that this belief has flourished because of politics and bigotry].I don't agree with the president on some things, but he has demonstrated his faith by displaying concern, and fighting for policies that help others.[Contrary to what many politicians say, scripture, throughout, teaches caring for those in need-the sick, the hungry, the naked, etc; and it can't all be done through churches and charities. They don't have that ability.Looking after the poor, those without a voice, and generally, those in need ,was a national charge to theocratic Israel; and Christ continued that same command that began in the Old Testament, and attached to it a dire warning to nations that forget about those in need- and hold the negative attitudes that many hold in this country today towards ANY in need , REGARDLESS of the circumstances]. President Obama has also been gracious towards those who have schemed against him through his entire presidency; and others who have " hated him without a cause", and/ or propagated lies against him.He has done what Jesus did.

It is quite possible that a large number of professed "Christians" are not Christian themselves. That's between themselves and God, but it is never correct for a professing Christian to impugn the profession of someone else.

They do, but their audience basically lusts after being deluded, they desperately want to believe a lie. So perhaps they don't need to work so hard.

Not surprised by this. I think if the WORLD was polled, you'd find that it's just Americans that don't know he's a Christian.

I'm thinking there's a good many things a lot of Americans don't know. Time to wake up!

Obama himself doesn't know he's a Christian. George Stephanopoulos helped him out after he referred to his "Muslim faith".
