Mary Cheney marries longtime partner

(CBS News) Mary Cheney and longtime partner Heather Poe were married Friday in Washington, D.C., CBS News has confirmed.

"Mary and Heather have been in a committed relationship for many years, and we are delighted that they were able to take advantage of the opportunity to have that relationship recognized," Mary's parents, former vice president Dick Cheney and his wife Lynne, said in a statement.

The newlyweds have two children - a 5 year old son Samuel and a 2 year old daughter Sarah- and live together in Virginia.

"Mary and Heather and their children are very important and much loved members of our family and we wish them every happiness," the Cheneys' statement reads.

Their second daughter has been openly gay throughout her father's political career, also encouraging the former vice president's 2009 public endorsement of same-sex marriage.

Cheney wrote about coming out to her parents in her biography, "Now It's My Turn." She said her father's reaction was, "you're my daughter and I love you and I just want you to be happy," the same sentiment expressed in his statement today.

I'm glad she has the civil liberty to do so. Of course, the fact that she does is not thanks to her daddy's party.

Poor ole Dick. Why couldn't he just have a "normal" daughter like everybody else.

Because he's nowhere near normal himself, maybe?

I guess, she should be glad that all those anti gay laws that her father and W tried to pass...Didn't. Otherwise she wouldn't have the right to get married or have a family (Legally)

Oh, really? What anti-gay laws were those? God invented marriage and defined it as a covenant between a man and a woman. Period. End of story. It doesn't mean conservatives hate homosexuals. It just means we will never consider them married.

Marriage was around long before people wrote a book and called it God's word. And they ceeded control of what's a marriage long ago. When you can have a civil service, with no religious presence, and a piece of paper calls it legit, the Church's relevance in marriage became marginal.

Can anyone imagine the outrage from the GOP if one of the Biden or Obama kids married his or her same-sex partner?

Cheney was a Chickenhawk when it counted during the Vietnam War. During the Bush years, he sat quietly while Bush supporters vilified gays. He sat quietly while radical rightwing Christianists used hatred against gays to push their extremist agenda on America? Family Values? Defense of Marriage?

I wish his daughter and her wife the best. I'm sad that her father has never displayed an ounce of integrity.
