Romney backs away from gay adoptions

Mitt Romney.

(CBS News) Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney on Friday backed away from his support of adoptions by same-sex couples, saying that he simply "acknowledges" the legality of such adoptions in many states.

A day earlier, Romney, in an interview with Fox News' Neil Cavuto, had indicated that while he does not support same-sex marriage, he considers the adoption of children by same-sex couples a "right."

He said on Thursday: "And if two people of the same gender want to live together, want to have a loving relationship, or even to adopt a child -- in my state individuals of the same sex were able to adopt children. In my view, that's something that people have a right to do. But to call that marriage is something that in my view is a departure from the real meaning of that word."

But then on Friday, he was asked, in an interview with CBS' WBTV in Charlotte, N.C., how his opposition to same-sex marriage "squared" with his support for gay adoptions. Romney told anchor Paul Cameron, "Well actually I think all states but one allow gay adoption, so that's a position which has been decided by most of the state legislators, including the one in my state some time ago. So I simply acknowledge the fact that gay adoption is legal in all states but one."

Romney did remain consistent on one point: He said he does not intend to use President Obama's flip flop of same-sex marriage against him in the campaign. Obama, who opposed same-sex marriage when he ran for president in 2008, said this week he now supports it. Romney said, "I think the issue of marriage and gay marriage is a very tender and sensitive topic. People come out in different places on this. The president has changed course in regards to this topic. I think that's his right to do that. I have a different view than he does. I believe marriage is a relationship between a man and a woman, but I just don't think that this becomes a hot political issue dividing our nation."

On another topic, Romney said that he thinks the Occupy Wall Street protesters who targeted the Bank of America in Charlotte this week are all too young to understand what banks do or how banking works.

Asked what message he had for the protestors, Romney said, "Unfortunately, a lot of young folks haven't had the opportunity to really understand how the economy works and what it takes to put people to work in real jobs and why we have banks and what banks do. I understand it's a very understandable sentiment if you don't find a job and you can't see rising incomes, you're going to be angry and looking at someone to blame. But the people to blame and the person to blame is the president and the old school liberals that have not gotten this economy turned around.

" ... This is a time for new direction for America and for someone who understands how to get the economy going again and I do and to get good jobs again and to make sure that kids coming out of school whether high school or college can find a good job. I know how important that is. I know how angry people are that they can't find those jobs."

I have come to the conclusion that the majority of those who support Obama on these websites are stupid, ignorant, limit their decision-making to what they read in the Washington Post, and have clearly never heard of the saying: It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt. You're just a pack of ignorant fools who are biased, hateful, bigots and who repeat the same old rhetoric over and over. Do you know how BORING you all are? How is it that we in other countries can see where you're heading with the leadership you now have, and yet you clowns are so blinded by your obvious hate of the one who can get you out of your mess, you can't see it? Good luck! You deserve what you get. Because of you, America will continue to go down!

There is proof that Mitt Romney was pandering the Gay Rights Movement eight-teen years ago. He should mentioned this in his speeches.

Or at least show the film clip:

I don't see where Romney backed away from his opinion. He thinks a traditional family is best for kids, knows that families come in different froms, and mentions the legality of gay adoptions.
So gay adoptions are fine and they are legal in all but one state - both Romney and Obama have mentioned state decisions in these social issues - pretty much more of the same if you don't add in the spin. Luckily, most people don't buy this stuff ...

The gay adoptions are cruel for the children. We all know right from wrong, even the gays. While they are sick and confused, they only have to look around them, around the country and around the world to recognize that yes their gay life style is abnormal behavior so why would they impose it on an orphan. These children will grow up, just like the kids molested in the Churches grew up. The gays fool no one here, what goes around comes around and those adopted children will have their say as adults.

One good reference on the Christian Right is the book "American Fascists: The Christian Right and the War on America" by Chris Hedges.

The Publisher Weekly quote about the author and book, "A Harvard Divinity School graduate, his investigation of the Christian Right agenda is even more alarming given its lucidity. Citing the psychology and sociology of fascism and cults, including the work of German historian Fritz Stern, Hedges draws striking parallels between 20th-century totalitarian movements and the highly organized, well-funded "dominionist movement," an influential theocratic sect within the country's huge evangelical population. Rooted in a radical Calvinism, and wrapping its apocalyptic, vehemently militant, sexist and homophobic vision in patriotic and religious rhetoric, dominionism seeks absolute power in a Christian state.

Hedges's reportage profiles both former members and true believers, evoking the particular characteristics of this American variant of fascism. His argument against what he sees as a democratic society's suicidal tolerance for intolerant movements has its own paradoxes. But this urgent book forcefully illuminates what many across the political spectrum will recognize as a serious and growing threat to the very concept and practice of an open society."

Continued,

An endorsement of it: "Chris Hedges may be the most credible figure yet to detect real-life fascism in the Red America of megachurches, gay-marriage bans and Left Behind books. American Facists is at its most daring when it enunciates...the perversities that are obvious to those of us not beholden to political exigencies." -- "New York Observer"

Mitt Romney has been for gay rights other than the right to redefine marriage since he has entered politics. No change in position there.

"In a 1994 letter to the Log Cabin Club of Massachusetts that was obtained way back when by the Boston Globe that has been mostly forgotten, then-Senate candidate Romney said:

As a result of our discussions and other interactions with gay and lesbian voters across the state, I am more convinced than ever before that as we seek to establish full equality for America's gay and lesbian citizens, I will provide more effective leadership than my opponent."

He said he believed in States making their own laws and supports that. Obama supports more Federal Laws and taking away our freedom. If anyone is flip flopping its the people who write these stories with a liberal stance. If the Media reports it then it must be true how the Person who said it meant it? come on people get real. I agree with the Marriage issue with Romney. I agree we need more jobs in this country and better economy. So you are going vote for Obama why? Maybe you are too young to have suffered through job loss and having to pay out more and more every time you go to the Grocery Store and the gas station. Who says Romney is Flipping the Liberal Media. Are we going to let them decide for us or find out for ourselves. Everyone in this country is suffering in same way and it will be worse for us in 4 years if Obama gets back in. I know it and if you don't then you are certainly not having any issues with Money.

Who says he was Gay that was something the Media surmised. Not true fact. Who hasn't been bullied in school or maybe bullied in return. Obama has been bulling this country long enough taking away our Freedoms acting as though he is all powerful. I can't believe people are falling for it all over again. If Romney and a few people cut someones hair in high school is that really a reason not to vote for him. I call that reaching really reaching. Because they can't find any real dirt on him. Oh how the Media would like to because that'a what they base their stories on and they have always been pro Democrat.

devken12; by your comments are you advocating for the general repeal of laws banning assaults in this country? ASSAULT is ASSAULT regardless of the sexual orientation or BELIEVED sexual orientation of the perpetrator or the victim.
