Has Newt Gingrich damaged his brand?

News Analysis

Despite a fresh set of primary losses, a massive campaign debt and the widespread consensus that he has zero chance of winning, Newt Gingrich is still in the race for the Republican presidential nomination.

For now.

Gingrich vowed Tuesday night to attend his scheduled events in North Carolina this week, though he acknowledged that he plans to "look realistically where we're at" and "think carefully about how we can be most helpful to this country." Still, he said he will stay in to push ideas like support for gun rights and opposition to same-sex marriage, telling a small audience he wants to send a message to the GOP that "we want a conservative platform."

Gingrich's decision to stay in the race is, to put it politely, hard to fathom. A week of events in North Carolina - with the media paying little attention - isn't going to have much of an impact on the GOP platform. And Gingrich's continued refusal to acknowledge the reality of his situation runs the risk of further damaging a Gingrich brand that may well have already suffered as a result of his presidential run.

Consider the evidence: Gingrich's think tank - the Center for Health Transformation, which reportedly brought in more than $37 million over eight years from health care, pharmaceutical and related companies - went bankrupt in April. The advocacy and fundraising group he built after leaving Congress, American Solutions for Winning the Future, disappeared last year.

Gingrich's well-compensated gig as a Fox News contributor, which was suspended when he decided to run, is gone - and considering Gingrich's recent claims that the network is biased against him and engaged in "distortion," it isn't coming back.

His campaign finds itself with more than $4 million in debt - and it has far too little cash on hand to cover it, and little in the way of donations coming in. The campaign has become so desperate that it's renting out its donor and email list to private companies like LifeLock. Traditionally, the eventually nominee has helped vanquished rivals raise money to cover their debts, but considering the nasty rhetoric Gingrich has flung at Mitt Romney, the former House speaker certainly can't count on the help.

A self-proclaimed fiscal conservative, Gingrich is taking heat over for not relinquishing his Secret Service protection, which is paid for by taxpayers. (In 2008, the Secret Service estimated the cost per day of protecting a candidate at $38,000.) He has had to stop using his signature song when entering rooms to give speeches, "Eye of the Tiger," because the band Survivor sued him for doing so. And to add insult to injury: Not two weeks ago, Gingrich was bit by a penguin

Gingrich should be able to build back up some of his ventures, and his increased visibility has its benefits -- potentially including increased book sales. But while Rick Santorum emerged triumphant from his failed presidential run, Gingrich appears at least somewhat diminished, having traded in his elder statesman status for the sometimes-ignoble reality of a failed campaign. It remains to be seen what will happen to his speaking fees, standing in the party and consulting prowess in the coming months. But one thing seems clear: Dragging his candidacy out until its last dying breath probably isn't going to help.

Damaged his brand??? Are you kidding?? His Brand was to be HONEST to the American People! To try to run a positive campaign! Those who say he has no MORALS are living in a dream world of Romney and his LIES and his money! We as a people have LOST every opportunity to have a truly EXPERIENCED person in the White House! Someone who would have made the CHANGES that OBAMA also LIED about! So, now you have your Obama Light which is Romney..who has as much experience as Obama..so I will NOW vote for OBAMA...because no matter what happens Romney could not beat him anyway! I will NEVER allow the big money in this Country to elect MY president!! And Romney will NEVER be the POTUS!! So, if you want to talk DAMAGED BRANDS you need to talk about the GOP...they are the ones that are DAMAGED! NOT Speaker Gingrich! Millions of people NOW and Always WILL respect and be greatful for what HE has done for this Country! Name one thing Romney has EVER done for this Country...besides BLEED IT DRY!! and send the money to offshore accts. Damaged Brand??? This article and its title and its author is PATHETIC!!! But that is exactly why we have Obama..nieve, completely stupid people who believe everything can be bought!! Character cannot be bought! And this article has NO character! Speaker Gingrich is not without faults...but you know what if he can ask forgiveness from GOD YOU or no other person can judge him!! Look in the mirror and YOU will see the damaged brand!

"Has Newt Gingrich damaged his brand?"

You mean even MORE than it was to begin with? Did anyone really believe this man was even remotely electable? He's already been reprimanded by Congress for misconduct and shown himself to be an adulterous hypocrite. What "brand" was he selling? Mitt's not my favorite, but he's better than Gingrich by a longshot!

Speaker Gingrich took the blame for the GOP..and later was completely exonerated for the entire thing!! But I bet you did not READ that far.....pathetic??

Answer is yes, and it was 20 years ago when he was a gross discrace and total hypocrite. He has done nothing since except sell snake poil to gullible conservatives and made himself rich in the porcess. But what else would you expect? He is a repug and cares for money first, last and only. Took 3 trys but bought a trophy wife he is satisfied with and keeps up with the rent on her at Tiffany's.

Despite...all of the mostly personal negatives and negative comments...Gingrich articulated the real problem and proposed real solutions...As speaker he was third in line to be Pres, balanced budgets under his leadership and was key in the "contract" with America...and...the main reason I support (ed) his candidacy ..he has a great grasp and understanding of our history and how to apply it to today. Romney beat him in Iowa with carpet bombing personal attacks. Newt never recovered from that. Unfortunately, Newt has too many "targets" with which opponents can use. For that reason he needs to throw his lot in with Romney...as difficult as that would be. Since defeating Obama is more critical ...time to solidify the GOP...

"In 2008, the Secret Service estimated the cost per day of protecting a candidate at $38,000."

Figure 40-50% more today than that figure or 53 to 57,000. Round it off to 55,000 per day.

So for 1 month of 28 days, that's 1,540,000 or 1.5 million per month for his security. Are you kidding me? Even if costs today were the same as 2008, that's still over 1 million per month for what? So he can showboat? He never even had a chance. He's just milking everyone for everything he can. He's a bum.

Talk about a selfish, egotistical b@stard. Get out of the race you fraud and save the taxpayers some money.

Newt is not damaging his brand. What hurt him was the Mitt's Millions and Minions carpet-bombing him with misleading attack ads.

What hurt is the Republican Establishment, which usually gives us candidates that are only marginally different than their Democratic Opponents.

I think Newt should say in the race until Mitt has 1144 delegates, or until Tampa. I also think the main stream media, should give him better coverage, instead of acting like Romney has already won. It is unfair to announce the winner until ALL the votes are in. That means that voters in late states, such as Texas and California, count less than early voting states. All of our votes should count equally,

Newt had a damaged brand before he ever began campaigning. Anyone who remembers him from the 90s knows full well his marbles are not all arranged in normal orders, and he proved us right when he jetted off to Greece, when he started the moon colony stuff. I, for one, never took him seriously. He's just about money and ego, it's always that with him.

Is he getting free air travel with his secret service status? Staying in gets him some kind of matching funds at some point, same reason the others only "suspend" campaigns. Somewhere there's a motive for him to stay in. Otherwise, he's just making a complete fool of himself.

What hurt Newt is Newt. All of Romeny's money and king's men would have been useless if Newt had any morals and was a good person, but he is not - he is a lying cheating scumbag of the first order.

Newt opened the door for Romney, and Mitt took full advantage of the dump truck size load of Newt failures. The outcome was easy to predict.
