Dems: Ryan budget plan would drive seniors "to the poorhouse"

Two days after Rep. Paul Ryan released his 2013 budget proposal, Democrats are launching a coordinated effort to criticize the plan, decrying it as a Republican attempt to line the pockets of wealthy Americans while driving seniors "to the poorhouse."

Ryan, a Wisconsin Republican and chair of the House budget committee, unveiled the plan Tuesday to accolades from many congressional Republicans, as well as presidential candidates Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich.

Speaker John Boehner told reporters Thursday he is confident he will have enough votes for the measure to win approval when it comes up for a vote in the House of Representatives next week.

The measure is unlikely to pass the Senate, controlled by Democrats, and has little chance of becoming law. It does, however, set up an ideological battle between the left and the right over budget priorities as the 2012 election nears.

Debbie Wasserman Schultz, the Florida Democrat who heads the party's national committee, hammered Ryan for insisting on "deep and dire cuts" to Medicare and Social Security at the expense of senior citizens, who she argued would be "gravely impacted" by the proposal.

She argued that the plan, which starting in 2023 would give seniors voucher-like subsidies to purchase either private insurance or a traditional government-run Medicare-like program, would "pull the rug out from under the most vulnerable" Americans.

"We reject the idea that the way to deal with rising health care costs is to give seniors a voucher," Wasserman Schultz said in a press call with reporters.

Democrats are also hammering the Ryan plan for including a series of tax breaks they say favor the wealthy -- among which include bringing down the corporate tax rate, eliminating most taxes on overseas profits, and ending the alternative minimum tax. The plan would also overhaul the tax code to create just two tax brackets, 10 percent and 25 percent.

Rep. Ted Deutch, also a Florida Democrat, argued that the plan places the burden of cuts to Medicare solely on the middle-class and the elderly - and that not "a single word" in the proposal makes similar demands of the wealthy.

"People who rely on Medicare will face a terrible choice," Deutch told reporters. "Pay more or get less." The Republican plan, he argued, would "send seniors back to the poorhouse."

He contended that while Medicare and Social Security "may have slight structural deficiencies," the Affordable Care Act - Mr. Obama's landmark health care overhaul - had distinctly improved Medicare's financial situation.

"Medicare's finances are the strongest they've been in years thanks to the Affordable Care Act and Social Security is fully solvent for the next quarter of a century," he said.

Deutch and Wasserman Schultz were also quick to tie the plan to Mitt Romney, dubbing it the "Ryan-Romney" budget plan.

"We may as well call the Republican budget the Ryan-Romney budget plan for all the things they have in common," Deutch said, adding that he thought it was "one of the worst proposals for Floridians and the middle-class that we've ever seen."

Ryan has said his proposal would save and strengthen Medicare and balance the budget by 2040.

Romney told CBS News earlier this week that he applauds Ryan and his House colleagues "for taking a bold step toward putting our nation back on the track to fiscal sanity and robust economic growth." The plan, he said, will "strengthen Medicare for generations to come" and shares Romney's goals of cutting taxes, reforming the tax code, reducing spending and tackling the debt.

Deutch pointed out that Romney, who recently turned 65, had not applied to Medicare. But, he said, just because Romney doesn't need it doesn't mean he should be able to "take it away" from retirees.

"They believe that seniors should just be left to figure it out for themselves," Wasserman Schultz said. "We believe there's a better way."

I do not know how Debbie can support Obama the way he has disrespected Israel and Jewish leaders over the last 3 years. You would think, Debbie being Jewish would have some respect for the folks in Israel who are our best friends in the middle east.

Are you kidding? Israel is only our "friend" as long as we feed them money and fight their wars for them.

Vouchers for health insurance are nothing but a MASSIVE giveaway of American tax payer money to the gigantic health insurance companies, and will do NOTHING to improve the quality or delivery of health care.

The Ryan/Romney plan is to make insurance companies richer. Give the seniors a voucher for less then half the cost of the private insurance. Typical republican plan, they have to take care of the insurance company's CEO's salary and bonus's.

Obama cuts Medicare by 500 billion plus, ...

....

Obama chooses to spend $500 BILLION in Medicare funds more effectively and Republicans continue to argue to DOUBLE pay insurance companies to provide services that are MORE expensive to the taxpayer than when the same services are handled by Medicare.

Medicare fraud cost US taxpayers over 60 billion last year. Government has proven it's incapable of running any program without wasting billions. Social Security has been raided, all that is left are IOUs. Welfare fraud is in the billions, etc., etc. Now we find out that Fluke's testimony before Congress was a total fraud. She was unaware that a Rite Aid Pharmacy, three miles from the Georgetown Campus has Birth control pills for $9 a month or $108 a year. The War on Women just became another political game. End the lies, and stop wasting our money on failed programs.

That's because Republicans continue to protect and EVEN elect convicted fraudsters to public office -- Take the Governor of Florida for example.

All birth control medications are not identical; especially when used to treat diseases and not for contraception alone as Ms Fluke's real testimony indicated.

Wherein the Ryan budget includes a "voucher" system, the Democratic repsonse is legitinate. Voucher and privatization systems often fail because they weaken thepublic system and must make profit (notjustpay operating costs and debt).

Obama cuts Medicare by 500 billion plus, and Debbie is worried about seniors. She must be joking, or is totally out of touch. Why doesn't she explain the panel in the new health care bill that will be made up of Obama appointees who will decide on which procedures to fund in the future and which to stop funding. If seniors are smart they will see they are being thrown under the bus and then run over. Wake up seniors.

That has been a well orchestrated lie since the plan was rolled out. What IS cut is Meicare Advantage to be rolled back into Medicare proper.

While I agree that the Obamacar, Privatized healthcare plan, that is largely based on the Republican ideals of letting private industry control the system, is not ideal....there is no need to outright lie to poke legitimate holes in it.

Near------If you check "Fact Check" the 500 billion cut comes from so called savings over 10 years. Now have you ever heard of a government agency saving this kind money, the money will come out of Medicare and hurt senior over the years.

OK, Debbie Wasserman Schultz, where is YOUR plan to save Medicare? .......... I'm waiting............

The dirty little secret is that Democrats CUT Medicate last year by $500 billion, and now they want to claim that Republicans are going to throw Seniors in the streets. The dirty little secret is that Democrats plan to get rid of Medicare, and place everyone on Obamacare - that is why they took the $500 billion out of Medicare and put it in Obamacare.

There are despicable lying politicians - and then there is Debbie Wasserman Schultz. She steals the show. She is counting on a lot of ignorant people to believe her garbage, and unfortunately there are a lot of them out there.

Just ignore Rob,Obama4. If he doesn't vent his spleen toward Obama several times a day onthese boards, his blood pressure risks shooting blood out his ears.

He couldn't be getting much else done,so excercise is no good for remedying his condition.

AND he views this board as his personal right to first Amendment speech, whereas it is really just entertainment, after all.

The capacity for Republicans to live in denial is astounding. Obama inherited the huge deficit coming from Bush's Great Recession, Bush's tax cuts to the wealthy, and two unfunded wars. It increased as Obama was obliged to get the economy moving again- and he has succeeded n that effort. Deficits are paid off by having a growing economy and growing tax base. Trickle-down economics are a proven failure but the GOP wants to relive their past financial disasters and bring this country to its knees. Then of course they will blame Obama. What else is new.
