Romney: Republicans "care about people"

Mitt Romney

/ AP

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - With Democrats taking the upper hand in election-year debates over contraception and college affordability, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney on Monday tried to take the edge off the party brand, telling a town hall crowd, "We care about people."

"What the president, the Democrats, always do is, they want to make Republicans look like they're heartless," Romney said on the eve of Super Tuesday contests in 10 states. "Actually, we care about people. We care about education. We care about the students more than the teachers' union, alright? So we put our kids first."

He described other ways the Republican Party had helped people in need, such as its push for welfare reform in the 1990s. He also cited the health care bill he enacted as governor of Massachusetts, although his rivals for the GOP nomination have frequently tried to use it against him, saying it served as the model for President Obama's health care plan. Romney boasted that the plan was put into effect without a tax hike or cuts in Medicare benefits.

Despite the strong similarities in the Massachusetts plan and the national version, Romney tried to draw distinctions, noting that Obama's plan was passed without Republican support. "How come you forced through your plan without a single Republican vote?" Romney asked rhetorically. "How come you didn't listen to the fact that the people of Massachusetts voted for (Sen.) Scott Brown to stop Obama-care? How come, Mr. President, you imposed this on the American people when we didn't want it?"

He portrayed himself as an underdog in a potential fall matchup with Obama. "He's raising millions of dollars every month, and has an organization, I'm told ... that he has 491 members of his staff, his campaign staff. This is a huge juggernaut effort," Romney said.

The Romney campaign has claimed to have fewer than 100 staffers. The Obama campaign does not disclose its number of workers.

Lately, Republicans have been on the defensive for opposing health insurance coverage of contraception in all cases, which Democrats and women's groups have portrayed as an attack on women. And GOP presidential candidate Rick Santorum was roundly criticized for calling Obama a "snob" for policies designed to boost college enrollment.

You have got to be kidding! I used to think Romney was the only reasonable person in the GOP. He now sounds as ridiculous as the rest. Republicans are the Party of Hate, Ignorance, Selfishness, Nastiness, Bullying, Meanness; and ironically, they are at odds with all true Christian beliefs on how to treat your fellow humans. They are proud of Rush Limbaugh and Anne Coulter; two of the most hate-filled people alive.

Republicans are not trying to take care of everyone in the tent and everyone else they can help. They are trying to push as many out of the tent as possible and keep even more out. They reject common sense and science, and spew venomous comments all over everyone and everything. Republicans are blight and a disgrace to America and civilization.

Moreover, Republicans are arrogant beyond belief. The US has approximately 310+ million people out of the worlds approx. 7 billion, by any math (even Republican) we are a little less than 5% of the World population--yet we consume over 30% of the world's resources. We also have the 1st or 2nd largest nuclear stockpile, and we have refused to sign the Kyoto protocols and are not a member of the International Criminal Court. Our previous administration tortured people and trampled the Constitution.

We have a sovereign right to protect ourselves and our allies, but we have no God given right to destroy the planet, nor any priority over the rest of humanity, and that includes all the people of Islam and everyone else.

...and Obama and the Democrats don't care about people? Is that the point you're trying to make Mitt? Or, are you just trying to say that Republicans are at least equal in that regard.

I remember when the stock market dropped like a rock in 2009, and a member of the press asked President Obama what he thought about it. He said he didn't watch the stock market, that it was like watching a political poll. It is nothing like a political poll. Millions of Americans lost their life savings and retirements. Millions of Americans were suffering, and President Obama was entirely stupid or he just didn't care. I don't consider President Obama to be a stupid man, so you tell me - did he care?

Gas is projected to hit record highs this summer, but his administration does not seem to care.

"Politico: By ALEX GUILLEN | 2/28/12 6:37 PM EST
The Energy Department isn't working to lower gasoline prices directly, Secretary Steven Chu said Tuesday after a Republican lawmaker scolded him for his now-infamous 2008 comment that gas prices in the U.S. should be as high as in Europe.
Instead, DOE is working to promote alternatives such as biofuels and electric vehicles, Chu told House appropriators during a hearing on DOE's budget."

If Americans want to know why we are going to be stuck with massive oil price increases this summer, we have to look no farther than President Obama's administration. High gas prices don't just slam people at the pump, every product that is transported by fossil fuel will have to include the increased transportation cost in the prices in the stores. This will hit the poor and middle income Americans very hard, and it will hurt those on fixed incomes (the elderly) the worst. Not only that, vacations will be cut - nailing the crap out of states that depend on tourism. High gas prices will cut the legs out from under the small amount of recovery that we have experienced.

In an interview Barrack Obama did with the San Francisco Chronicle editorial board very early in the presidential campaign, January 2008 - he said the following:

"Under my plan of a cap-and-trade system, electricity rates would necessarily skyrocket. Coal-powered plants, you know, natural gas, you name it, whatever the plants were, whatever the industry was, they would have to retrofit their operations. That will cost money. They will pass that money on to consumers."

Does this sound like someone who is concerned with Americans suffering under the weight of high energy costs? NO. President Obama is a radical extremist with a consuming ideology that outweighs any concern that he has for suffering Americans. He has a dreamed up personal "vision" that he wants for America, and he does not care who gets hurt - as long as he can bring his own personal vision to pass. Does this sound like a President who really cares about the American people? NO.

We need a practical leader, with proven practical solutions, to turn this nation around economically. I am SO ready for a new President.

Well Rob, the GOP is going to have to provide better choices for the office than they have so far. I would rather write in "Micky Mouse" (he'd be more qualified) than any of the clowns they have running now. It's a shame. Many men fought and died for the right to vote and after all that the current political powers have not given us anybody who would be a good choice. It's all about Party Power and no longer about the people.

You know if you campaign by trying to alienate major sectors of people, it isn't hard to get the idea that REpublicans don't really give a rats behind about many people.

Corporations are "people" as Mitt has said. Friends of Mitt are people. Immigrants are people. So are illegal immigrants for that matter. Poor are people; middle and rich class are people. People out of work are people. SCOTUS says even Unions are people. Women who want prenatal care and screening are people too. Zygotes? Well not quite yet.

Sure Republicans care some people.....not many, but some.

Forget the political party issue, because party platforms change. Here is the real deal. Progressive socialist want to empower the state, and conservatives want to empower the individual through personal responsibility and personal freedom. Liberals believe empowering the state over people, and conservatives believe in empowering the people over the state. Those are the facts.

I think you meant "angels". However, you are right - and so was Madison. People aren't angels, so we limit the rights of people who abuse those rights. We shouldn't limit the rights of people who don't abuse those rights by an abusive and oppressive federal government imposing itself on those it is supposed to protect. Have a great day.
