Romney calls Santorum Mich. robocall "outrageous and disgusting"

As Michigan voters head to the polls Tuesday, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney hit opponent Rick Santorum on two fronts - criticizing him as an "economic lightweight" and blasting him for courting support of Democrats in the state.

The Santorum campaign has been robocalling Democrats, who can participate in the state's open primary, criticizing Romney's opposition to the auto bailout and asking them to "send a loud message" to the former Massachusetts governor. Romney said the calls were "a terrible, dirty trick."

"It's outrageous and disgusting," Romney said on Fox News' morning program "Fox and Friends."

"At the last hour, by the way, late in the afternoon on the day before the election, maybe hoping no one would notice, they start sending out calls to telling [Democrats] to go into the Republican primary and vote against Mitt Romney," he said.

Santorum defended the move Monday night on Fox News' "Hannity," saying it's a "very positive robocall."

"When I run a call basically calling Democrats who are eligible to vote here to vote for us, that's a low blow? Encouraging people to come and vote for us and we talk about our manufacturing plant and what we're going to do to create jobs?" Santorum said.

But Romney, who has been campaigning aggressively in Michigan, considered his home turf because he was raised there, insisted that "this is a new low for his campaign."

Prior to the Santorum robocalls, local Democrats as well as national activists, encouraged fellow Michigan Democrats to vote for Santorum in order to draw out the Republican primary. Some Democrats also believe Santorum would be an easier candidate against President Obama in the general election.

(Watch Romney say he will not "light hair on fire" to get elected.)

Romney's critique of Santorum did not stop with his campaign tactics and continued to hit Santorum on his experience, too. During the interview on "Fox and Friends," Romney called Santorum an "economic lightweight," comparing him to President Obama.

"I think in some cases, Sen. Santorum has shown himself to be an economic lightweight," Romney said. "I don't think people want to nominate an economic lightweight to go up against the president who also is an economic lightweight and has made it hard for America to get working again."

Alluding to his credentials in the private sector as a key factor this presidential election, Romney said "the other guys are good guys, but they really haven't spent time in the economy."

LOL. Of course, Santorum voted against the bailout also, but doesn't matter. The only reason Democrats in Michigan will be voting for Santorum is them hoping like hell that he is the Republican candidate for President, so they can then vote against him and for Obama. Santorum is a lunatic and everyone with a brain knows that.

This script couldn't be better, if a Democrat was writing it! Here's what Romney said during his last presidential run, about his own cross-over voting: "Romney, then a registered independent, voted for former Sen. Paul Tsongas in the 1992 Democratic presidential primary. He told ABC's George Stephanopoulos that his vote was meant as a tactical maneuver aimed at finding the weakest opponent for incumbent President George H.W. Bush."

LOL - so it was ok that he did it. These two are SO entertaining!!!

Wasn't it just a couple of days ago when the GOP "leadership" was accusing Democrats of intending to do this very thing, and claiming doing so would be such a sleazy thing to do?

So it's a sleaze-ball tactic if Democrats decide to do it on their own, but perfectly acceptable if a Republican candidate tells them to do it?

Sounds exactly like the current Republican party. "Bad" when other people do something, but okay if they want to do it.

It's called hypocrisy.

Come on willard, what's really disgusting, is that someone like you that hates everyone other than the top 0.1% of Americans, and wants to give the wealthiest Americans even more tax cuts, actually thinks he has a chance of being elected to the presidency!
