Gingrich says Obama "surrendered" by apologizing to Afghans

Gingrich campaigning for Colo. comeback

SPOKANE, Wash. -- Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich said President Obama "surrendered" Thursday when he apologized to the Afghan government for the burning of several Qurans at an American military base near Kabul.

Referring to the burning of "radical Islamic material" that included the Qurans, the former House speaker said the situation had been "blown into a huge incident by various fanatics in Afghanistan." He told a crowd gathered at a campaign rally at the Bing Crosby Theater that while the president had apologized for the burning, he had not called on the Afghan government to issue an apology for the deaths of two NATO soldiers who were killed by a man wearing an Afghan army uniform during increasingly violent protests of the desecration of the Muslim holy book.

"There seems to be nothing that radical Islamists can do to get Barack Obama's attention in a negative way," Gingrich said, "and he is consistently apologizing to people who do not deserve the apology of the president of the United States, period."

Obama sent a letter to Afghan President Hamid Karzai in which he wrote, "I wish to express my deep regret for the reported incident. I extend to you and the Afghan people my sincere apologies," according to the New York Times, quoting Karzai's press office. Obama did not release the text of what it called a three-page letter on a "host of issues" between the two countries, "several sentences of which relate to this issue," the Times reported.

Although Presidential apologies are rare, they are not unheard of. President George W. Bush offered an apology to Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Maliki after a U.S. soldier fired several bullets into a Quran in 2008. And Bush also said he was "sorry for the humiliation suffered by the Iraqi prisoners and the humiliation suffered by their families" following the Abu Ghraib scandal.

But Gingrich, who consistently accuses Obama of minimizing the threat of radical Islamic terrorists, accused the president of "(refusing) to defend the integrity and the lives of the people who serve under him."

" If Hamid Karzai, the president of Afghanistan, doesn't feel like apologizing, then we should say, 'Goodbye and good luck, we don't need to be here risking our lives and wasting our money on somebody who doesn't care.'"

Gingrich also slammed the president on his energy policy, calling it "so funny that it ought to be on Saturday Night Live as a skit." The candidate has increasingly focused on the high price of gas, telling crowds that he will bring the cost down to between $2 and $2.50 a gallon by embracing all forms of American energy. His plan includes an expansion of drilling on federal lands and off U.S. coastlines, continued support of alternative energy sources, and employment of new technologies in shale exploration and hydro-fracking, the process of extracting oil from rock with pressurized water.

Feeling the pressure from Gingrich and the other GOP presidential candidates on the issue, Obama Thursday promoted an "all-of-the-above" strategy that would focus on more domestic oil production, the development of alternative energies and stricter fuel efficiency standards.

Obama pledged to Karzai that the ones responsible for the heinous Koran burning would be held accountable, with the full knowledge and understand that he, President Obama, as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the United States of America, ordered that all trash in war zones be burnt and that this trash of Korans were burnt under his specific orders. President Obama is a grandstanding lying buffoon. 'Troops at posts in war zones are required to burn their trash,' Wright said."

Rigghht. They called up Obama and asked him what to do with a particular load of material because presidents always have day-to-day control of garbage disposal on every military base.

Yeesh.

to my knowledge America has never had a president that was such a ***** as this one.
my opinion; is he is a traitor, as such he should be treated like one.
too bad the rest of the Americans don't act like they care about the country and write their elected representatives, telling them to impeach the bum or face not being re-elected.

To my knowledge, I've seldom encountered someone who espouses such idiocy as you. Obama is a traitor? You are a fool. Someone impeached your reason long ago.

Is anyone, republican or democrat, under the impression that the situation would be better if the president had said, "you people need to get a grip, it's just a stupid book"? Of course he apologized for the incident. Who wouldn't?! Republicans really ought to choose their criticisms and battles a little better. Not everything Obama does is wrong.

No one in their right mind would apologize for routine trash disposal.'Troops at posts in war zones are required to burn their trash,' Wright said."

Well why did military brass, the State Department and the Pentagon also apologize for the incident? Because Obama is such an all-powerful dictator and they had to? Or maybe they feel it would be better to have some allies over there.

Why is the "incident" even *known*? It's totally inappropriate ("Loose Lips Sink Ships") for anyone outside the immediate sphere of the operation to know what was, and what was not destroyed, or to even know that the military disposes of material by incineration. That's *precisely* the kind of mundane detail that needs to be kept totally secret by military personnel. Why do I know about it? Who leaked it, and how are they being punished?

To oftucson: Do you have a background in classification of military documents? I doubt it strongly. Why do you think it's totally inappropriate for the media to report on a newsworthy event? It's newsworthy because some of our troops were killed as a result of a stupid act by some other troops. Comparing this disclosure to "Loose lips sink ships" is foolish. The loose lips comment was apt in WW2, and it had real meaning. Sailng schedules of convoys carrying material to Great Britain were classified for good reason: Uboats were waiting in the Atlantic to torpedo them.
We had some troops who did something stupid and extremely offensive to the citizens of the country where they destroyed religious documents. It's appropriate for US Government officials to apologize. We're not perfect, and when we screw up, we should be mature enough to accept responsibility and apologize. BTW,that same principle applies to business: When Johnson & Johnson screwed up in the manufacture of Tylenol a few years ago, it accepted responsibility, apologized and paid damages to persons who took the incorrectly formulated medicine. Such actions are considered damage control.

Religion is a scary thing....almost as scary as politicians who manipulate religion to advance their personal agendas.Religion is a handy tool for the unscrupulous self righteous persons of power the world over to subjugate the masses and divert attention away from their own nefarious activities.
It was always this way and it always will be until hopefully a prophet arrives to enlighten ignorant people that any preferential sort of religious belief is a bunch of baloney as religion was supposed to bring humans together and not to divide them.Of course no-one will ever believe him/her because they all want to believe their own form of religious belief is better than the other guys.Politicians are very adept at perpetuating this fantasy.

So, only Democrats are unemployed, with time on their hands. What is the status of the bloggers who write insulting comments about the president or Democrats? I have not seen any numbers that compare rates of unemployment by political affiliation. Do you have access to some unpublished data on this subject, or is the late Senator Joseph McCarthy your hero or role model, and so you just like to throw out unsupported pejorative labels on persons who don't agree with you.

Instead, the vast team-building exercise that has driven the broadcasts of people like Rush and Hannity and the talking heads on Fox for decades now has really been a kind of ongoing Quest for Orthodoxy, in which the team members congregate in front of the TV and the radio and share in the warm feeling of pointing the finger at people who aren't as American as they are, who lack their family values, who don't share their All-American work ethic."
