Lawmakers receive threatening letters -- officials

UPDATED 7:03 p.m ET

A handful of lawmakers, including House Speaker John Boehner, have received threatening letters in the last few days with an unidentified white powdery substance and more may be on the way, law enforcement officials told CBS News Wednesday.

In addition Boehner, at least one lawmaker from Wisconsin and a senator from Indiana have received the letters at their district offices, with more expected to receive additional letters, the officials said.

"Those letters (already received) were tested and the substance found to be harmless," said Terrance Gainer, Senate Sergeant at Arms.

In a letter to the Senate community, Gainer, the chamber's chief law enforcement official, said the author of the letters suggested some of these letters yet to arrive at Senate offices "may contain an actual harmful material."

"Although all letters received thus far have proved harmless, it is essential that we treat every piece of suspicious mail as if it may, in fact, be harmful," Gainer wrote in his memo to the Senate community.

The letters make vague complaints about too much money in politics and had a Portland, Oregon return address from an organization listed as "The MIB, LLC," a law enforcement official told CBS News.

In addition to the letters to the lawmakers, officials said television comedians Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert received letters mentioning the letters to senators.

The author told the comedians he would send letters to all 100 senators and ten percent of them would contain "lethal pathogens," an official told CBS News.

The author wanted an end to corporate money and lobbying, an end to "corporate personhood," and called for a new constitutional convention to rewrite the constitution.

The author also told the comedians he would tell the senators they are "working for the wrong side" and there is a ten percent chance they have been exposed to a lethal pathogen. The author also said he "randomized" which letters would contain the pathogen and even he did not know who would get which letter.

The letters come more than a decade after five people, including two Washington postal workers, were killed when anthrax was mailed to the Washington offices of a pair of Democratic senators and a number of media personalities. The mail system to the U.S. Capitol was completely overhauled in the wake of those attacks and letters are now sent through and off-site processing facility before arriving at lawmakers' offices.

Although I deplore what the Teapubicans have morphed into over the last 40 years or so (I am a registered Independent, btw), I am appalled at what this person has done, which shows a mental instability and as such, the person needs to be located and treated; if he can't be rehabilitated, he would be safer in a home for the mentally ill.

Unfortunately for ALL of us, there are too many in elective office that have chosen it for a lifelong profession, rather than serving their constituents, they serve themselves and the top 1% of the country.

Ron Paul, Mitch McConnell, John Boehner are just a few who have been in elective office for decades, enriching themselves, while having the rest of us pay for their very lives (we pay for the Cadillac health care they receive for their entire families, we pay for their travel, their franking, their housing, their retirement benefit, their salaries, etc), while blaming the poor, the elderly, the disabled, veterans, the unemployed, the teachers, firefighters, nurses, emt's & police for the economic issues we face as a nation.

The removal of any financial oversight and allowing banks to be both investment companies & banks caused the financial collapse of 2007 - 2008; Congress wrote the laws putting more money into their own pockets, while picking ours.

Ron Paul is no better, though he claims to be a Libertarian; he is the king of earmarks (the spot previously held by Rick Santorum).

We need to vote out those in elective office (at all levels) who enrich themselves at our expense and wish to take away the Social Security, Medicare we've paid into all our lives. That would be anyone with an "R" after their name.

Maybe they should stop voting against the constituents wishes, and maybe take the time to read and understand the bills they are voting on. When they do their job so poorly, they can expect some hate mail, they only give us the chance to fire you every couple of years.

Why would anyone target these honorable men? Men who have gotten us in 30 conflicts the last 30 years. MEn who destroy the Middle Easte with depleted uranium. Men who have done nothing about 9/11. They have not mentioned a word 9/11 was a Mossad job. It's time to get rid of these dudes. It's is high time to throw this constitution in the trash. The only time they go by the Constitution is when they debate things in congress. But they don't care about a Constitution. The ones who sent the anthrax out the last time was Bush and company. It's why the guy that wrote about Bush's daughter beign drunk was sent anthrax. Why woyld anyone care about that guy?

This is probably a stunt done by the republican party corporate puppets in order to get elected in november. If they will sacrifice the good of the country in order to try to win the election would they not create this fiasco in order to get sympathy? If john boehner isn't crying then you know it's staged by the gop.

That was mentioned elsewhere, yep. Could certainly be. If it is a false flag type of thing, it will be hilarious when one of their own goes to prison for this. At this point, considering republican behavior, I'd be *more* surprised to find out it's a Dem or liberal than I would be to find out it's a republican or libertarian.
