Obama turns on the charm in Google+ "hangout"

President Obama had the rare opportunity to connect with voters one-on-one on Monday, discussing matters like education, unemployment, and even his upcoming 20th wedding anniversary in a nearly hour-long internet "hangout" sponsored by the social networking site Google Plus.

The chat, whose YouTube page had 6,123 "likes" and 1,635 "dislikes" shortly after it ended, gave five people the chance to ask Mr. Obama questions about his vision for America. They also conveyed to him their own personal struggles and concerns, while thousands of people watched live. The event also featured video questions submitted previously by other YouTube users.

One of the featured women, Jennifer, a mother of two from Fort Worth, Texas, talked about her husband's struggle with unemployment as an engineer, and wondered why the president continued to support H-1B Visas, which allow employers to temporarily hire foreign workers in specialty occupations.

Mr. Obama, after asking Jennifer questions about her husband's area of specialization, emphasized the demand for high-tech engineers in America and said he was "interested in finding out" more about why her husband was having trouble finding a job.

He promised to "follow up" on the matter, and invited Jennifer to send him her husband's resume.

Speaking to a group of high school students in Freemont, California, Mr. Obama also talked about the need for students to continue their educational pursuits beyond high school - even if he argued young people now have "a little bit more responsibility now to think ahead" about their futures while doing so.

"College is a big enough investment where you've gotta think ahead," he told Adam, one of the students, when addressing various ways young people can seek higher education without being overwhelmed by the burden of student debt.

When confronted with an Obama impersonator, apparently famous on YouTube, Mr. Obama laughed and noted that his imitator lacked the requisite gray hairs needed to accurately represent him.

The event was meant to give Americans a chance to ask questions related to Mr. Obama's State of the Union address, which he delivered last Tuesday. The president did emphasize a number of points he had made in that speech and others - particularly in reference to his plans for improving the economy and creating job through innovation and developments in high-tech manufacturing.

But he didn't shy away from answering questions that veered a little more personal. (He did, however, refuse to do a "jig," as one participant requested, citing his wife's superior skills in that arena.)

When asked what he and First Lady Michelle Obama planned to do for their 20th anniversary, on October 3, the president laughed: "I don't know how romantic a weekend we're actually gonna get," he said, noting that it would be a month before the presidential election. "

"We may have to defer the full celebration until later in November."

Christine, a mother from Evanston, Illinois, asked him the question because she was coming up on her own 20th wedding anniversary. Mr. Obama thanked her on behalf of husbands everywhere: "The fact that you guys put up with us for 20 years is pretty remarkable and I'm grateful for it every day."

These events have to be good for Obama's image. While watching it you get the idea he's just another Dad, that wants to keep his country strong for his children's sake and our children's sake.

I am amused, but not surprised, by the pro-Obama spin CBS puts on this story. Clearly Pres. Obama's "interesting" comment shows a man without sincerity. Reminds me Michael Dukakis' answer to what he would do if his wife was raped and murdered. That old media bias raises its ugly head. Just like they did in the 08 election.

What in the world was negative about this story?
He answered questions - they showed the entire video of the questions and answers. How can you spin that at all?

Some leaders have practical and proven solutions, and others have charisma. President Obama has charisma, but we need practical and proven solutions. Many military leaders and economist agree that the greatest threat to the security of the United States is our horrible national debt, and the fact that we are continuing the out of control deficit spending. During President Obama's SOTU address he never once mention the national debt or a solution to the disastrous massive deficit spending.

How can a President of the United States give a State of the Union address (a status of the shape of the nation), and never once mention the greatest threat to our nation? It is because President Obama has NO PLAN to stop the irresponsible massive deficit spending. Just last month he mentioned that he wanted $1.2 in deficit spending. This man has ZERO practical plans, and a boat load of charm. When are the American voters going to wake up and elect a President who has practical solutions and is willing to make the difficult decisions needed to turn this country around?

We are all on a train racing toward the end of the tracks; a situation where the tracks end at the edge of a cliff. It is critical that we elect a President and members of Congress who have practical and proven solutions and are gutsy enough to make the tough decisions. We must elect responsible leaders this time.

Make that "he wanted $1.2 trillion more in deficit spending". This nonsense has to stop, and President Obama has NO PLAN - only a smile.

Hi, I would like to substantiate Jennifer & her husbands situation. I am an IT professional, (25 years of experience) and finding it very difficult to gain employment. Competition is a good thing but the H1s have made it impossible for Americans to earn a living today. Here are a FEW of my examples... I am working on a project now and everyone on the team, plus the 2 companies that eventually hired me are all H1s. Prior to this I was on an IBM project in Atlanta, I was interviewed by all H1 Indians, and all of the employees that I worked with at the client site were H1Bs. Prior to that I worked for Solar Turbines, a division of Caterpillar, guess what the entire team I worked with were H1Bs! I have 2 American consultant friends who are 'on the bench', e.g. out of work right now and they are not able to find work, the H1's have taken our jobs away! What is interesting is that companies, like IBM have figured out that they can now bring H1's here, by the thousands. I have been told that this is termed as 'on-shoring'. President Obama, we hope that you can restrict/limit this type of visa, when we have high rates of unemployment here in the USA. Also, it would be interesting to find out the statistics over the last 10 years of H1 & J type visas & the documentation supporting them? Thank you!

What a shame, a President that destroys the lives of so many to please big pharma and big alcohol. Not unlike other leaders, but he ran and was elected on being different. Hope and change remains dead. Cannabis is legal in the eyes of the one that created it (GOD), whether the corrupt and evil people of this world acknowledge this fact or not.
