Bob Dole hopes Gingrich has no chance to be president

The former Republican senator from Kansas and presidential candidate Bob Dole has thrown his support behind Mitt Romney and decisively against Newt Gingrich. Dole described Gingrich in a recent "CBS Sunday Morning" interview with Rita Braver as "very bright, "very articulate" and a "good debater," but said he found him "very difficult to work with."

When asked if he thought Gingrich had a chance to be president, he responded, "I hope not."

On Thursday the Romney campaign released a blunt critique of Gingrich by the 88-year-old Dole. He wrote that Gingrich as the nominee would "have an adverse impact on Republican candidates running for county, state and federal offices," and that he was a "one man band" set on "his way or the highway." Following is the full text:

I have not been critical of Newt Gingrich, but it is now time to take a stand before it is too late. Hardly anyone who served with Newt in Congress has endorsed him and that fact speaks for itself. He was a one-man-band who rarely took advice. It was his way or the highway.

Gingrich served as speaker from 1995 to 1999 and had trouble within his own party. Already in 1997 a number of House members wanted to throw him out as speaker. But he hung on until after the 1998 elections when the writing was on the wall. His mounting ethics problems caused him to resign in early 1999. I know whereof I speak as I helped establish a line of credit of $150,000 to help Newt pay off the fine for his ethics violations. In the end, he paid the fine with money from other sources.

Gingrich had a new idea every minute and most of them were off the wall. He loved picking a fight with Bill Clinton because he knew this would get the attention of the press. This and a myriad of other specifics helped to topple Gingrich in 1998.

In my run for the presidency in 1996 the Democrats greeted me with a number of negative TV ads, and in every one of them Newt was in the ad. He was very unpopular and I am not only certain that this did not help me, but that it also cost House seats that year. Newt would show up at the campaign headquarters with an empty ice-bucket in his hand -- that was a symbol of some sort for him -- and I never did know what he was doing or why he was doing it.

In my opinion if we want to avoid an Obama landslide in November, Republicans should nominate Governor Romney as our standard bearer. He has the requisite experience in the public and private sectors. He would be a president we could have confidence in.

Other Republican figures have also weighed in on Gingrich's fitness as the GOP nominee. Elliott Abrams, an assistant secretary of state in the Reagan administration, said Gingrich overstated his closeness to the Reagan administration. He termed Gingrich's claims of having "worked with President Reagan to change things in Washington" as "misleading at best," in an article in the conservative National Review magazine.

Only a handful of members of Congress have backed Gingrich, while more than 70 House and Senate members have endorsed Romney. Romney supporter Utah Republican Rep. Jason Chaffetz explained, "Clearly people understand that Newt Gingrich is a product of Washington, D.C. And there's a reason there's a lot of us newbies in Congress want Mitt Romney: because we want someone from the outside." Republican New York Rep. Peter King labeled Gingrich "too erratic and "too self-centered."

New Jersey Governor and Mitt Romney surrogate Chris Christie has called Gingrich an "embarrassment" to the Republican party.

In a recent campaign stop in Florida, Gingrich said, "I think the Washington establishment is going fight me every steps to the nomination. And I think they are going to say whatever they have to say."

Crunch time is here conservatives need to get behind Newt Gingrich. I am surprised Santorum has not thrown already his weight behind Newt Gingrich with the understanding it is for Florida only. It is hopeless for Santorum in Florida. Santorum will only guarantee a Mitt Romney victory in Florida. Mr. Santorum you never have a chance against Mitt Romney's money. If you let Newt Gingrich take on Mitt Romney on a equal footing in Florida you would stand a much BETTER chance against Newt Gingrich later. Mr. Santorum if you are not the nominee who would you rather pick the next 2 supreme court justices Mitt Romney or Newt Gingrich? Do you have a conscious Mr. Santorum or are you vain? No insult intended Mr. Santorum surely the logic is inescapable, cede Florida to Newt Gingrich in a temporary strategic alliance which would allow you and Newt Gingrich to live to fight another day !!!

I feel that Newt will stand up for our Christian values much more than Romney will. Romney seems to have the personality that he does not want to offend anyone. It is understandable that former office holders like Bob Dole would be against Newt. I think they feel that they might have to be a little respectful of him. I just saw Tom Brokaw in an ad for Romney. I wish I had not seen that. I had wanted to remember him for his good broadcasting.

It is the likes of Dole who make me know Speaker Gingrich IS THE RIGHT PERSON to remove NObama. Dole and his ilk could not control Gingrich; that is why they don't want him in the White House. They cannot control him.

On the other hand, the money behind Romney makes me think he will go into Washington with a LOT of payback owed, and he will trade away everything and anything because of that debt to all that money.

I also believe the reason so many Washington "insiders", former and current, back Romney is that, they feel they can manipulate Romney because he is not as strong a character as Gingrich.

Again, Bob Dole himself admits that Gingrich is tough. We need someone who is a take- charge, in-your-face, get- it-done President. That would be Newt Gingrich.

Speaker Gingrich does not need a "new debate coach" to teach him how to ACT tough.

Newt IS tough. We NEED Newt Gingrich to whip Washington out of its malaise and dysfunction and to FIX OUR COUNTRY.

I am from Kansas and there was a time when we thought that Bob Dole could be brutally acerbic during a campaign or a political fight. He came across on television as rather dull, but if you ever heard him speak in person, he was witty, deadly with that wit, and very bright. Like him or no, he at least had some class. This current Republican gang reminds me of a pack of amoral thugs that care nothing at all about America or Americans and only about their own power, their own wallets, and their own reelection. Dispicible bunch. Yuck!

Bob Dole has proven himself to be an easily misled politician throughout his career that I would not take his recommendation on anything at all. He is so gullible and swayed so easily.

Put Newt in the White House and the following election will result in a pendulum swing the opposite direction that is greater than what we have now.

How about some common sense, middle of the road candidates?

When did the ability to compromise and work together become a bad thing?

It will never happen but divorce Obama of give away Pelosia and Reid, and divorce ole Mitt of his GOP buddies, put them at a resort for a few weeks, and these guys could actually solve some problems.

Their solutions would never pass our divided reps, but I would still like to see what they could develop.

dreaming......

I would agree with Mr. Dole. It's people like him and John McCain who know would serve our country best. They were in Washington longer and probably know how these men work. I myself don't trust Gingrich. Either way be it Gingrich or Romney that ends up in the White House, it's still better than what we have now.
