Romney offers broad estimate of net worth

MIAMI -- Mitt Romney seemed less than eager to answer Wednesday when Jorge Ramos, moderator of a candidate event at Univision, asked him pointblank: "How much money do you have?"

"Well, you tell me and I'll tell you," Romney joked. To which Ramos replied: "I'm not running for president."

Romney said he understood and referred Ramos to a financial disclosure statement of his assets. "I think the estimate in there was a pretty wide range, it's been widely reported and my net worth is within that number," he said. "It's between 150 and about 200-and-some-odd million dollars, I think that's what the estimates are."

Romney added that "by the way, I didn't inherit that." He said when his parents died, he gave away what they gave him to charity and to his children. "What my wife and I have, we earned," Romney said.

Romney, whose father was born in Mexico, laughed when asked if he could claim to be Mexican-American. He joked that he wouldn't make that claim but "I would appreciate it if you could get that word out."

Romney has released two years of tax information, and I understand that he gives away 15% of his earnings to his church and charities. I would like to see the percentage that the Obama's give away to churches and charities. President Obama is big on giving away taxpayer money (other people's money), but I don't see him doing much out of his own pocket. I would like to see him prove me wrong, but I doubt he can.

Success?! Mitt is a success? HA!

Mitt's daddy was a multi-millionaire whose wealth opened the doors of the best schools for Mitt. (I doubt it was his essay.) He went STRAIGHT from B-school into his daddy's BEST friend's company (Bain) as a VICE PRESIDENT! After some time, Bain offered him the opportunity to start, and head, Bain Capital with the guarantee that if he failed, he could have his old job back, and gave him seed money ($5 million according to some accounts).

Mitt parlayed that $5 million into his estate estimated at $200 millon.

BIG FUZZY DUCK!

I'm four years younger than Mitt. My daddy couldn't afford my college, so I worked two jobs, and after 6 years, I graduated from a 3rd-tier state school with a MasterCard ($250 limit) and less than $100 in a savings account.

I parlayed that $100 into an estate that is worth just over $2 million today.

Mitt is the very embodiment of the "How to make $1 million". First, you take $5 million and then...

Funny how so many posts seem to disparage rich people yet if any one of them waved a million bucks in front you, you'd just about kill to be first in line to take it.

Sure Mitt, you're just the average hard working American struggling to provide for your family. No wonder you consider close to $400,000.00 a year in speaking fees a "little".

Romney made a huge fortune while workers lost jobs, stockholders and creditors lost money.

In 1992, Mitt Romney was running Bain Capital, a private equity firm. Bain Capital bought American Pad & Paper Co. (Ampad) for $5 million.

Over the next several years Romney's firm bled the company dry. Hundreds of workers lost their jobs. Stockholders were left with worthless shares. Creditors and vendors were paid less than 50 cents on the dollar. While they were exploiting the company, Romney's firm charged Ampad millions of dollars in "management fees." In all, Romney and his investors reaped more than $100 million dollars from the deal.
