Newt Gingrich: Being gay is a choice for some

Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich suggested Thursday that being gay is a choice. At least for some people.

Asked if people can choose to be gay, Gingrich told the Des Moines Register editorial board that he does not "believe in genetic determinism, and I don't think there is any great evidence of genetic determinism."

He said that certain people may choose to be gay if they have certain genetic traits and are raised in a certain environment.

"I think people have a significant range of choice within a genetic pattern," he said. "I believe it's a combination of genetics and environment. I think that both are involved. I think people have many ranges of choices."

Gingrich's appears to be saying people can choose to be gay if they have certain "propensities" and genetic and environmental characteristics. Asked if people can choose to be straight, he responded, "Look, people choose to be celibate."

"People choose many things in life," he said. "You know, there is a bias in favor of non-celibacy. It's part of how the species recreates. And yet there is a substantial amount of people who choose celibacy either out of religious vocation or for other reasons."

Earlier in the interview, Gingrich was asked if he saw a correlation between the civil rights and gay rights movements. He called the parallel "ludicrous" and "offensive," saying no one is trying to segregate gay Americans. The former House speaker added that his position reflects "a 3,000 year tradition that is very deep in our culture for very profound reasons."

"I think there's an enormous difference between an inescapable fact of race...and a question about culture," he said. "A question about 'what are your values?' I think marriage is between a man and a woman. That's a value proposition."

"There's a big difference between saying that you are going to have an acceptance of people's lifestyle and saying you now are going to normalize that as the standard for the whole country," he continued, before reiterating his support for reinstating the military's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy.

Gingrich, whose half-sister Candace Gingrich-Jones is gay, earlier this week said he supported sending a constitutional amendment barring same-sex marriage to the states.

A fair question to asked each of the Candidates Mitt Romney, Newt, Rick, and Paul.

Do you think it is fair for Millionaire to pay LESS taxes than a secretary or any other average worker that is making 50,000 a years. In other words, 15% for millionaires and 30% for the average worker. Simple yes or no ....no added or reason why...just yes or no if it is fair?

Many "young and naive secularists" are busy following Obama's leading on his sexually permissive agenda, and the result of that will lead "to the demise of traditional values and families.

I wonder what Newt's opinion is about stoning adulterers... that's a tradition, too.

Sexual orientation is hardly a matter of choice. Sure, you can choose to repress your sexual orientation, but that path has lead to a lot of misery.

For all of the people wringing their hands over whether they can cope with other peoples' sexuality: we Heteros have been blatantly making a show of our sexual views and escapades for years. Newt is high on the list of people whose sex lives are TMI!

Gingrich said that it is a choice made by some. Anne Heche was "straight", then she was "gay", and now she is "Straight" again. It is apparent that she has been one of those people who made it a choice. Some people are born with tendencies toward being gay, and some make a choice to orientate toward those of the same gender. Why is Gingrich's statement even questioned?

so, according to this intellectual giant, poor kids choose not to work and to continue to be poor ... gay people choose to be gay and to suffer prejudice and descrimination...
Gee. Wonder how high up his elevator really goes? Certainly not all the way to thinking level.

He's confusing sexual orientation, as in personal preference with choices that are not necessarily made out of personal preference. For example someone may have been raised in such a way as to hate the thought of thinking sexually about blacks or asians, like raised in a racist environment, or a female been traumatized/abused by a male and so only being attracted to females and/or abusive males. But choosing for example to be alone in your house one day or to fast rather than eating has to do with choices that may have nothing to do with personal preference but for example, a matter of survival or boosting your health or having some peace. But as for whether it's a choice, yes, lust and love are choices, but they can be hard to break because of how you may have been raised and allowing yourself to think a certain way for a long time, and because feeling certain emotions can cause an addiction, like a man lusting after women to no end gets endorphin rushes, and it becomes addictive despite it being unhealthy to simply lust to no end. - http://eternian.wordpress.com
