Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker braces for recall effort

Wisconsin's Republican Gov. Scott Walker's opponents are well on their way to collecting enough signatures to force a recall vote against the governor -- and he's taking notice.

"Do I take the recall seriously? Absolutely," Walker said this week at a meeting of the Republican Governors Association in Orlando, Florida, Bloomberg News reported. "Unions spent $40 million on six state Senate recall elections in my state. I spent $13 million running for governor. So if there's that much outside influence, I'm going to take that seriously no matter what."

The recall efforts against Walker and other state legislators were spurred by the controversial law Walker passed in the spring, nearly eliminating public workers' collective bargaining rights. The fight over the legislation prompted weeks of raucous protests in the state and even inspired some Democratic lawmakers to flee the state.

A total of nine state legislators faced recall elections over the summer. Democrats managed to pick up two seats in the state Senate, but Republicans held onto the majority.

Now, the group United Wisconsin says it's collected more than half the signatures needed to hold a recall election against Walker. The group said on Monday that it had collected more than 300,000 signatures in just 12 days, the Wisconsin Journal Sentinel reported. The numbers can't be independently verified until United Wisconsin submits the signatures to state election authorities. The group has until January 17 to collected at least 540,208 signatures.

A recall election against Walker would likely take place in the late spring or summer of next year.

While the recall election isn't a sure thing yet, the governor is already buying television ads to defend his record, USA Today reports. Additionally, Republican volunteers will soon be going door to door and making phone calls to support Walker's controversial law. The governor will also get some help with advertising from the national conservative group Americans for Prosperity, according to USA Today.

Walker said at the RGA meeting this week that voters need time to recognize the benefits of his controversial law, intended to help reduce budget deficits.

"Every day, every week and every month that goes by, the voters of my state will more clearly see the benefits of the reforms," he said, according to Bloomberg. "People have a clear choice."

When Walker looses his Job. Not if, when. I don't see anyone who would be crazy enough to hire that Idiot. Any private sector company that hires him will be Black balled and Boycotted by all Unions locally and nationally. That's a fact. So if your thinking about hiring old Scotty boy. You better think twice. Put him on the unemployment line and allow his benefits to run out. See how he likes it.

Walker has been sitting at the table with the Koch Brothers for a long time ... and he is whining about outside influences! Of course he wants to deprive public workers of their rights! A lot more signatures are needed for the recall but I think they will get them. I have no doubt Walker is taking the recall serious. Hey Koch, need some more money! LOL

Oh, that's rich. Walker complaining about "outside influence"....after getting tape recorded kissing the ass of a man who he thought was his benefactor - David Koch. Walker is bought and paid for by outside-Wisconsin interests such as the Koch Brothers.

Give it a rest, dirtbag!

Walker is more than just his budget repair bill, but if collective bargaining is brought back to the state, will the abuses (http://eng.am/oVovMT) of it continue to place the burden of public sector compensation on taxpayers in the state?

A candidate who kowtows to the unions would be much more harmful to state. When you see typical blue states like New York trying to take a hard line with public sector unions, it's clear this is no longer a red state/blue state issue (http://eng.am/qh2i1T).

You have to worry a little bit about the implications of a potential recall. The large issue at hand here is that the rules for a recall in Wisconsin are incredibly lax. Consider if all that was needed to trigger Presidential recalls was 25% of the voting populace. Pretty much every recent president would face a recall.

The real damage is that it essentially this kind of reaction will discourage to politicians to ever try to break from the norm when creating legislation and that will lead to a continuous cycle of ineffective government.

As you can see there is an incredible amount of anger focused on Walker. While he and his supporters push it off on "union thugs", it is much more than that. He created a budget crisis by immediately, when taking office, instituting tax breaks for corporations with no means to pay for them. He has ripped spending on education. He has slashed health care for the poor. He has sold out the environmen. And yes, he has revoked collective bargaining for public employees. He is ruining our state. Simple as that.

I suggest we rename "Americans for Prosperity"! It should be called "Americans for the Rich"! Walker is just their pawn. I do have to thank Walker for waking us UP the way he did.
"Americans for the Rich" better find smarter pawns in the future.

Kick this dirtbag out and take away HIS benefits, show him who really calls the shots Wisconsin, the voters! I will be happy for Wisconsin when they can name a new, fair, sane Governor that will reverse the insanity this shill Walker forced on your state. The rest of the country is sick of looking at and hearing about this mental case, time to join the ranks of the unemployed Americans you kick while they are down Walker and time for the workers who you screwed out of their benefits to take away your benefits! good riddance to you and all the other radicals like you that are a toxic acid to America corroding everything we have built through the years.

Scott Walker does not even have a college degree. The only way he has led this state is by abusing power. He is an embarassment to WI. People are coming into offices around the state in droves to sign the petitions and they are not all union members as he would have people believe. They are stopping on the streets steadily to sign as well - and bringing their friends and family members along. He has turned this state upside down. RECALL cannot come soon enough - and it will come.

Most GOP commentators don't have a college degree either to include the electorate. Big deal as most are as stupid as long as a day on Mercury
