Obama Heads to Asia, Breaks Foreign Travel Record

Even before President Obama sets foot on Air Force One tomorrow to begin a 9-day trip to Asia, he has traveled to more countries in his first year in office than any of his predecessors.

Since taking office, he has made 7 foreign trips and visited 16 countries, 3 of them twice.

The Asia trip – which takes him to Japan, Singapore, China and South Korea – will bring his total to 8 foreign trips and 20 countries.

The only other president to come close to Mr. Obama's first-year-in-office globe-trotting numbers is President George H. W. Bush, who took 7 foreign trips to 14 countries.

His son traveled abroad five times to 11 countries during his first year. President Clinton only did 2 foreign trips to 3 nations in 1993.

Foreign travel by American presidents is a relatively new practice. No sitting U.S. president left the country until Theodore Roosevelt in 1906. He made a single foreign outing: a 3-day visit to Panama in November of that year to inspect construction of the Panama Canal.

?First Year Foreign Travel By U.S. Presidents

Mr. Obama's destinations in Asia are all first-time visits for him – including two stops in China: Shanghai and Beijing. The showdowns with Iran and North Korea over their respective nuclear programs top the agenda with Chinese leaders – whose help the White House regards as indispensable. It's thought to be the reason one Mr. Obama declined a meeting last month with the Dali Llama – for fear a meeting with the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader might irritate Chinese leaders just weeks before visiting with them.

Tokyo is the President's first stop in Asia. He'll confer there with the new Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama and also have a rare meeting with Japan's Emperor Akihito.

In Singapore, Mr. Obama attends the annual Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation forum to discuss efforts to promote global economic growth. Since Russia is an APEC member, Mr. Obama will have a one-on-one there with Pres. Dmitry Medvedev. He'll also hold a "bilateral" there with President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono of Indonesia, a nation in which Mr. Obama lived for 4 years as a boy.

"The president feels a great connection to Indonesia," said Ben Rhodes, White House Deputy National Security Advisor.

Mr. Obama's final stop is South Korea, where he'll discuss the problems and threats North Korea poses with President Lee Myung-bak. He'll also visit with U.S. military personnel stationed in South Korea.

Some speculate the president might return home by way of Afghanistan for talks with newly reelected President Hamid Karzai. Mr. Obama is expected to announce soon after his return home his new strategy on Afghanistan – and how many additional U.S. troops he'll deploy there.

This Asia trip is not Mr. Obama's last foreign foray of the year. He's scheduled to travel to Oslo next month to accept the Nobel Peace Prize he was awarded in October. And he may stay or head back to Scandinavia to attend the United Nations Conference on Climate Change a few days later.

It will further secure his record as having done more foreign travel than any U.S. president to date.

Even though the President was my boss, I respect the position not the man until he proves that he has what it takes. So far non in my life time has shown the leadership and responsibility needed for the success of this country. I love this country and I think anyone that has a problem with it, as it is, should stop "hating" and suck it up.

If B.O. would stay HOME working half the time he's spent flying all over the world, and actually KEPT the "promises" he's made, maybe I'd feel like voting for him wasn't a HUGE mistake!! He's obviously a narcissist who loves to travel around-ON OUR TAX MONEY!-speaking to adoring, know-nothing crowds so he can get his ego boost! AMERICA IS FURIOUS!! At the lack of respect from our spenders/"leaders"! At the fact that our jobs are going to Mexico and yet their people keep coming here! At the fact that the "healthcare" monstrocity was passed because of his bribes and at a time when the deficit is thru the roof!- and will create 159 NEW GOV AGENCIES, that tax-payers will have to fund!! And because 18% of us are now UN or UNDER-employed!! And Mr. B.O.? Well, he's getting a nice, thorough world tour complete w/ private chef, body-guards and anything he desires. Who is stupid enuf to think he is actually HELPING America? Too bad we can't vote HIM out today and save ourselves several trillion from more of his "change"!!!

Yes, apologising for the absolute destruction Bush and the GOP caused and letting the world know that we have charted a new course as a nation is an unfortunate but necessary task that our new President has to carry out.

You're right, 8 long years of f*ck you diplomacy has has taken a terrible toll on our relations with our allies.

I agree one hundred per cent, ominvorous, on AL Gore being a hypocrite,
he sure snowed Obama on this Global warming and going green. And that's
really hurt the american peoples jobs. And wasted a lot of money also.
He's the only one getting rich off the snow jobs.

From the table above the two Bush presidencies combined for 25 countries and 12 trips in their first year. That is a lot of fences to mend.

Why do you hate America so much? Obama is a disgrace as a president. He has apologized to all muslim nations for the heinous acts of the American Government and its apparent assault on Islam. He loves Allah! Wake up! The US is at war with Allah....not muslims. Our Commander in Chief can't even admit Ft.Hood was an act of terror. He doesn't want to offend his muslim brothers or Islamic mullahs. You "Carter loving liberals" put himin office and now you will have Iraq all over again in Afghanistan. Not only that, your idol Obama is letting N.Korea and Iran go nuclear! Wake up! When a mushroom cloud hits our soil cause you voted in a muslim loving CIC there will be a lot of us right wingers looking for you.

Obama is doing what he suppose to be doing as the leader of one of the most powerful nations. We are not isolated here in the US and Bush did eveything he could to destroy our relationships with other countries. Good for Obama and good for the United States.
