Snowe: Public Option the Breaking Point

Sen. Olympia Snowe may have been the lone Republican on the Senate Finance Committee to approve that panel's health care bill, but she plans to draw the line at the public option as the legislative process continues.

"Because I prefer in utilizing the private sector as we do in this legislation that doesn't include a public option. I think the government would have a disproportionate advantage in the marketplace against private insurers," Snowe, R-Maine, told "Early Show" co-anchor Harry Smith Wednesday. "But at the same time, I want to make sure the insurance industry performs and that's why we eliminate and prohibit many egregious practices."

Appearing later ABC's "Good Morning America," Snowe said that if the insurance industry failed to live up to the new standards, "then you could have the public option kick in immediately."

The Finance Committee in a 14-9 vote Tuesday. While it's considered the most moderate of the five plans voted through various congressional committees, it must be merged with the other legislation before coming to a wider vote in the Senate. Snowe said her initial vote is no guarantee of future support, depending on how the plan changes during the .

Snowe said the fact that she was the only Republican to vote the plan out of committee doesn't mean there aren't points of agreement between the two parties.

"Everybody, obviously, has an opinion, a viewpoint [on health care]- we're all affected by it in one way or the other. … So we couldn't culminate a result or agreement didn't mean to say there weren't places where we couldn't agree.

Snowe said she "felt it was important to move this process forward" and that lawmakers "at least have to try given the urgency and the crisis that exists within health care today."

The Finance Committee's bill was a "good place to start," Snowe told ABC.

Snowe failure to achieve reform would be "disastrous" for the country and likened health care's rising costs to a "death spiral." She said all lawmakers would share responsibility for not passing a plan.

"Well, I think we all will, absolutely, if we don't contribute to a result," Snowe said. "And that means both sides. And I would hope that the Democrats would include Republican ideas. It's not a question of who is giving the idea, it's whether or not it's a good idea."

Public option = path to single payer = path to socialism = path to government tyranny.

But do feel free to tell us how many "dictatorships" or "tyrannous nation's" exist in mostly socialist Europe, even though they've been socialist societies for CENTURIES.

Hey Rob: where's your answer?

And you believe the government can run health care in a cost effective manner. Look at the health care systems the government runs now. Rife with corruption and ineptitude. And you expect these people to run health care for the nation? That is insanity.

Where is more money "lost": in government run programs or on insurance companies profits and operating costs?

I'd rather have my health insurance money go to a government program, than to some greedy scummbbag that's going to deny my benefits when I need them most!!

They don't want competition among private insureres but they want a public option that will have unfair advantages (tax payer subsudies) over the private insurers. This is an attempt to drive private insurers out of the market which creates the Obama/Pelosi dream of single payer.

Private insurers put "profit" over "health" and cause TENS OF THOUSANDS of needless deaths every year, all because of greed.

They shouldn't just be put out of business, the CEO's and board members should be in jail for criminally negligent homicide!!

You are a liberal hungry, not a moderate so don't attempt to speek for maderates. If so many laugh at FOX polls why is FOX's viewership double that of it's nearest competitor? Why is FOX's audience the most demographically mixed?

This is the second time that you've mentioned this joke.

Fox news is NOT demographically mixed, unless you consider "over 70", "white", and "christian" to be a "mix".

And like I said yesterday, most liberals and moderates aren't retired or bed ridden like MOST of Fox's viewers are, so they aren't sitting at home all day watching TV.

Private industry has PROVEN that they cannot effectively run our nation's health care system in a cost effective manner.

Public option = path to single payer = path to socialism = path to government tyranny.

Turn off the Fox News Rob.

Socialism is a very, very effective method of governing certain sectors of the economy that can't be ran very well by private industries.

Police, fire, highway, 9-1-1 call centers are all examples of how effective government ran programs in comparison to private companies.

Private industry has PROVEN that they cannot effectively run our nation's health care system in a cost effective manner.

But do feel free to tell us how many "dictatorships" or "tyrannous nation's" exist in mostly socialist Europe, even though they've been socialist societies for CENTURIES.

No it is NOT competition. Thanks Ms_enza for making the point I have been trying to make all along. The government has rigged the system so there is no competition!! And now, it wants to make sure there continues to be no competition!

To be clear: your claim is that the government has rigged the system so that there is no competition, and that's why it costs so much.

And now the democrats want the public option to bring competition into the mix, and you oppose it steadfastly.

And while the democrats are trying to bring "competition" into the mix, you're claiming that they want to make sure that there CONTINUES to be no competition?

Sounds to me like you agree with Obama on health care reform!!!

Good Job!!

Correction: we moderates and liberals that make up 80% of the country, laugh at the fox news polls, about as much as you conservatives laugh at CBS polls.

And NBC polls.

And ABC polls.

And USA Today polls.

And Gallup polls.

And Associated Press polls.

And Quinnipiac polls.

And Pew Research polls.

And NY Times polls.

And Wall Street Journal polls.

And Washington Post polls.

A couple reasons I can think of, Rob -

1) fear sells

and

2) those in the middle and on the left who also watch in order to know what those on the right are being told.

The state of Maine has so many deep deep economic and social problems based on it terrible economic situation problems. Maine has some of the poorest counties in the United States. A drive through Maine and you will see many people with no front teeth. This leaves me wonder if they have any sort of health care.

I am so shocked how someone for Maine can vote for a republican.
