Obama on Iran: "Talk is no Substitute for Action"

President Obama said today that talks with Iran in Geneva represented a "constructive beginning" but that "it must be followed with constructive action by the Iranian government."

"Talk is no substitute for action," the president said, stating that the United States is prepared to apply increased pressure to the country. "Our patience is not unlimited."

The talks in Geneva involve Iran and the so-called "P5-plus-1" countries – the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council (the U.S., Britain, China, France and Russia) as well as Germany.

They are focused on Iran's nuclear capability and come in the wake of revelations that Iran has been building a covert nuclear facility in Qom that appears to be designed for the production of a nuclear weapon. (Pictured below.)

The president said Thursday that Iran "heard a clear and unified message from the international community" at the talks in Geneva. He said the country must display a "commitment to transparency" in the coming weeks.

"The P5-plus-1 is united and we have an international community that has reaffirmed its commitment to nonproliferation and disarmament," he said.

To that end, the president said the country "must grant unfettered access to [International Atomic Energy Agency] inspectors within two weeks."

He also said Iran must also prove that its nuclear program is meant for "peaceful purposes," not the production of weapons.

"Iran must demonstrate through concrete steps that it will live up to its responsibilities with regard to its nuclear program," the president said.

"As I've said before, we support Iran's right to peaceful nuclear power," Mr. Obama added. He said for Iran to transfer low-enriched uranium to a third country for fuel fabrication "would be a step towards building confidence that Iran's program is in fact peaceful."

"Going forward, we expect to see swift action," he said. "We're committed to serious and meaningful engagement, but we're not interested in talking for the sake of talking."

"If Iran does not take steps in the near future to live up to its obligations, then the United States will not continue to negotiate indefinitely, and we are prepared to move towards increased pressure," he continued.

The president said if Iran does "live up to its obligations," it will be able to take "a path towards a better relationship with the United States, increased integration for Iran within the international community, and a better future for all Iranians."

Mr. Obama added that "we've entered a phase of intensive international negotiations" in which "pledges of cooperation must be fulfilled."

"This is not about singling out Iran; this is not about creating double standards," he concluded. "This is about the global nonproliferation regime and Iran's right to peaceful nuclear energy, just as all nations have it, but with that right comes responsibilities."

"And the burden of meeting these responsibilities lies with the Iranian government, and they are now the ones that need to make that choice," Mr. Obama said.

Diplomacy was a necessary step to negotiate with the Iranian scheme, but the purpose must be shutdown of nuclear weapons projects, otherwise it will be necessary to proceed to the only alternative, the action.

at the end of the day, the real trouble in the middle east is not Iran but Isreal.Isreal is stealing palestian land day by day and is fooling a lot of people (not me)because they wrote in their bible that God choose them (nonsence).God sent Jesus for the jews and they crusifide him.
How can they be chosen. The U.S went to war in Iraq for Isreal and now Isreal wants the U.S to attack Iran for them.

Oh yeah BTW, the best thing to happen for the American people (sadly) is if Chicago does NOT get the Olympics. For one, they will throw all those tenants living at Grove Park slum and other places out on the ears, the public will pay for an Olympics that will not make any money but only COST money. Any jobs growth will be low paying, mostly selling crap until the games are over and then you'll have a useless sports complex that will grow cobwebs.
If Rezko is a slum lord and a criminal, what is Valerie Jarrett and by one degree of separation, Michelle Obama? Sad, Chicago is my favorite city but unfortunately it is run by well heeled, vermin.

This is very interesting...indeed. You can speculate all you want. But when the powers at be decide ( and believe me, we have NO Say whatsoever ) make the decision that this little country, regime, president, mullah, supreme leader or what ever threatens their control and or power, they will vaporize every living thing in the region...And they will do it in the name of peace. They will say we had to kill a million to save a billion. They play this game to win. At all costs, so please keep posting how the Iranians are laughing at us. Please keep posting that the President is weak. Please keep posting that talking to the Iranians is some form of appeasement.

And by all means...please tell me how any retaliatory strike, from most likely Russia will be able to tell the difference and know that you were a Democrat or a Republican and spare your life in the blast...

I'll be waiting for the response...

Generally I am a hawk. But it is obvious to me that when they say despots start wars to divert attention from other problems at home, I never thought of it as much as a universal thing. But it is obvious we (the public) are being slowly prepped for a war with Iran. It seems it is one thing that will unify Americans and conversely Iranians, so buckle-up. Maybe like Bush, Bar-Oby will wrap himself in the flag and maybe even get re-elected as a "patriot". It is disgusting what this goverment has devolved into. As an Airborne and SF vet, former Cold Warrior I must admit that for the first time in my life I would not want to see my son or other's sons join the military and put on the uniform for Obama. Ron Paul was perhaps unelectable but he was the best candidate. Both the Republican and Democrat parties are rancid. But I see no alternative and Republicans as the lesser of two evils because Socialist/Marxists (today's Democratic party) suck, worst of all. Neither the Rep or Dem parties stand for anything or anyone but themselves within the sewer that is Washington.

Ahh, ha, ha, ha oh, he' too funny. This is the guy who, after meeting with General McChrystal for only the 2nd time since his innauguration, needs 'a few weeks' to evaluate what he wants to do in Afghanistan. Yeah, that's a good one Bar-Oby I guess winning the Olympics so you, Valerie Jarrett, Rezko and your other corrupt cronies can get rich selling those slums they all own, to build Olympic Village is more important than Soldiers with their butts on the line - you P.O.S.

Either he wants push his agenda through with no forethought or, he wants to delay to death anything his handlers haven't prepared him for, This guy is in so far over his headit is sad. He is inept and his only saving grace is that he reads speeches really well I mean, he reads a teleprompter like he really means it. My God this is going to be a long an pernicious Presidential term. We can only hope there is only one.

And what's with the Bush comparisons like Bar-Oby is better than Bush. Bush screwed it up and Bar-Oby is no better, and worse. It is bad enough to have 3 terms of 2 fools in that office (McCain would have been bad also, bending over whenever he's asked for the sake of 'non-partisanship)) not to mention being surrounded by traitorous Congressmen and Senators from both parties. The elections cannot arrive soon enough. I only hope the next time there are candidates worth a da m n.

Israel has had nukes for years. Iran is the only country in the middle east that is not controlled by the u.s. or israel. Iran has no choice. Israel is trying to get us to go to war for them again. Zionism controls the media in the u.s. and wants all of you to believe differently. I know better.

Why again does Iran have no choice? if they shut down nuke production and dont try to get the bomb...who will threaten to invade them then?

You have things backwards. It is because Iran is seeking nukes that Israel is threatening them (as they should!). If Iran would not go for nukes and leave Israel alone...Israel wouldnt even bother commenting on Iran.

NUCLEAR PROLIFERATION, OBAMA STYLE...

Going to the table to ?talk? when you have no will, and you have given up the leverage that Russia could have provided, will now prove futile. It will also allow Iran to continue apace the development of its nuclear weapons.

Obama gave up a powerful element when he backed off the Europe based missile shield without concessions from Putin.

http://pacificgatepost.blogspot.com/2009/09/obamas-blunder-on-iran.html

Additional sanctions will achieve nothing other than hurt Iranians who will ?blame? the West.
