Grassley: "Obama-Care" Wouldn't Help Kennedy

Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) also slammed "Obama-care," as well as the health care bills already introduced in the House and the Senate, saying "none of those would get my votes."

Grassley is one of six Republicans and Democrats hammering out a bipartisan compromise in secretive meetings led by Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus (D-Mont.). Baucus' "group of six" is meeting with the president today to discuss progress on their compromise.

Grassley said on the radio show that is optimistic about passing some kind of health care legislation this year.

"I believe (it will happen) because there's a spirit, even among minority party members" that things need to change, Grassley said. He gave as an example of the Republican party's interest in the matter the Senate Doctor Show hosted by two Republican Senators with medical degrees.

"They aren't for the Kennedy bill, or the Pelosi bill or Obama-care," Grassley said. "But they will tell you about the third of the dollars we spend on care are wasted in America, and we've got to change things."

He sharply criticized Democrats' plans to establish a government-sponsored health insurance option, alluding to two common health care myths that I wrote about today -- that health care reform will encourage euthanasia for seniors and that health care will be rationed. He used the plight of Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-Mass.), who is suffering from a brain tumor, as an example. (Read more of the 10 myths.>)

Congress must "change things in a way so that the government doesn't run our health care," Grassley said, "because in countries that have government-run health care, just to give you an example, I've been told that the brain tumor that Sen. Kennedy has — because he's 77 years old — would not be treated the way it's treated in the United States. In other words, he would not get the care that he gets here because of his age... It's a little like people saying, in a sense, when somebody gets to be 85 their life is worth less than when you're 35, and you pull the tubes on them."

Grassley said the president is a "good person" and "good intentioned," but that "he didn't serve in government long enough to understand how things work."

"I think maybe he's trying to do too much at one time," he said.

In November, 2007 my uncle in Germany was in a bad bicycle accident. He was 2 months shy of his 77th birthday. He had severe head injuries. To save his life he had 3 brain surgeries and was in intensive care for 6 weeks. After this he had several weeks of rehabilitation therapy. Out of pocket cost to him: $0.00. Grassley is a liar.

My family has great medical coverage thru employer. I don't want to have to choose between the two, but forcing me to pay for someone else to have coverage (which we already do with welfare) may leave my family no option but to go with the new goverment plan. Why are we being put in that situation??

Suppose you paid premiums on private health insurance last year and didn't make use of it, what do you think would happen to the money you paid?

That's right, it would go back into the kitty to pay for someone else's care who had more expensive claims (due to catastrophic illness, such as cancer, etc.) that added up to more than they paid in premiums.

You certainly would NOT get a refund on your premiums, just because you didn't use your insurance, now did you? Yet I don't hear you screaming at the insurance company for this.

The principle is identical.

I've been to every towwn meeting he's had since I've lived here and he came several times to our city council meetings when I was a council, a complete dick whith his hand out.

cini_citizen- I am happy for your mother's friend. If you actually believe that this socialized medicine is so fantastic, why don't you do a little more research so you can really praise this not for profit medical system? One little research project for you. Please find out where the latest medical breakthroughs and technology have been developed over the last 20 years.

Very simply: America's MEDICAL UNIVERSITIES.

NOTE: NOT at America's hospitals, NOT by America's private practice doctors, or research funded by insurance companies, but by PRIVATE LEARNING INSTITUTIONS.

PS - lots, and lots, and lots of the NEWEST medical procedures in the past few years have come from China's, Germany's, and Japan's medical systems. ALL under "universal health care".

My friend?s mother was recently diagnosed with liver cancer. The specialist said that one third of her liver would need to be removed and she might need to spend a month or more in the hospital to recover. This is not the typical horror story you have been hearing. Her mother?s surgery was approved, in full! The hospital even arranged for transportation to and from the hospital for tests, and did not charge her anything for the ambulance. The surgery is being performed by the number one surgeon in the field and his team is not asking for ANY co-pays or deductibles. I guess we could say thank God for her, she lives in Canada where saving lives is NOT for PROFIT!

Republicans exhaust me. They come out and make ridiculous statements and people actually believe them. They know their followers are as dumb as bricks and will believe anything they say AND go around repeating it.
It is my conclusion that the Republican Party is made up of people who have never had a curious moment in their entire lives. They are so intellectually lazy they just take what any Rethug tells them and never spend even 5 minutes of their time reading or asking questions.

And you are exactly the same as those who you call intelectually lazy. You are obviously toting the line of the Democratic party. People who are intelligent dont let either party dictate their opinions and question authority regardless of which side the tend to agree with the most. If you are so blind as to not see what is wrong with "your" own side then you are no better! Rethug....really, your so clever. I suppose you think everyone against the gov't option is a member of the right wing mob right? It couldn't have anything to do with people not wanting gov't to interfer with a huge part of our economy and force a single-payer gov't system down our throats. Both parties are terrible, but only one is trying to take away my freedom right now, so that is the one that people need to focus on and thankfully they are! Some of them are even democrats if you can believe that some people actually think for themselves...or are they just sellouts?
