Obama: Future of Medicare Depends on Health Care Reform

Speaking to members of AARP, the advocacy group for senior citizens, President Obama said today that Medicare benefits could be at risk without reform.

"We all know right now we've got a problem that threatens Medicare and our entire health care system," the president said. "Unless we act, within a decade, the Medicare trust fund will be in the red."

AARP members from across the country told Mr. Obama in a tele-town hall meeting that they were concerned about cuts to Medicare, as well as "rationing" that would keep older patients from getting elective care. Mr. Obama said that while reforming the health care system now will avoid cuts to Medicare, that would not be case in a decade from now if the satus quo were left in place. As health care costs rise, Congress would have to make decisions -- based on politics -- about what to potentially cut from Medicare.

"We can avoid that scenario by starting to make good decisions now," he said.

No one is currently suggesting reducing Medicare benefits, the president stressed.

"If it works, we don't want to change it," he said. "What we do want is to eliminate some of the waste being paid for out of the Medicare trust fund."

Mr. Obama pointed out that the federal government gives insurance companies $177 billion in subsidies to participate in Medicare Advantage, which allows Medicare beneficiaries to receive coverage from private insurers instead of the original, government-run Medicare plan. If insurance companies can offer competitive, quality packages to customers -- without subsidies -- they are welcome to do so, the president said.

"That's the kind of change we want to see," he said.

Mr. Obama also highlighted the plan to relieve the burden of high prescription drug costs for seniors by closing the "doughnut hole" in Medicare Part D. He also said reform would put more focus on prevention and wellness efforts and incentivizing quality of care rather than quantity.

"That's what health care reform will mean to folks on Medicare," he said.

The president also addressed a question from a woman concerned that current health care reform legislation under consideration would require Medicare recipients to decide how they want to die.

"Nobody's going to be forcing you to be making decisions on end of life care," the president said.

Instead, a provision in the House of Representatives' health care bill would provide for end of life care advice and counseling through Medicare.

The Health Plan: You will pay more for less. If you are old, you will be thrown under the bus. If you are a lawbreaking illegal alien, you just hit the jackpot. No more waiting for hours in an E.R. If you have good health care now, kiss it bye bye.

The POTUS says the government will not make health care choices. He obviously hasn't read the 1,012 page bill in the House. I haven't read all of it either, but I have it and I am reading it. I suggest everyone that reads this blog go to the House and download the bill. It is written in legal language, but it is still readable. Lawyers write the way they do so they can interpret the law later. Everyone reading this bill will interpret it the way they choose. Unfortunately the legal interpretations can put us in a big pickle and Mr. President on page 429 the interpretation could be legal euthanasia by federal bureaucrats without medical training. I have read a large portion of the bill and no where do I find that these health care advisors are medically trained. I only find reference to health care advisors as federal employees. My interpretations so far are that this is just more process to human life cleansing. Currently insurance companies deny care based on exclusions so patients die. Under this health plan patients must seek federal health counselors before doctor appointments. The federal employee then determines your exclusion. The costs of being insured actually go up for the economic working slave and health care goes down. The reality of this bill does not provide health care improvement, but with lowering doctor, nurse, and facility fees, without lowering the costs of education in these fields, which have increased, less and less will seek the professions in the healthcare field. More and more federal bureaucrats will be taking over healthcare. Ergo, less healthcare and more expense. Personally I am all for social medicine. I have lived in a country that has social medicine, the care is much better. The tax structure of this country can support social health, education, and welfare. The tax structure of this country allows no tax shelters. If your income is 30 million a year you pay 15 million in tax, because you couldn't spend 15 million in a year anyway. If your income is 20,000 a year, you pay only 2,000. All of their people are taken care of with education, health, and welfare. Their people are so well educated, they are coming to the US to take our jobs. Why? Because if they make a lot of money in their country they don't get the luxury and tax shelter they get here. Here they can keep their wealth and pay no tax. They go back to their country for any health care and educate their kids back there. More and more American youth are going to foreign countries to get degrees because they can't afford education here. This sums it up. This bill is about greed and keeping the wealthy fat and happy. This bill is not about health. And yes Mr. President you have sentenced me to death with euthanasia, along with anyone that needs extended nursing care or lives in a nursing home. You have solved the problem of nursing homes being understaffed. Just kill the residents so the proportion of staff and resident equal out. Soon everyone will understand how the Germans had to stand by as the Nazi steam rolled them into the holocaust. Soon my children will stand by and watch as I am put to sleep because I am a health issue and not worth the price of medicine to keep me alive. My interpretation, but people read the bill. Don't read the news reports. Read the bill!

Wrong Obama, the country becoming the power it once was depends on the reversal of Roosevelts "New Deal"

A P did a great article on the health-care reform bill that highlights all of the major changes, who it covers, even how its' going to be paid. A lot of you are making assumptions, which can be misleading to a lot of people who read and participate in the boards. Why don't you try informing yourself with facts, and presenting them with argument instead of rambling on with nonsense? Isn't that the whole point of reading an article and commenting on it?

nolalou - Isn't it you who is full of BS? Illegal immigrants, by definition, live below the radar screen. If people are here illegally and working illegaly, what makes you think they are paying taxes. If anything they buy cars, fail to register them, and do not carry insurance. How you can state with a straight face that people residing illegally in America are taxpayers and outstanding citizens is beyond the realm of reason. They are not registered anywhere and they aren't easy for the police to find when they live below the radar.

For example look at the FBI top ten, and see how many are illegals. 7 or 8 at last count.

Here is USA so I don't want to give you so much about other country , in my case Japan.

But I forget to tell you all, Japanese people have been paying own health cost to reduce to pay in situation,
they afford themselves like taxes. It depends on their income range, I think it is too high for low income people in Japan, but they have exception , basically. In spite of they can have exception condition, sometimes city workers don't know about this and try to collect money from them, it is wrong, it is I am talking about, other wise no problem with health care system in japan.

May be many USA people can not understand why have to donate money for health reform to do.
Because as like Japan, many countries have similar health care system, usually they pay insurance themselves,
so not really company paying for people, company only from paying system instead of employees.

And why donation any way?

I guess so many people, residents , even citizens don't get this idea, because they have outside experiences.

Hey SDS, lovely comments truly inspired. Could you please provide some links to the information that you have posted here because it mostly sounds like fear-mongering and propaganda. I would love to look over any health care reform, but as of yet there hasn't been any plan at all mentioned. Mostly people talk about how to pay for a new one. I truly love how you date yourself with your comments and attitude, but since you seem to want to join in with the whole era of technology please remember that the things you state can be easily verified with a search engine, and in doing so it's clear most of what you say is conjecture. You are a great mouth piece and a true example of the right wing, please don't ever lose that about yourself, and in the future back up your information with facts. Kthnxbye

Is Obama planning to fund his new-fangled, ill-advised, health care reform on the backs of seniors? After all, in his opinion seniors should be "disposable" and they don't really "deserve" good medical care in their latter years. They should just go away or die in his opinion. I suppose euthanasia doctors will have their hands full, as younger, able bodied citizens gets good health care and seniors are shunted into hospices to die with a free bag of pain pills in their hands. What a horrible scenario this will be and not at all far from the truth. Obama's plans for this country are scary to say the least!
