The state's GOP executive committee met for about three hours Monday. Twenty-two members supported the censure. Ten voted to call for his resignation and nine others voted against any reprimand.
In a statement, Sanford says he appreciates the party's position and will continue to work to earn back its trust, the Associated Press reported.
The governor has said repeatedly that he will serve his remaining 18 months in office.
Some members of the state's Republican party reportedly do not want Sanford to resign because they wish to compete for the governor's mansion in 2011 and the state's current lieutenant governor, Andre Bauer, might have an advantage in running for reelection as the incumbent governor.

If he gets her pregnant do you think she should have an abortion?
Nope.
The mistress and the child should move into Sanford's house, and he should raise the child the way ALL CHRISTIANS believe that children should be raised - by a mom AND a dad.
THOSE are conservative "family values", and he should live under them, or admit that he's a hypocrite.
I would DIE LAUGHING if it turned out he did knock her up, though I'm sure he would pay for the abortion himself before it ever became public.
Governor Sandford need to resign immediately or bbe impeached.
The republican majority government of South Carolina wants nothing to do with impeaching him.
As usual, their answer is: "Let's not act on it. We'll wait it out and see if it goes away."
Just like they want to do with health care and our nation's economic implosion.
(But they sure are ready to jump into a war with Iran over their elections, aren't they?!?!)
Where do live?
Pakistan's swat valley or Tehran?!?!
Sounds like their position on fixing America's health care and economic problems too: condemn them as "broken", but they don't propose any solutions to the problem(s).
