Obama "Deeply Troubled" By Iran Situation

5087842President Obama this afternoon said that while he is "deeply troubled" by the violence in Iran, the United States "respect[s] Iranian sovereignty" and believes Iranians should be left to determine their own leadership.

He also said, however, that any investigation into Iran's disputed election, which has led to protests and violence, must come without bloodshed. Mr. Obama maintained that "the democratic process, free speech, the ability of people to peacefully dissent" are universal values that must be respected, reports CBS News White House correspondent Mark Knoller.

The president added that people are "rightfully troubled" by images of violence against peaceful protesters and that "it would be wrong to stay silent" about the protests.

To the people in Iran upset by the election results, Mr. Obama said "the world is watching and inspired by the participation."

The president said the situation did not change his intention to negotiate without precondition with the Iranian leader.

"I have always felt that, as odious as I feel some of President Ahmadinejad 's statements [are], as deep as the differences that exist between the United States and Iran on core issues, the use of tough hard headed diplomacy, diplomacy without illusions, is critical when it comes to pursuing a core set of national security interests," he said. "…We will continue to pursue a tough direct dialogue between our two countries."

Mr. Obama said he could not comment on voting fraud allegations, noting that the United States did not have observers watching the election first hand.

The president has been criticized by Republicans for not discussing the fallout from the reelection of incumbent President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, which critics say is illegitimate. He made the comments following a White House meeting with Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi.

Since Pres. Obama is "deeply troubled" by the Iranian dictatorship's crackdown, now would be a good time to strenghten sanctions against that regime and make certain that they understand our terms concerning nuclear enrichment, support of terror groups and threats against Israel. The tea party with the tyrant can be put on hold until his regime moves to conciliate us.

Obama doesn't know how to "not take action" out of this, which explains his "I hope things fix themselves" philosophy.

Actually I agree with Obama's approach so far. The GOP is playing with dynamite! Have they learned nothing of diplomacy after all this time?

Any grandstanding now could give the hardliners in Iran a great excuse to label the reformist camp as a stooge of the West. And worst case scenario, it could incite the crowds even more and risk the whole thing blowing up in their faces!

We must, in fact, ensure that our help is wanted, and that we don't end up doing more harm than good.

What cave have some of these politicians crawled out of? Damn, I don't care if they are Republicans or Democrats....each time I think I can't possibly hear of anything more assanine.....they prove me wrong once again!!!!

Congratulate the victor and move on. This election was not intended nor did it have a chance of changing anything. The Ayatolla runs the show, the Iranian President only serves at his behest, regardless of who he may be. Obama is simply conveying the fact that he is scared, confused, over-whelmed and has not a clue. He's wasting time thinking Iran will change, but fails to understand this isn't community organizing - this is the real world.

Hmmm...So you felt like the real world was being acknowledged when Bush appropriately refused to speak to Iran without preconditions (and so, so much was accomplished)? Maybe it wasn't as easy as co-managing your Dad's Major League Baseball team either.
