The U.S. will play host to the next G-20 summit of world leaders in Pittsburgh on September 24-25, White House spokesman Robert Gibbs announced Thursday.
Gibbs stated that Pittsburgh was chosen because President Obama believes that the location is ideal for emphasizing economic restoration.
"It's an area that has seen its share of economic woes in the past, but because of foresight and investment is now renewed, giving birth to renewed industries that are creating the jobs of the future." Gibbs said.
In addition, many world leaders will already be in New York for the U.N. General Assembly meeting.
Mr. Obama and the group are expected to discuss the economic progress in the past months and methods in affirming "a sound and sustainable recovery from the global economic and financial crisis."
In April, the group met in London, pledging $1.1 trillion to the International Monetary Fund in effort to stabilize the global economy. In addition, they created a supervising body charged with flagging problems within the global financial system. A photo from the summit is included above.
The Group of 20 was expanded from the Group of 8 in a November 2008 meeting in Washington over the economic crisis. For the first time, quickly developing nations such as China and India were invited to the table with the major world economic powers. The group agreed to introduce economic stimulus measures as well as new systems for handling future crises.
