Arabic Linguist Fired From Army For Being Openly Gay

3735521In spite of President Obama's declared stance against the "don't-ask-don't-tell" policy that keeps openly gay individuals out of the military, the U.S. Army on Thursday told Lt. Dan Choi he is being dismissed for publicly revealing his homosexuality.

Choi is not the first servicemember to be dismissed because of his sexuality under the Obama administration, but his dismissal stands out because of his noted skills. Choi is an infantry platoon leader in the New York National Guard who is fluent in Arabic. He graduated West Point and recently returned from Iraq.

As founding member of Knights Out, an organization for openly gay, lesbisan, bisexual, and transgender West Point alumni and their supporters, Choi advocates allowing openly gay people to serve in the military. He announced his own sexuality on MSNBC on March 19.

On the campaign trail, Mr. Obama specifically criticized the dismissal of openly gay servicemen who have special language skills. He also told the Advocate, a gay newsmagazine, that the don't-ask-don't-tell policy is a "counterproductive strategy."

"We're spending large sums of money to kick highly qualified gays or lesbians out of our military, some of whom possess specialties like Arab-language capabilities that we desperately need," he said in an interview with the magazine. "That doesn't make us more safe."

Since the don't-ask-don't-tell policy was implemented during the Clinton administration, around 12,500 servicemembers have been dismissed because of their sexuality.

The White House also recently came under fire from liberal bloggers who noted a change in the language addressing the issue on Whitehouse.gov. The site initially said Mr. Obama supported "repealing" don't-ask-don't-tell, but it later said the president supported "changing" the policy "in a sensible way." After taking heat on the matter, the White House changed the wording on Whitehouse.gov once again to say the president "supports repealing Don't Ask Don't Tell in a sensible way that strengthens our armed forces and our national security."

Defense Secretary Robert Gates has also been noncomittal about repealing the policy. While touring war colleges in April, Gates said he did not yet have a position on whether gay troops should be open about their sexuality.

Mr. Obama has also come under pressure from gay advocates to appoint an openly gay person to the Supreme Court.

Below is Choi's March 19 appearance on MSNBC:

Iam a sergeant in the us army that deployed with Lt choi. Iam a heterosexual man,Lt Choi is an outstanding leader, leaders are born not made, you people can take your nasty and disrespectful comments and swallow them down the wind pipe.Lt choi just like me risked his life from aug 2006 nov 2007 operation iraqi freedom not for the money, but to represent the USA in a third world country, and to prove to the world that we are not animals like they assume we are.I Know the Lt for three years and i just found out his sexual preference only because i was watching the news,he is very moral and more professional than he you wont be able to find.He will loose nothing being separated from the army.I have noted that the army would rather keep alcoholics,ex-convicts and drug abusers. Just ask yourself, who would you trust a person that is gay and professional good at what he does or a drug abuser in a combat zone? Go ahead seperate him and all the soldiers that are worth a gold mine, then realize on your own that the armed forces are no longer effective,it is happening now!recruitting and retention is down.all we have left are jail birds and junkies give your self a round of applause and pat your self on the back.

What's a coal string--anything like a coatstring?

Yes it IS "gay"of him to say he is gay (lol). But why should he be dismissed? It makes no sense and it is a shame. I'm sure there are many who are not even completely aware of their sexuality when signing up at that young age. Especially when society does everything it can to brainwash you straight.

He knew how hard it was to get in and he knew the current laws. He is playing on the liberals coal strings.
It was gay of him to attempt this game and he lost.

Obama was going to fix this, was this not the first thing he was going to sign when elected?

Are you saying he lied to the homosexes?

What a disgrace. In this day and age to destroy someone's life and career because they are homosexual is abhorrent. Throw in the fact that he speaks Arabic fluently and that's doubly insane. And how does homosexuality make him "morally or professionally derelict" or "negatively effect the good order and discipline" of the National Guard. The government is pathetic. And as long as homosexuals are treated as second class citizens, they are under absolutely no obligation to pay the same taxes or obey the same laws that that the first class citizens, heterosexuals, do. It's high time Gay Americans start fighting back, with violence if necessary.

Why do all of these cases seem to start with a deliberate stealthy entry into the military, if not dishonest, in order to later stage a grandstand play?

How is it dishonest? The military permits gays. It just doesn't permit them to talk about it.

Quite an elaborate scheme, imho. Do you know how hard it is to get into West Point? You think he staged the whole thing as a spectacle? LMAO!

Oh, and putting his life on the line in Iraq was certainly part of his "scheme".... Get real!

Define "openly".......was he "openly" gay when he applied to West Point, openly" gay when he reported to his first commanding officer, or did he wait until he was able to say he successfully completed a tour in Iaq in order to get more press attention? Why do all of these cases seem to start with a deliberate stealthy entry into the military, if not dishonest, in order to later stage a grandstand play? Why not instead start with honest protest and develop grass-roots support for change - unless you're afraid there is no grass-roots support for change.

iam4lies....yes he made a calculated move. As did those who refused to leave lunch counters in the south simply because they were black. Sometimes a caluclated move is made with the greater good in mind. This man has more courage than you and I and most people posting here combined. For you to sit in your cozy home and throw bigotted insults takes not an ounce of courage, but it takes a great deal of gall and ignorance!

the_sir_mr .............FIRST OF ALL, homosexuality is in now shape or form a sickness. It can be debated wether or not bigorty is.....something you obviously suffer from. Second of all, you people have been extremely vocal about your views on gays for years. Fortunatley the nation is moving on and people are starting to loose their homophobia. Thirdly, gay Americans have absolutely no desire to control you or anyone else. They simply wish to have the same legal protections you enjoy.

You have a very strange idea of "sick" when you dehumanize an entire group of people.
