Burton On Washington Unplugged: After Gregg, White House "Moving Forward"

(CBS)
On CBSNews.com's "Washington Unplugged" Web show this week, Deputy White House Press Secretary Bill Burton told guest moderator John Dickerson that the White House is "moving forward" following the surprise decision by Republican Sen. Judd Gregg from consideration to become commerce secretary.

Gregg, a self-proclaimed fiscal conservative, said he made the decision because of ideological differences with the administration, which has pushed hard in recent weeks for the now $790 billion dollar economic stimulus plan.

"At the end of the day, it's true that Sen. Gregg had some misgivings about the position and decided that he didn't want to serve, and we're moving forward," said Burton. "We're going to have a strong nominee who is going to fill that role."

Burton also said the president had not become pessimistic about the prospects for bipartisanship in Washington despite Gregg's decision and scant Republican support for the stimulus package.

"He is still the eternal optimist," Burton said, echoing the president's own comments. "He really feels like we are going to make a lot of progress as it relates to working with Republicans and with Democrats in order to make progress on the things that are important to the American people."

Burton added that making Washington more bipartisan is "a long process."

Dickerson asked if the president was learning the limits of bipartisanship in light of the ideological differences between Republicans and Democrats.

"There are philosophical differences," he said. "There's no doubt about that. And that's why we had elections and that's why – you know this last election what the American people said very clearly was that they wanted President Obama to lead this country."

I think that this is the beginning, not the end of a process."

Burton also noted that there was some Republican support for the economic plan, and said that President Obama expected Republican support on other initiatives in the future, including health care and energy policy reform.

Below, watch Burton on this week's episode of "Washington Unplugged." The 15-minute episode also includes a journalists roundtable, an update on the plane crash in Buffalo, and an interview with author Thomas Ricks, author of "The Gamble: General David Petraeus and the American Military Adventure in Iraq 2006-2008."

Why get on a dead horse?

This administration won''t get anywhere''s because of BOTH political parties in Congress killing the country. The horse is dead, there is nothing to ride but the drag to the pit. Oh yeah everyone loves to blame Bush. That guy was so stupid he could have been tricked to start a war against Mars. Our checks and balances such as the Supreme Court to stop spending that exceeded what we could ever pay back, or Congress could have refused to fund the wars of waste. Nobody ever stepped to the plate. Except Democrats in Congress to get banks to finance illegal immigrants with ARM Loans (of which 5 million went into foreclosure), free healthcare, more rights than citizens, yanked the teeth from the Border Patrol.

Taking a job in the last Administration of the United States is suicide. Both political parties killed the country, we all know it. We all failed to keep Congress and their credit card in check and we are failing today to hold banks accountable for ARM loans that they know would never be repayed.

Your good friends the republicans (thugs) are the party of negativity, ruination, small minded, petty hypocrites! They followed bush blindly saying yes to all of the bad and now failed policies and now all they can do is to act (like you) like spoiled children! President Obama is better off without Gregg, this country would be better off without the rethug party as it currently is!

The Repulicans doubled the national debt in 8 years, and after inheriting annual budget surpluses, increased the annual budget deficit to over a trillion dollars. How do they get credit for being "fiscally conservative"? Bizare that the Geriatric Obstructionist Party can spend a trillion dollars in Iraq and that''''s fiscal conservatism, yet if Dems spend the same amount here in America it''''s considered a "waste". Unreal.

Newspapers and TV stations are owned by big business...

Every time that President Obama reachs out for friendship and a request to work together, the republicans bite his hands and the press reports that it''s Obama''s failure... well it''s not!

It''s time for the press to report fairly and put their opinions in editorials.

President Obama has had a very successful 3 weeks in office! Lets give hime the credit due.

President Obama and Democrats... get over it.... the republican repudaters are NEVER going to help you. To try to work with them will only waste your valuable time.

Sneaky Gregg is an example of those whom will waste your time hopeing you''ll fail. I''m sure he thought he''d pulled something cute but in reality he just showed his true colors.

President Obama is a man of integrity and compassion. While he''s one of the most intelligent Presidents we''ve ever had and he''s right about most things as far as I see it, he may be very wrong about our Republican friends. Another Democratic President with high ideals, Woodrow Wilson discovered the hard way that, in his words, "Republicans are good for one thing---fighting!"

An intelligent person can do the same but is not limited to what others already thought of...in short, an intelligent person can recognize and create new paradigms if need be to solve a problem--but a smart person is limited to what they have been taught--they can never envision that which has not already been discovered by someone else.

Yes, "common sense". It is truly amazing how many people are totally lacking in that department.

And to me, if you don''t have that, you may as well have nothing.:)

Obama is and has a lot of SMART people working for and around him. Unfortunately, smart and intelligent are too different things.

There is an obvious lack of intelligent people around Obama and he may himself not be intelligent.

The difference: A smart person can memorize and learn how to manipulate any existing paradigm or problem to their advantage.

An intelligent person can do the same but is not limited to what others already thought of...in short, an intelligent person can recognize and create new paradigms if need be to solve a problem--but a smart person is limited to what they have been taught--they can never envision that which has not already been discovered by someone else.
