No Disrespect In Calling the President "Mister"

It happens with each new president and occasionally in between: Some people take offense at the long-standing practice of CBS News and other broadcast journalists referring to the President with the honorific "Mister."

(AP)
Some misinterpret it as a sign of disrespect. Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, entirely the opposite is true.

CBS News policy dictates that we never refer to the president by just his last name. We can do that for everyone else and even other world leaders – but not the American president and his predecessors. It's meant as a sign of respect.

For example, here's part of a radio report I filed this morning:

It's a media blitz for the stimulus plan by Pres. Obama this afternoon – as he sits for separate interviews with each of five network news anchors. He's still trying to rally some republican support for the measure. But Mr. Obama remains confident he will get the bill he wants to his desk in the next couple of weeks.

On first reference, it's "President Obama." But on second reference, it's "Mr. Obama."

The reason for this is simple. It would be very bad and tiresome writing to repeatedly refer to "Pres. Obama" in sentence after sentence. So on second reference, he'll be "Mr. Obama" or just "the president."

And it bears repeating. In no way is this meant to diminish his standing or the respect which he is due.

And it's not just an issue when a Democrat is President. The issue comes up during Republican Administrations as well. (For proof, check out the web piece I wrote about this very same issue in December 2006.)

It is never appropriate to call any US president Mister. You don''t call a doctor Mister, you don''t call a general Mister ( at least not more than once). President is a title that replaces mister. The title lasts for life. CBS and others may not intend disrespect, but disrespect is what they show.

raflin0010,
I love your post! Right on! I actually only read the "comments" to get a laugh out of the whining conservatives. (Which, of course, includes the Texans, aka "the Duh''s)

Obungler will never be called president by this American simply because he''''s never proven up his qualification under the Constitution to be so.

You''re no "American." You a "Texan." It''s no wonder that Texas gets such a bad rap with the likes of you. By the way, you can whine and harp that President Obama is not a citizen, not qualified to be President, etc., etc. but like it or not, he IS. Live in your own little fantasy world as you so choose. Many, many of us had to put up with 8 longggggg years of Bush. Act like man and put up with Obama and stop your girlish whining...

Having lived in 23 other countries in my long life, I would like to attest to the extremely high quality of CBS and other American news outlets. Americans not only have the opportunity to access high quality, unbiased news sources, we have more news subjects available than most countries.

I have watched the maturation of American news coverage from the days of Edward R. Murrow, John Cameron Swayze, Douglas Edwards and Mike Reynolds and assure you that the quality, content and quantity of American news are unequaled anywhere in the world.

However, spot-checking through the archives, I find President Bush was ALWAYS referred to as President Bush or Mr. Bush, never as "Bush" on the CBS website. So I think those who have accused CBS of disrespect towards then-President Bush are clearly in the wrong.

Dear me. We CERTAINLY seem to have some bitter and anger-filled conservatives here today. For those who accuse CBS News of being a "communistic, liberal news organization," perhaps you might ask youselves why you come here in the first place? Perhaps you should consider getting your news ONLY from FoxNews (which is of course COMPLETELY "fair and balanced" with only commentators who do not take sides, for example O''Reilly, Coulter, Hannity, etc.....

I guess this doesn''t apply to the former President Bush, who is not called "Mr." in this quote from Jan. 22 2009:
"Earlier, in signing a series of executive orders in the Oval Office that included closing Guantanamo, Mr. Obama said his administration would not "continue with a false choice between our safety and our ideals," a slap at policies pursued by Bush."
