CBS News has confirmed that President-elect Barack Obama has invited US Airways Capt. Chesley B. "Sully" Sullenberger – the pilot of the airliner that crashed into the Hudson River last week – and his family and his crew to attend the inauguration tomorrow.

A transition official tells CBS News that the details are still being worked out.

On Saturday, Sullenberger's wife told The Early Show that it was likely they would make the trip.

"Our daughters would love to go see the Jonas Brothers," Lorrie Sullenberger said. "So we're thinking about (going to D.C. for the inaugural events). I would love to go. It's in the works, I believe." (Read more)

The Sullenbergers are exemplary citizens in many ways, not the least of which is their raising of guide dogs for blind people. But if PETA has their way, people like them and the blind people who benefit from their generosity will be forced to give up this wonderful program.
On January 10, Daphna Nachminovitch, PETA''s vice president for Cruelty Investigations, had an interview posted on the LA Times blog, "LA Unleashed" decrying the existence of guide dogs.

Her reasoning reflects a wealth of misinformation; she says that guide dogs are in harness almost 24 hours a day, that they aren''t given love and affection, that schools force people to return retired guides, that the schools'' should use shelter dogs instead of having their own breeding programs and she infers that blind people living alone are incapable of noticing health issues. Her solution is to have sighted people help blind people. It''s important to guide dog handlers and the people who volunteer to raise puppies that these falsehoods be countered.
Please help by speaking out against PETA''s misinformed and hurtful stand.

I much prefer the old Bush heroes to these new Obama ones. For instance, the crew who decided to land their crippled plane in enemy territory instead of ditching it in the sea, giving the Chinese a chance to reverse engineer our top secret military equipment. Or maybe the Air Force One crew, who bravely flew Commander Guy from one hiding place to another on 9/11, so he wouldn''t be forced to face the nation. And who can forget the myriad of apologists, in both the Republican Party and the media, who made so many excuses for the Decider as he dropped one ball after another!

These are my kinds of heroes!

Why just the Captain? Why not the First Officer and the Flight Attendants? After all it was a team effort to get everyone out safely....
