Emanuel To Resign House Seat On Friday
Incoming White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel will resign his House seat on Friday, the Associated Press reports. After Emanuel officially vacates his 5th congressional district seat in Illinois, a special election will be called to replace him.
Embattled Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, who was Emanuel's predecessor in the House, will have just five days to set the date for the special election after Emanuel resigns.
The special election must then take place within 115 days.
The AP highlights Cook County Commissioner Mike Quigley and Illinois state Reps. John Fritchey and Nancy Kaszak, as Chicago politicians who have expressed interest in the House seat.
