Perry camp denies leaking explosive Cain story

Rick Perry's presidential campaign says it is "absolutely not" responsible for leaking the fact that Herman Cain was accused of sexual misconduct while head of the National Restaurant Association to Politico, which broke the explosive story Sunday night.

"That is false, patently untrue, no one at this campaign was involved in this story," said Perry communications director Ray Sullivan.

Sullivan then suggested to CBS News and National Journal reporter Rebecca Kaplan that Mitt Romney's campaign is behind the allegations.

"I wouldn't put it past them," he said, stating that blog posts have noted that Cain's successor at the Restaurant Association "is a big Romney donor."

"There are much closer connections between the Restaurant Association, Cain and the Romney camp than there are with us," he said.

Federal Election Commission records show that Steven C. Anderson, who succeeded Cain as the Restaurant Association's CEO, gave $1,000 to Romney's campaign on July 14, Kaplan reports. He also gave a total of $1,000 to Cain in two $500 installments during Cain's 2003-2004 Senate campaign.

In response to Sullivan's comments, Romney spokesperson Andrea Saul offered two words to CBS News: "Not true." She declined to elaborate.

Lawyer: Cain accusers should be allowed to talk

Late Wednesday afternoon, Forbes ran a story suggesting that Cain's camp is blaming former Cain staffer Curt Anderson for the story. The story quotes Cain saying he briefed Anderson, then a campaign consultant, telling him about "one set of charges" from his time at the Restaurant Association.

"Those charges were baseless, but I thought he needed to know about them," Cain told Forbes. "I don't recall anyone else being in the room when I told him."

In a tele-town hall Wednesday night, Cain said, " We' ve been able to trace [the leak] back to the Perry campaign that stirred this up in order to discredit me, my campaign, and slow us down."

And on Fox News Wednesday afternoon, Cain chief of staff Mark Block said the Cain campaign was "absolutely" charging the Perry campaign with "stirring this up."

"And quite frankly, this is one of the actions in America that is the reason people don't get involved in politics. The actions of the Perry campaign are despicable," Block said. "Rick Perry and his campaign owe Herman Cain and his family an apology."

Cain camp: Perry team "absolutely" behind leak

Anderson, now an adviser to Perry, denied involvement in leaking the story, telling CBS News/National Journal: "I've known Herman Cain for about 7 years. I was one of several consultants on his Senate race in 2004 and was proud to help him. I'd never heard any of these allegations until I read them in Politico, nor does anything I read in the press change my opinion that Herman is an upstanding man and a gentleman. I have great respect for Herman and his character and I would never speak ill of him, on the record or off the record. That's true today and it's not going to change."

The accusation came as the Associated Press reports that a third woman is alleging improper sexual conduct by Cain. According to the AP, the woman said he "made sexually suggestive remarks or gestures" and invited her privately to his corporate apartment. Cain's campaign denied the "baseless allegations."

They also follow comments by political consultant Chris Wilson, who worked for the NRA during Cain's tenure and said that he witnessed some of Cain's behavior. If Cain's accuser is allowed to speak, Wilson said, it will be damaging for the candidate.

"I was the pollster at the National Restaurant Association when Herman Cain was head of it and I was around a couple of times when this happened and anyone who was involved with the NRA at the time, knew that this was gonna come up," he said to Oklahoma radio station KTOK. "If she talks about it, I think it'll be the end of his campaign."

Perry just needs to keep his mouth shut and learn how to debate if he wants to make it a contest in the primaries! Takes him 2 hours to watch 60 Minutes.

Cain is just the October flavor of the month so he was the temporary leader of the cadre of clowns that lead the Republicon Party. It must be hard for these Top 1% Republicons to say they love America while they hate at least 75% of the people who live here.

I think most people see the truth now and join with the majority that hate everything the Republicons stand for (which is not what they claim to stand for).

Wow. Lead the Republicans in a poll for a few weeks and suddenly you're Satan. Of course Romney had a hand in this. Who else had so much to gain? So we should vote for a RINO now because the press and the Dems like him? No way.

Romney has said he is a Tea Bagger and obviously is owned and run by the Top 1% corporate masters of America. That is why Wall Street and the Top 1% loves their next possible puppet. Of course they are all Republicons who have been wrong about everything for more than 30 years since Reagan.

Cain has already addressed this head on you fools. The only way to address it more directly is to name the women, which is not allowed and would be worse than any alleged harassment.

Cain has already been too accommodating to this trash "journalism". Of course once this was trotted out, it didn't matter what he said - too much and we get the current situation, too little and there would be constant cries that he is hiding something.

Personally, I just sent in my first contribution of the election cycle TO THE HERMAN CAIN CAMPAIGN. I'm sick and tired of baseless and insignificant mud slinging. I want a straight up debate of the issues including the general election.

Accusations of sexual harassment that were settled years ago and resulted in no legal charges is not the issue; the economy is. Politicians, the media, and voters should be discussing or obsessing about an economy that continues to be recessed three years after the initial collapse in Fall 2008, and a president who seems clueless and incompetent and can only offer a continuation of huge deficit spending and increased taxes as a solution, when these very policies are what caused the economic crisis in the first place. Let's keep our priorities straight and not be distracted by sideshows.

Oh, come on now, Ricardo! You may have a 'love affair" with Mexicans but we all know how you good ole boys feel about "blackies"! We know you're thinking "It's bad enough with Obama in there and he's only half black" but Cain, "No way"! He's like a black, not nearly as good looking, version of Bill Clinton, sounds like! So why not eliminate the competition with a few "baseless" rumours! If you do succeed in getting Cain out and bolstering your own ratings again (highly unlikely) Just remember, Ricardo, if you are "top dog", they are gonna put you thru the wringer too! I'd love to see what they'd find! I bet there's plenty!

I don't care about the allegations against Cain, women make stuff up to cash in. Just ask the Duke Lacrosse team.

But I'm beginning to have doubts about Cain's political instincts and campaign team. Blaming Perry? He'd better have pictures or a taped phone call before recklessly charging through his fellow candidates.

If he was smart, he'd just **** for a week and let the media move on to their next scandal-du-jour.

Bill Clinton was groping unwilling partners in the Oval Office and preying on 22 year old interns. Nobody cares about he-said/she-said off color jokes and sexual innnuendo.

Yea wait for it. Curt Anderson couldn't remember either he just heard about it when the story broke. Then in the Washington Post the first article SCRUBBED this: The lawyer couldn't remember this case. He wasn't sure who it was about. He wasn't sure if he went to the NRA offices or if this was done by fax. He doesn't have the files or agreement any longer. Doesn't sound like a case that was all that important.

Funny does anyone remember Larry Sinclair? He is the man who claimed to have a homosexual relationship with Obama. Remember how the media pounded on that one? It was brutal.
