President Obama congratulated the people of Libya Sunday for the nation's "historic declaration of liberation," and called on its temporary governing body to "turn its attention to the political transition ahead."

In a statement, Mr. Obama heralded a "new era of promise" for the nation after the fall of dictator Muammar Qaddafi, who was killed in an ambush in Sirte last week.

"On behalf of the American people, I congratulate the people of Libya on today's historic declaration of liberation," he said. "After four decades of brutal dictatorship and eight months of deadly conflict, the Libyan people can now celebrate their freedom and the beginning of a new era of promise."

The nation's interim leaders formally declared the Libyan liberation Sunday at a ceremony in Libya's eastern city of Benghazi.

At the celebration, which was attended by thousands of Libyans, interim leader Mustafa Abdul-Jalil celebrated the victory and pledged to uphold Sharia law in the nation.

"This revolution was looked after by God to achieve victory," he said.

Mr. Obama, in his statement, urged Libya's Transitional National Council (TNC) to be mindful of human rights in rebuilding Libya's governing body.

"We look forward to working with the TNC and an empowered transitional government as they prepare for the country's first free and fair elections," Mr. Obama said in the statement. "The Libyan authorities should also continue living up to their commitments to respect human rights, begin a national reconciliation process, secure weapons and dangerous materials, and bring together armed groups under a unified civilian leadership."

He pledged to work with its international partners to "help advance a stable, democratic transition" in Libya.

The fool should stick to golf becasue he surely can not govern...now we have a Sharia Law based government in Libya - great! And, no doubt the world expects America to pay the bulk of what it is going to take to rebuild the mess they have there -great. What an accomlishment. Kind of like a triple bogey on the easiest hole on the course.....

Please put aside party politics and ideologies and lets look at the whole picture. The economy is bad and its not because of Obama, the democrats and the republicans...its just bad. Stop pointing fingers and fix it. The president's foreign policy is about outright murder. Libya was suppose to be a mission for humanitarian efforts not killing a leader. The president is not doing a good job. He is playing politics with the lives of millions. Congress and the senate are also playing politics on both sides. America is going down hill and fast. Our leaders do not want to fix it. They rather play politics. We the people need to take charge and fix things by electing these people out of office. We need to organize and make change.

jfk1963executiveorder says:
I challenge 60 Minutes, 48 hours, the early show and CBS evening news to do one thing: relate JFK's Executive Order 11-110 to the debt America is in right now. I CAN BET ANY AMOUNT OF MONEY THAT NOT ONE JOURNALIST AT CBS NEWS HAS THE COURAGE TO QUESTION OBAMA OF JOHN F. KENNEDY'S LONG-SILENCED EXECUTIVE ORDER 11-110 AND RELATE THAT TO THE ENORMOUS AMOUNT OF MONEY THE GOVERNMENT NOW OWES THE SO-CALLED FEDERAL RESERVE BANK. If CBS counts itself honestly among the top tier of journalists in the world, then you will have no hesitation in examining the fact that IF Executive Order was passed in 1963 like JFK had intended, then the United States would not have the economic problems it does right now. It is THAT simple. No need to complicate matters with esoteric discussions of monetary policy. The ONLY way out of America's economic woes is to repeal the Federal Reserve Act of 1913 and initiate Executive Order 11-110.

I also ask CBS to run a feature story on the little-discussed meeting in 1910 on Jekyll Island, Georgia. It is widely known that this meeting was conducted in absolute secrecy. Come on, you're a journalist. Ask youself this question: if the bankers who attended that meeting in 1910 had nothing to hide, then WHY the secrecy? I'll tell you why - because if the American people discovered that the Federal Reserve Act of 1913 was in actual fact conjured up by Warburg, Rockefeller, Rothschild and Morgan (who at the time represented some 25% of the world's wealth), it would not have been passed at all. Of course, it helps having JD Rockefeller's father-in-law, Senator Nelson Aldrich, in charge of pushing the bill through Congress! What's even more ironic is that the same men behind the founding of the Federal Reserve Bank were responsible for instigating the Panic of 1907 which precipitated the government's apparent need for a Federal Reserve to even be started!

Come on CBS, lift the lid. Do I have to do your research for you?

The Federal Reserve is about as Federal as Federal Express. The sooner the American public realize this, the better. Since the Federal Reserve Act of 1913, there have been more wars and economic failures than at any time in recorded human history. You do the math. Come on.

The ONLY presidential candidate espousing the economic benefits of ending the Federal Reserve is being completely IGNORED by CBS News. Why is that? If you were doing an investigative report on the quality of a certain product, and you realized that every single product was the SAME except for ONE product which stood apart, why wouldn't you analyse this product and find out why THAT product was different from the rest?

The mere thought of Herman Cain becoming president is absurd. Why? Because the Federal Reserve Bank is directly responsible for America's economic collapse (and Cain was used to work for the Federal Reserve), so to put a Fed member in charge of running the country would be like putting a Fox in charge of guarding the hen-house.

In short, put on your big-boy pants CBS and give Ron Paul some proper air-time. If you truly are a patriotic center for journalistic integrity, examine Executive Order 11-110 and relate it to USA debt. You will quickly join the dots.

abnrgrcsmwithacib, if by 'liberated' you mean final and complete victory of Wall Street and corporate America over the people of this nation, then by all means, vote for the GOP. Frankly, I'm getting tired of telling conservatives "I told you so", not that it matters. Conservative never take responsibility for their actions words or voting habits. You just point the finger and blame everyone but yourselves when you screw things up.

Obama, and the rest of the western world should wake up to what is happening, do no bury your heads in the sand and pretend it does not exist.
Each time the west help a muslim nation, it is the christians and other religions within that nation that pays the price of persecution. not a single muslim nation has given other religions to freely practice/build/preach/convert etc.
LOOK at Iraq, Egypt, and now Lybia :
A recent statement by the new leaders of Libya.
"We as a Muslim nation have taken Islamic sharia (law) as the source of legislation, therefore any law that contradicts the principles of Islam is legally nullified," Jalil told the crowd.

The truth may hurt...but it is still the truth.
