Democrats change Senate rules to limit delay tactics as Republicans fume

A mushroom cloud

/ Associated Press

The Republicans hoping to unseat President Obama have been on the campaign trail for months. Democrats have now stopped trying to pretend they are not.

Just hours after Mr. Obama called out the Senate's top Republican for trying to derail his jobs plan, the chamber's top Democrat took surpise action to prevent Republicans from offering endless amendments aimed at embarrassing the president.

The Senate late Thursday approved a rule change -- known in Washington as "the nuclear option" -- that prevents the minority party from forcing votes on amendments to a bill that has already worked its way through the legislative process and is about to get a final tally.

Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell had planned to force such a vote on Mr. Obama's original $447 billion jobs proposal after Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and his Democrats had signaled changes to the White House plan to make it more to their liking and the president had said he was comfortable with their changes.

McConnell wanted to force Democrats to vote against the president's original plan, which could not pass the chamber because it contained some provisions unpopular with the president's own party. Democrats have stripped out provisions to limit the tax deductions for families earning more than $250,000 to attract both Republican and Democratic votes. Senate Democrats instead added a 5.6 percent tax on income over $1 million.

While the Senate's move, passed mostly along party lines in a 51-48 vote, is procedural and technical, it is in keeping with a more combative stance toward Republicans that the White House has taken in recent weeks.

McConnell was furious with Reid's maneuver, arguing that the Senate was designed to give more power to the minority party than the House of Representatives, where the party out of power has little ability to block legislation backed by a simple majority. He said the minority party is "out of business." Reid's plan could backfire on Democrats if Republicans seize control of the Senate in next year's elections.

Earlier in the day, Mr. Obama called a press conference "to make the best arguments and mobilize the American people" to back his jobs package. An unmodified version of his plan has almost no chance of passage in the House of Representatives or the Senate.

The president called out House Speaker John Boehner and his Senate counterpart by name, noting that McConnell has said "his number-one goal was to beat me -- not put Americans back to work, not grow the economy, not help small businesses expand, but to defeat me. And he's been saying that now for a couple of years."

"I've got to go out and enlist the American people to see if maybe he'll listen to them if he's not listening to me," Mr. Obama said.

Mr. Obama discusses his campaign plans in an exchange with CBS senior White House correspondent Bill Plante:

Hey, Corbett, He's President Obama, not Mr. Obama! Gee, are you a Repug by any chance!? I like the way you are down-grading his job title before the elections even happen! Until he concedes the race, he is President Obama to you! You are being disrespectful by not calling him "President"! And, as a democrat, I take offense!

That may be how CNN wants to report it.......

......the truth is, The Democrats want to be dictators, and compromise on NOTHING!

Harry Reid is an obstructionist, who wouldn't allow a vote on Obama's jobs bill, because his own Dems wouldn't vote for it. So, he behaves like a dictator, and tries to run rough shod over both parties.

This is what is happening to America........dictatorship at the hands of the welfare party.

Let's see. McConnell wanted to vote on the bill because the bill was full of holes. Obama demanded a vote, which the republicans were willing to do. Then Reid, who saw how lame the bill was halted the process and re-wrote it. The republicans want to debate the revision and now Reid pushes through a change that basically takes out the voice of the minority. In 2007 Reid forced an all nighter to push an immediate withdrawal of troops from Iraq, even after his fellow democrats told him his withdrawal plans would leave those still in Iraq in harm's way. Now the little dictator is changing the rules so that no opposition can be voiced. It seems he wants to run the country from the Hill without being elected to the Oval Office.

Where is the information that the Gop wanted to vote on Obama's jobs bill, but the Dems didn't because up to 17 of their own members didn't support Obama's bill. Where is the truth.

FINALLY.!!

The Democrats have managed to get some backbone and are telling Blackmailer Boehner where he can put it.

Too bad they didn't find it sooner.

We might not be in this mess.

Well it's about time. McConnell seems happy to see millions of Americans remain jobless just to try and embarrass the president. He's let the Tea Party run the agenda of this country. But I will never forget how before we ever heard of the Tea Party he stated that his main goal was to get rid of this president. And he's stuck to that goal. The country can go down the drain in order for him to reach it. There was a time when the Republicans and the Democrats could negotiate with each other, but not anymore. I don't even recognize the current Republican party. They have become so extreme I don't know how they'll move back to rational conservatism.

McCain and his dirty lot of Republicants planned the Libyan uprise. They sold crowd control weapons to Qaddafi two years ago. McCain praised Qaddafi's "wisdom". Get it right.

The House of Reps is Republican controlled. How can McConnell reason that the Senate was made to balance House of Rep control? Republicans have officially been overthrown. I am very pleased that we can resume non-destructive policy now.

Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell has said that his main goal is to beat Obama. His main goal then is not what's best for this country. McConnell and John Boehner and the republican party are hurting everyone in the country, except for the ultra-rich corporate interests, by starting 13 months before the next election to run a smear campaign against the President and make it look like it is his fault that things don't get better for the rest of us. It's dirty politics and we the people should be smart enough to see what boehner and the republicans are doing. It is very bad for everyone except for the ultra-rich corporate interests. Goldman Sachs is one of boehner's main financial contributors. Golman Sachs is one of the main corporations responsible for the criminal "mortgage fraud" that cost us all
a lot of money.
