Poll: Most think U.S. on wrong track as fears about economy grow

Chart - Direction of the country CBS
CBS News Poll analysis by the CBS News Polling Unit: Sarah Dutton, Jennifer De Pinto, Fred Backus and Anthony Salvanto

Nearly three out of four Americans think the country is on the wrong track, the highest percentage since President Obama took office almost three years ago, a new CBS News/New York Times poll released Friday showed.

Just 23 percent think the country is currently headed in the right direction, compared to the 72 percent who think it is on the wrong track.

And more than half -- 53 percent -- think the country is either headed into or already experiencing another recession. About 39 percent say they it is not.

Asked to characterize the state of the U.S. economy, 39 percent of Americans say the economy is fairly bad, and another 47 percent say the economy is very bad - the highest percentage since April 2009.

Just 13 percent say the economy is fairly good and a mere one percent say it is very good.

And the percentage of respondents who think the economy is getting better is just 12 percent, nearly as low as the eight percent who thought it was getting better shortly after Mr. Obama took office. Perhaps more significantly, just three months ago 20 percent of respondents thought the economy was getting better. Forty-three percent think the economy is getting worse, and another 44 percent think it is staying about the same.

As it has since 2008, the economy and jobs remains the most important problem facing the country today according to the public. Now, 59 percent of Americans choose it, placing it far ahead of the budget deficit, the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and partisan politics.

While the country struggles with the unemployment rate at just over 9 percent, concern about job loss have also increased. More than six in 10 Americans are at least somewhat concerned that they or someone else in their household will lose their job and be looking for work within the next twelve months, including 38 percent who are very concerned - an increase of seven percentage points since June.

Most Americans do not see relief any time soon. A majority of 58 percent think unemployment will remain high for at least two more years, with 27 percent say it will be high for one year and just 9 percent predicting unemployment lowering significantly within the next six months.

Feelings about the economy have soured Americans views of all their elected leaders. Views of Mr. Obama have dropped, with his approval rating slipping to 43 percent -- his lowest so far in CBS News polls. His disapproval rating has reached an all-time high in this poll of 50 percent.

But at the same time, approval of Congress also now matches its all-time low -- just 12 percent of Americans approve of the job Congress is doing - the same as the lowest percentage recorded in this poll, reached in October 2008, right before the November elections. In addition, Americans disapprove of both parties in Congress with 72 percent disapproving of the job Republicans in Congress are doing, and 63 percent disapproving of the Democrats in Congress.

However, most Americans remain optimistic about America's long-term economic prospects. 64 percent of Americans think the current economic downturn will be temporary; just three in 10 think it is a sign of permanent economic decline. This is a more positive outlook than in June, but more negative than a year ago.

This poll was conducted among a random sample of 1,452 adults nationwide, interviewed by telephone September 10-15, 2011. The error due to sampling for results based on the entire sample could be plus or minus three percentage points. The error for subgroups is higher. An oversample of Republicans was also conducted for this poll, for a total of 781 interviews among this group. The results were then weighted in proportion to the average party distributions in previous 2011 CBS News and CBS News/New York Times Polls and in the random sample in this poll. The margin of error for Republicans is plus or minus four percentage points.

America has been on the right track, its Congress that's on the wrong track. Speaker of the House needs to be a non-partisan person who can fairly referee between the two houses.

The current speaker should be arrested for treason and hung on the White House lawn. What he has done and is still doing is unconstitutional, absolutist and obstructionist. That is why we got rid of the British in the first place over 200 years ago.
You don't get it!! How is the president supposed to get anything done when Congress blocks him at every step. It's Congress that needs replaced, not the President.

Congress does not live in the real world. They should all be paid minimum wage and living in public housing for their entire term; no fancy limo's and restaurants, no 5 week vacations, just work, like the rest of the country. You live in the trenches with the remaining 100+ million Americans on low and fixed incomes. Only then will you be able to understand what this country needs. These people forget that they work for us, not the other way around.

And taxes should be fair and equal for all, if you earn 10 billion, you pay 1 billion, if you earn 100,000 you pay 10,000. The party system should be abolished, as it serves no useful purpose other than promoting bigotry and infighting.
e wrong track.

"3 in 4 think America on the wrong track", but what track is that? I think the right wing is dragging our country to ruin so I guess I'm one of that statistic, but I bet that opinion isn't the one that many expect.

It's time for our government (My apologies for assigning responsibility) to start addressing problems with real solutions instead of quickly throwing taxpayers money at them. Why don't we tax specific imported goods to the point that it would no longer be profitable to manufacture and ship them here to the U.S. Companies would move here from outside the U.S. to be profitable again and POOF! Jobs would be created. For those that say "It's not that easy" you're right, It's not, and that's why the government continues to throw money at problems without coming up with hard solutions like this. We can't afford to continue on this path. Continually throwing taxpayers' money at complicated issues without addressing the cause and correcting the deficiencies is just irresponsible.

Why do they ask half the question? Why not poll why do you think the country is on the wrong track or what part of the jobs plan are you against or do you think tax cuts and deregulation create jobs or whats the best way to overhaul the tax code or do you think money should be removed from politics or any question that gets at the heart of the debate.

The direction is wrong, it is delay, deny, obstruct and lie to keep our President from getting any progress that might cost the GOP's rich onwers even one cent. Shame, we were once a great nation, now Canada might have to take a few states after the GOP finishes the final destruction of our freedaom and the economy.

Sincerely, there is not an honest politician in the house... and that includes Obama. That said, if you can excuse the outlandish spending that has made NO progress, the homeless, jobless, and starving in this country that is out of control, the sick without treatment and the endorsement of illegal aliens: then you deserve this president! There is NO defense for this actions that will satisfy this population. He has blatently helped the rich, sacrificed the working man, and made EVERY TAX PAYING AMERICAN a VICTIM! This president has gotten NOTHING done since the beginning when he WAS approved by MOST! He can not blame anyone or any group or any nation! You can not blame the failed stimulus on the GOP! You can not blame his endorsement of the Illegal Aliens in Arizona on the LEFT RIGHT SOUTH NORTH or ANYONE...not even the Teaparty...there is nobody to blame for his ridiculous spending, outlandish policies, and unworkable ideas than HIM! HE NEEDS TO GO! and he will...come 2012!

Regarding Canada, they revamped their system in the 90's. Their corporate tax rate is 16%. And you might want to note that many democrats aren't on board with barry's race to destroy this country. You people are so blind it's sad.

yo billiejo,i saw a tv program where the military was training for civil unrest and the "people" they were trying to control were carrying signs "we want jobs", "give us food". so the military is training for just what you posted.sad to say once anything happens NOBAMA will shut down cell phones and the internet, remember "dont let a good emergency go to waste"!they will shut us from keeping in touch with each other so we cant organize a defense against their trying to control us.
i have a friend who has guns and ammo buried in the desert he told me you never know when you might need them. he was an army ranger and told me the first thing the govt. will do is shut down communication, now that NOBAMA has the internet kill switch how fast will he use it? i do believe HE will use it quicker than poop thru a goose. he wants a marxist country and thats a fast way to keep us sheep quiet, but i think "they" underestemate these sheep.
hilary clinton wants the U.S. to join the U.N.'s gun ban so nows the time to get your guns and ammo before you cant get it or they want to take them away.
hitler said in the 30's when they banned guns that crime was going to drop so the people went along with it. but what he wanted was to have control over the people, same thing that is happening today. oh we will be sooooo much safer with gun control, no it makes it easier to take over.
buy,hide, lock and load.

What I want to know about the 23% who think the US is heading in the right direction: "What in the world could they be thinking?"

This administration has maintained a horrible 9% unemployment rate, the economy is a terrible wreck, we have a staggering $14.4 trillion national debt, and Washington is in chaos. What lunatic thinks this is the right direction for the United States?

These people must have just come out of a long evening in a bar, or possibly the survey was conducting in a mental institute.
