Obama's approval rating on economy falls to 33 percent in new poll

A majority of Americans think President Obama's $447 biillion proposal to create jobs will not actually help lower the unemployment rate, according to a poll released Wednesday by Bloomberg.

And his overall approval rating on the economy fell to 33 percent from 39 percent in June. His approval rating on the economy was 43 percent in March.

His economic disapproval ratings rose to 67 percent from 57 percent in June and 52 percent in March.

Those are grim numbers for the White House and the trend is clearly going in the wrong direction just as the campaign season heats up.

And they come just one day after Democrats lost two seats in the House of Representatives in special elections that could resonate with voters next year.

Republican Bob Turner, a retired cable executive, defeated State Assemblyman David Weprin 54 percent to 46 percent for the heavily Democratic New York seat formerly held by Anthony Weiner.

In Nevada, Republican Mark Amodei defeated Democrat Kate Marshall, though his win in the heavily Republican district was less surprising than Turner's victory.

Mr. Obama is scheduled to be in North Carolina on Wednesday to make a pitch for his plan and how it would help small businesses and education.

Our problems can't be solved until we become honest about some things. There are many dynamics that have factored in to why things are as bad as they are; and , quite frankly, the president's job performance isn't the main cause. As much as many people don't want to revisit how we got here, it's a big part of the problem.President Bush started out with a surplus, and put the country into a huge deficit through 2 wars, and a prescription drug plan that wasn't paid for.A lot of revenue was taken out of the system by way of those 2 things, alone.Common sense would say that if we are going to fight 2 wars, and pass a large drugs plan , we need a way to fund this; but that didn't happen.Instead, he continued down an ideological path that says Tax cuts+deregulation ( or unenforced regulation ) on the business sector=a booming economy.Well, that theory was tested, and as we are still seeing to this day, it has proven to be a great failure, with disastrous effects on the economy. Only approximately 3,000,000 jobs were created over the entire 8 years of the Bush presidency ( and by the way, since Pres. Obama has been in office, many analysts believe that he has created that many already), and studies show that the middle-class' incomes shrunk over that same period. When President Obama took office, and got the Stimulus bill passed, it gave the economy a boost. Many are in denial , but the facts prove that it did create some jobs, saved more jobs, kept the U.S. auto industry from going under; and bailed out many states. We started to net jobs; but there was a direct correlation between spending and growth. The president had the right idea, but not enough fire power in the actual size of the stimulus package to get the Phoenix out of the ashes. Many will argue that President Obama's policies have made the economy worse because the unemployment rate has gone up almost 2 percentage points since he took office, not down; but putting the brakes on this faltering economy was like trying to stop a train abruptly-the brakes can be applied, but the train isn't going to stop right away because of the speed that it is moving at.Fast forward to today. This country , not just Barack Obama, has been experiencing the makings of the perfect storm for failure, mainly because of ideological extremism and politics. Those on the right seem to hold a belief that much, if not most, of the spending that is done on the federal level is wasteful, and unnecessary; and the issue of the deficit has become the tool that they have used to drive an agenda that makes spending cuts for things that they don't believe in anyway.Right now, the president has a jobs bill on the table that , at the very least would keep things from getting worse; but,Republicans , who control the House, have the ability to obstruct the passage of the bill; and there is nothing that the president can really do to change that.We have seen them run this same play time and time again, partly for ideological reasons, partly to deny Barack Obama a win ( and , of course, the president will get blamed for the failure of it all) , but its all at the public's loss.To make matters worse, most Republicans in congress have signed pledges, not to the American people, as his document states, but in reality to Grover Norquist to never raise taxes. There is no way for them to operate in good faith with the president , nor the American people under such circumstances because they have signed their votes away already. At some point, there will be a need for additional revenue to solve problems, whether it's funding a necessary war, an agency like FEMA that has been depleted because of disasters, or like now, to right an ailing economy.Ronald Reagan knew how to be pragmatic, when necessary. He made budget deals with the then Democratic Speaker of The House, Tip O'Neill, and he raised taxes for the good of the country , 11 times.Republicans would often refer and defer to Reagan, but they seem to have forgotten all of this.Right now,it looks like they, President Obama, and all of America and our economy are being held captive by Grover Norquist.

Wow, great post. Completely factual. Unfortunately, no one will take time to read it much and the conservatives will make all kinds of emotional, non-factual replies. You really did your homework. If you were in the Army I'd recommend you for a commendation medal. Respectfully, retired US Army Medical Officer.

Wow, this is not getting any better. I think sometime between now and the spring the media will finally own up and tell us the truth, we are and have been in decline since 2007, that gov spending has driven us into a huge hole, that 50 million plus people on gov aid is not good, that labor unions and the assoicated costs make us non competetive, that gov spending does not create the jobs we need, you want jobs look at China and India and you'll find how to put people to work and get the slugs off their as**'s, who just hang around the mail box wiating for their next check, off our backs. You want to justify gov aid then drug test them. Open gov stores for those on food stamps. You they get a credit card now so they can pretty much spend on what they want and give/sell it to others to use. No one checks for an I.D. if they have a card they run it thru, no questions asked.

Did you see his latest Jobs stimulus plan of another 450 billion. All the old ideas that have been tried and failed before. I saw the Romney plan that had 59 actions and 160 pages of implementation plans. What did Obama come up with, he asked the congressional debt committee to do the job. Yes, this is real leadership from the top.

Apparently there is a section of the bill that states if you don't get hired after an interview, you can sue for discrimination..... If that is what's in there then that's not going to lead to to many job openings..

It is a shame people blame the President when he has so little to do with it. Most of this is residual economic malaise from the bush repuglican majority administration with their massive tax cuts and two unfunded wars. People also fail to give Obama credit for the stimulus package that staved off a worldwide depression. 9.1% unemployment is not good, but it would have headed way past 15% without the stimulus. It is congress, not the President, who have tied the government's purse strings and refuse to spend the money required to restart the economy. The bush tax cuts for the wealthy need to be allowed to expire to put the government back on sound financial footing, and in the meantime, it should borrow to finance a massive infrastructure renewal and jobs program to bring back our middle working class. The government is already one of our largest employers and this conservative lie that the government does not provide jobs needs to be challenged whenever it is spewed it out. Respectfully, retired US Army Medical Officer.

elliesamericana, the real unemployment rate is above 15%, check out the the U6 (it's 16.2%). If you wish to blame Bush, that's fine, but the problem Obama has is he cannot grasp what it would really take to put us back on a solid foundation, his only answer is to spend more money that we don't have. He is stuck on stupid.

Obama must realize most of his policies are temporary in nature. They will not fix the economy. What is need is a permanent FOUNDATION FOR GROWTH. If Obama wants to keep the wages of his union buddies ARTIFICIALLY HIGH, he must come up with other ways to lower the cost of production in the United States. If it cost more to produce a product in the US, companies will expand and add jobs outside the country. It is that simple. If Obama does not want to deal with the labor cost issue, the only other tools he can use to lower the cost of production are LOWER TAXES and LESS INTRUSIVE REGULATION.

Obama needs to stop pushing for alternative energy because it costs more to produce than it costs to produce conventional energy. That means the taxpayer pays an added cost twice: once for the money the government gives to the alternative energy companies and again because the energy produced by them costs more.

Instead of the government doing more and spending more, the government must stop the spending that only has a temporary effect, cut taxes, reduce the unsustainable public debt, and eliminate the oppressive regulation.

Obama also needs to do something about the culture we are breeding in the US which encourages people to depend on the system to survive. 46 million on food stamps and the millions who do not pay income taxes is more than we can afford.

We must continue to VOTE THEM OUT!!!
