Obama on immigration: "I need a dance partner"

President Obama on Monday lamented the bitterly partisan nature of contemporary Congress, stating that when it comes to working with Republicans on immigration issues, "I need a dance partner... and the floor is empty."

In a speech before the National Council of La Raza (NCLR), the nation's largest Latino advocacy group, the president reiterated his commitment to overhauling the American immigration system - but noted that, however tempting the idea, he could not just bypass Congress to change laws.

"Right now dealing with Congress... Believe me, the idea of doing things on my own is very tempting - not just on immigration reform," Mr. Obama said, laughing, as cries of "Yes you can!" came from the audience.

As the 2012 presidential campaign heats up, candidates on both sides of the aisle will almost certainly face pressure to outline their positions on immigration reform - particularly to the rapidly-growing Latino community and Americans concerned about border control.

Many immigration rights activists have argued that the president could, if he wanted to, bypass Congress by using his administrative powers to defer action in deporting promising young students.

The president, however, argued on Monday that "That's not how our system works."

"That's not how our democracy functions," he added.

Mr. Obama has long voiced his support for comprehensive immigration reform, but Congress' inability last year to pass the DREAM Act -- a bill that aimed to provide upstanding young undocumented immigrants with a path to citizenship -- has led some to question Democrats' seriousness on the issue.

In recent months, however, he has made a renewed push to highlight his commitment to immigration reform. In June, he spoke about the issue during a visit to Puerto Rico. And in April, the president met with a group of administration officials and stakeholders to discuss the importance of reviving a constructive conversation about reforming the system.

In his Monday remarks, Mr. Obama again urged the Latino community to put the pressure on Republicans in its bid for reform -- and, in an overtly political statement, argued that Democrats were not to blame for the lack of action.

"Feel free to keep the heat on me, and keep the heat on Democrats - but here's the only thing you should know: the Democrats and your president are with you. Don't get confused about that," he said. "Remember who it is that we need to move in order to actually change the laws."

He contended he wouldn't be able to push through comprehensive immigration reform without the support of a broad coalition.

"Usually, as soon as I come out in favor of something, about half of Congress is immediately against it - even if it was originally their idea," Mr. Obama said. "You notice how that works?"

"I need you to keep building a movement for change outside of Washington," he added.

The president also pledged to push for the cause on his own.

"I will keep up this fight," he said. "Because Washington is way behind where the rest of the country knows we need to go."

Looks like you're dancing with the La Raza devil, Obama. Why are you bowing down to Latino RACISTS and TERRORISTS that spit on our AMERICAN flag? In case you haven't noticed, the MAJORITY of American citizens don't want to grant amnesty to the nit infestation from Latin America. You're welcome to go south of the border to rule them in their own country.

It suddenly hit me hard. The dance partner Obama needs are the American People. It could get done if that were to happen, and if the American People were working for his position, I think it would happen.

Obama is not working for those things that the American People want. There is no effort to deny Hispanics their place in the sun, but there is a very serious dislike for the fake I.D.'s, the welfare, and all the things that are happening in public view on this issue. And so, Obama does not have the American People at his back.. he has politicians at his back, and a political solution of this issue is very, very off base. Where he should be going after Mexico, he is going after the American People with a punitive process. I very much hope he loses.

well, reagan is dead if you haven't heard. And this topic is about obama's tap dancing around the illegal immigration issue.
And since obama would love to grant amnesty to shore-up the latino vote and since obama wants the government to provide nationalized healthcare it just seems like an obvious question to ask obama.

Believe me.. I believe him. And that is why Lamar Smith got that law in place that halted all those amnesties he was giving. I can see that guy giving all illegal aliens in this country amnesty. If Obama heads into the end of his Presidency without any hope of re-election, I think we had better brace ourselves for yet another effort to create those voters for the Democratic Party.

2008 Presidential election facts: Number of States won by: Obama: 19 McCain: 29, Square miles of land won by: Obama: 580,000 McCain: 2,427,000, Population of counties won by: Obama: 127 million McCain: 143 million, Murder rate per 100,000 residents in counties won by: Obama: 13.2, McCain: 2.1

Obama territory mostly encompassed those citizens living in low income tenements and living off various forms of government welfare..." If Congress grants amnesty and citizenship to twenty million criminal invaders called illegal's - and they vote - then we can say goodbye to the USA in fewer than five years.

Well first of all both sides of the aisle recognize the need for emmigration reform and Pres Obama is only looking at helping those that would benefit society an option to optain residency status. The path to citizenship is long and arduous and even if he could get a bill through Congress today, no one affected by it could obtain citizenship and register to vote in time for the 2012 elections. You comments are just drival.

Please, understand that there is only one thing to do concerning immigration. #1 shut down the borders. Lock all gates. Place enough troops along the borders and long the beaches on both the Atlantic and the Pacific oceans. #2 then go after all illegal immigrants and get them back to where they came from. If they took the time to start family here, then they all should be kept together and sent together back to where they came from using the legality of the Father and/or mother. #3 Enforce all laws. Forbid Congress to do any reform bills on immigration. Enforce the laws that are on the books now. #4 For those who were born here of illegal immigrants, they should not be allowed to attend college or enter into military service until they can prove their loyalty to the United States. Simple. It's all so simple. If they can't abide by our laws, then it's time to go home.
