President Obama met with House Speaker John Boehner and his deputy Eric Cantor on Sunday to hammer out differences over a plan to raise the nation's legal borrowing limit and reduce the deficit over time.

"We're making progress," Mr. Obama told reporters in the Rose Garden on Monday when asked about the pow-wow with the top two Republicans in the House of Representatives.

Meanwhile, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid on Monday vowed to keep senators in Washington until lawmakers from both parties can come to an agreement to raise the nation's $14.3 trillion debt ceiling by August 2.

That's when the U.S. runs out of options to avoid defaulting on its debt obligations if the legal limit is not raised, according to the Obama administration and most economists, including Federal Reserve Board Chairman Ben Bernanke, who served as a top adviser to President George W. Bush before taking the helm at the U.S. central bank.

Reid and Republican Senate Leader Mitch McConnell are working on changes to the Kentucky lawmaker's proposal to raise the borrowing limit in exchange for a trio of politically unpopular votes on the government's spending limit between now and Election Day 2012.

A CBS News poll released Monday showed that 71 percent of respondents disapprove of the way Republicans have handled the debt talks.

Meanwhile, the House of Representatives this week plans to vote on its own more conservative proposal, though it is not expected to garner enough support to pass the Democratically-controlled Senate. The House plan, known as "cut, cap and balance," conditions an increase in the U.S. borrowing limit on an amendment to the U.S. Constitution that would require a balanced budget each year.

The House plan would limit federal spending at 18 percent of economic output over the next decade, a figure House Republicans says is appropriate because it would place spending in line with average revenue over the last three decades.

Mr. Obama has threatened to veto that plan.

58% of poll respondents don't like how either group is operating yet the article is squarely biased against the GOP. Both parties suck according to the poll.

What a farce this debt ceiling charade is! The debt ceiling has been raised 89 times since 1939. It was raised seven times when Dubya was president, and it should be raised immediately now, on a straight up-or-down vote, with no strings attached! To try to gut Social Security, which hasn't contributed a nickel to the debt, as part of raising the debt ceiling is heartless, mindless and downright treasonous! There will be millions of human lives impacted, including young children, if they don't receive their Social Security checks. Any Republican who advocates defaulting on the national debt to destroy social safety net programs they may not like should be impeached or subjected to immediate recall elections. Republicans are irresponsible and infantile and it serves them right if these actions cause them to be a minority party for decades to come!

This latest Tea Party idea was put out there at the last minute and Rubio accuses President Obama of waiting until the last minute. President Obama put out a $4 trillion over 10 year proposal in April, he did NOT wait.

The fact of the matter is that you cannot provide such a link to such douments becuase such documents do not exist.

POTUS submitted a budget that was rejected by the Dem controlled Senate 97-0. It was known the budget was DOA and yet it was still submitted. This is the same politics POTUS accuses others of playing while POTUS acts the Virgin.

In April there was lip service to a concept of a $4T reduction without ever any specifics of the plan ever provided to this day. The only spending cuts hypothetically discussed appear to be from the budget rejected 97-0 so those aren't even spending cuts!

Quit claiming the Dem's are such Virgins and so high and mighty. Their spending spree over the last 3 years is why the USA is at the point it is at right now.
