Do July 4th festivities make you Republican?

A new study argues that July 4th celebrations may not be as innocent as they seem - at least from the democratic perspective.

According to the report, published by Harvard University, July 4th-themed festivities (defined by the study as fireworks, parades, political speeches, and barbecues) not only energize primarily Republicans, but also turn children into Republicans and increase GOP voter turnout.

Simply put: "Fourth of July celebrations in the United States shape the nation's political landscape by forming beliefs and increasing participation, primarily in favor of the Republican Party," says the report, which was written by Harvard Kennedy School Assistant Professor David Yanagizawa-Drott and Bocconi University Assistant Professor Andreas Madestam.

"The political right has been more successful in appropriating American patriotism and its symbols during the 20th century," the authors write. "Survey evidence also confirms that Republicans consider themselves more patriotic than Democrats. According to this interpretation, there is a political congruence between the patriotism promoted on Fourth of July and the values associated with the Republican party."

The study suggests that celebrating July 4 is, essentially, a lose-lose proposition for Democrats: Not only will they not likely gain any devotees from the festivities - they might actually lose some.

"There is no evidence of an increased likelihood of identifying as a Democrat, indicating that Fourth of July shifts preferences to the right rather than increasing political polarization," the study continues.

Children, the authors posit, are particularly vulnerable to the implications of the (apparently) politically-loaded parades.

"Fourth of July celebrations in Republican dominated counties may thus be more politically biased events that socialize children into Republicans," say Yanagizawa-Drott and Madestam.

"We were surprised to find that childhood experiences of Fourth July celebrations could have such persistent effects. The evidence suggests that important childhood events can have a permanent impact on political beliefs and behavior and that Fourth of July celebrations in the US affect the nation's political landscape," adds Yanagizawa-Drott.

Of course, not everyone will be particularly concerned with the possible political implications of July 4th celebrations. If you're looking for a more patriotic experience, you might want to check out a parade in a particularly Republican-skewing part of town - according to the report, "Republican adults celebrate Fourth of July more intensively in the first place."

I'm not surprised by this story in the least, but not for the reasons anyone tasked to recruit new members to Republican ranks would necessarily like.

It's reasonably evident that the Republicans have been more successful in appropriating symbols of patriotism than the Democrats have. Less evident, however, to at least some is that sometimes the methods used by the Republicans in trying to appropriate that image have often bordered on dirty tricks, and sometimes have strayed across the line.

Specifically, the accuse Democrats of being of at best questionable loyalty, perhaps even out-and-out treason-inclined -- without a shred of proof. And yes, I personally have heard self-identified Republicans make such asinine allegations, in public settings no less.

To be fair, in the days when the forerunners of Blue Dog Democrats held iron sway in my home state -- Texas -- they painted the rare Republican as being at least bordering on treason, and arguably in league with Satan. And no, I'm not kidding -- not one bit. That was every bit as asinine.

But that was then. Today, Republicans hold the crown for falsely labeling those who disagree with them.

That doesn't make them traitors, however, though I have little doubt in the reverse situation they certainly would question mine and anyone else who disagreed with them on ANY point. It's not enough to agree with many Republican views (as I do) -- they demand I'm either for them or against them, up or down, not a syllable of dissent.

And I won't brook that from them, any more than I brooked it from the Brass Collar Democrats of Texas yore.

JV1970, why do you support Republicons who have done such awful damage to our economy? And the people like Cain and Palin are such simpletons who can hardly read (or don't want to). How are they to keep up with all the technology and science and make important decisions for America? Or does that not matter to you?

The reason Republicons wrap themselves in the flag and pretend they love America is because it is EXACTLY the opposite. All you have to do is get past their symbols and see what they do and hear what they say and you know they hate America.

Since the patriotism of Democrats clearly cannot be trusted I suggest the country would be safer if all soldiers who vote Democrat should be removed from all combat zones immediately and replaced with good solid loyal Republican soldiers,a sort of Republican "surge" if you will.

Good idea since republicans claim that democrats aren't patriotic, they can fight the wars they started.

I know you Democrats probably won't like the statement I'm about to make but people forget that the United States is a republic. In that sense we are all republicans if you are a US citizen and I'm not referring to the political party.

Right. And we aspire to a democracy; so vote democratic, not republican, if you care.

Btw, this is a textbook case of "correlation does not imply causation". Of course those who understand basic statistics are more likely to be Democratic. No cure for ignorance anyway.

For example, I attended Fourth of July parades growing up, and the only Republican I ever voted for was Bob Dole in '96, and he'd probably be called a flaming liberal nowadays.

So much for that specious theory. :-)

SunnyGuy53 Thank you for answering my post. However, apparently you haven't read any of my other posts because I need to tell you that I'm a conservative Christian Republican though I wasn't referring to the political party in my post. I do, though, vote Republican. I'm a Bachmann and Cain supporter and I will support Palin and Perry if they decide to get in the race.

I don't know what state dagrandma is from but in my state both Democrats and Republicans are having a hard time finding work. I'm wondering, you must live in a state that went for Obama and he's paying off the people who voted for him like he's doing with the Unions?

Children are being taught a double standard that it is ok for the Founding Fathers to have committed the atrocities of rape, torture, murder, enslavement because they were "American Patriots."

There is a subliminal message of Supremacy in placing the Founding Fathers on a pedestal as American Icons.

It's all part of the GOP brainwashing agenda. Just like Guns and Abortion. Go look at how the GOP vote against and cut the funding for our soldiers and first responders care after being hurt. You can see our Vets attack Mr. Patriotism himself, John McCain, right on You Tube, for voting against their healthcare like 6 times in a row. All the GOP care about are profits. And now they're even putting profits over people's lives. You'll see when whole families start dying of cancer from all of the toxic chemicals and radioactive waste being dumped into our water supply. It's going to be funny watching the look on Conservatives faces when they find out all of those conspiracy theorists knew what they were talking about all along.

Wait! Wait! It's really..... hot dogs! Republicans and conservatives were fed more hot dogs when they were young and so aquired a taste for them. Liberals and big baddy guvment say they are bad for you and the environment. Of course it causes them to be more conservative. There is a definite correlation here! I can make a study out of this. Could someone give me a grant for say 500K ti study this.
