After much speculation, Huma Abedin did not appear at husband Anthony Weiner's side as he resigned from Congress on Thursday afternoon.

The outgoing N.Y. Democrat resigned nearly three weeks after the revelation that he had been sending a number of women lewd pictures of himself on the Internet.

Weiner apologized to Abedin during his resignation speech, and expressed the hope that "my wife and I can continue to heal from the damage I have caused."

Abedin, who was seen entering the couple's home in Queens before the press conference, married Weiner last year in a ceremony officiated by Former President Bill Clinton. According to reports, the couple is expecting their first child.

The scandal had become a distraction for House Democrats, who had raised pressure on Weiner to resign in recent days after he admitted June 6 to exchanging lewd photos and messages with women he met online. Abedin, who is to known to avoid the spotlight, also was not present during Weiner's press conference last week.

Weiner late Wednesday told House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi of his plan to step down Thursday, two Democratic aides told CBS News. Pelosi had called for his resignation Saturday and President Obama weighed in late Monday, saying if it were him, he would resign. House Speaker John Boehner called for his resignation Tuesday.

Many speculated that Weiner held off on making a decision until Abedin, an aide to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, returned from an overseas trip.

I wouldn't read too much into her not showing up because since these scandals have become so common, it's come to be known that it's inhumane to make the wives stand up there a la Deena McGreevy or Silda Spitzer, when they're so obviously in deep pain.

That being said, now that Weinie's resigned, the big question for me is what's Huma going to do?

I can't stop thinking about what I would do in her place - who wants to go through a pregnancy and raising a toddler alone? And now Weinie's got the time to be a stay-at-home dad ... maybe he could change the diapers.

Then again, would you still want to be married to somebody who was doing all these perverted stuff on the internet? And then have everybody snicker at you two when you went anywhere public? You'd have to live with the whispers - people in the room gossiping, wondering why you stayed.

Of course her mentor, that ruthless beast Hillary stayed, and then nearly parlayed that into becoming President! But Clinton was still beloved and had the support of the Democratic machine. Weiner's persona non grata in their circles now ...

If I were her, probably I'd stay together until the baby's born, wait 6 months and then file for divorce. Haven't they only been married a couple of years? And didn't Maria Shriver give it several months?

You hardly ever read of a wife leaving one of these scumbags.

Sanford's wife was one of the few with scruples.

He just had an affair though - and he was in love with the other woman and told her he had found his soulmate and it wasn't her.

More Rudy Giuliani than David Vitter I suppose ...

I wasn't speculating whether Huma would show up or not - why the heck would she show up?

I did place a long shot bet that Weiner would drop his pants - darn it, what a time he picked to play it straight.

Some Assets are Best Left Hidden

So Anthony could not hang on
and very soon he will be gone.
Can anyone account for the actions of Mr. Weiner,
that would explain his bizarre demeanor?.

What can have happened to his brain
that made him flush everything down the drain?
Why did he, judged by colleagues as being among the bright,
put on his future so damaging a blight?

Was it attention that he sought?
Did he unconsciously want to he caught?
Was he suffering from depression?
Was it perhaps a Freudian repression?

A pity when the good doctor lectured about behavioral disorders
no-one had yet invented recorders.
Did he really claim that what every woman, including Venus,
yearned for most of all was to have a *****.

***** envy was the term he used
and it has left politicians and sportsmen confused.
They believe it meant women wanted theirs to be shown
instead of longing to have one of their own.

This has led to a spate of tweeted pictures
that brought upon the senders outraged strictures.
It's not easy to understand how anyone a thrill could get
by exposing their intimate details on the net.

The moral is one that's very clear.
One should not show the whole world all one's gear
So let any man who would like to be thought of as a masher
be careful not to become a cyberflasher.

All of which makes us wonder, how much responsibility does a politician owe the public when it comes to revealing what s/he does behind closed doors? Or to take it a step further: how much does anyone need to let others know what they are up to in their private time (assuming of course they are not using public forums such as Twitter as Mr Weiner was)?

Cheers to the beginning of a new era: the social media sex scandal.

Funny you mentioned that.
Back in 1995 we have Jennifer Flowers on a radio station here in my home town talking about here affair with Bill Clinton. Jennifer said she asked him if Hillary knew about his affairs with her and his other mistresses and was upset and he said, 'Why she's had more women than I have' and doesn't care.

Why should she be there and forever be seen in pictures with him at his resignation speech? She has a career of her own and needs to be associated with him in public as little as possible. He made this mess; he needs to take the fall out himself.
