UPDATED 4:45 p.m.

Texas Governor Rick Perry is "serious" about making a run for the White House, sources close to Perry tell CBS News.

Perry has been talking with financial backers for the past week on a possible bid and even held a conference call earlier in the week to discuss the matter, the sources told CBS' Jan Crawford.

But Perry was reluctant to run for the nomination without key advisers, including his former campaign manager Rob Johnson and his top political consultant Dave Carney, both of whom were working on the presidential campaign of former House Speaker Newt Gingrich.

Johnson and Carney announced their resignations from the Gingrich campaign Thursday as part of a huge shake-up of the organization.

As Bill Maher said, "A gun slingin' Gov from Texas? What could possibly go wrong?"

So the "gunslinger" is now serious about running. Guess he thinks it's a good idea since God hasn't answered his prayers for rain in West Texas. Then of course his buddies dumped the Newt, so why not run? He can ride "through town firing his guns".

"As a nation, we must come together and call upon Jesus to guide us through unprecedented struggles, and thank Him for the blessings of freedom," reads a statement from Perry.

This is Perry speaking about his "call to prayer" in August.

I wonder whom he would represent as president? hmmmm

This guy has zero chance after he hinted at succession.

USA_is_back, no one with any brain cells would qoute Fox for a news source. It's a right wing propaganda network that tells the troops how to tie their shoes just like Rush. Your attempts are hilarious. I bet you support Palin and her Paul Revere comments too. You are exactly the type of people our founding fathers enacted an electoral college for, as you are too dumb to vote in their eyes.

I think if you look at USA is Back's comments, you'd see that he/she has no regard for palin.

ah, no; it's the presidency of the confederacy he's running for.

Flip-flop Perry -- Secede and become President of Texas or stay in the Union and run for President of the US?

When has Perry talked about secession?

April 2009 - shortly after Obama started as President

All you liberal fools listen up - your blue states such as CA, NY, IL, CT, NV are bankrupt because of decades of liberal feel good policies. The reaper has come to collect his dues and now you must pay up.

This is why the liberal government intelligentsia from CA came to Austin, TX to see how we do things here. It's a fairly simple formula, do not over regulate and create an environment friendly to business. Success and prosperity will soon follow.

Unless this country gets back to the true conservative principals that made us great we will continue to circle the drain. This is why Rick Perry is the man to reverse course and get us moving in the right direction.

To USA_is_back: http://www.taxfoundation.org/news/show/27282.html

New Mexico is a blue state. Texas gets .94 cents for every dollar of Federal income tax. While I see your point pal, there are other taxes besides FIT such as real estate, state income, sales, sin tax and others. Notably the blue states take the cake with state level taxes.

"true conservative principals that made us great..."

You mean the Great Depression, and our current one.

Here's another missed point: Republicans are pizzpoor at successful military endeavors. Look at THAT record for the last 100 years, what do you have. Korean Armistace, Desert Storm and Grenada, wow....

I live in Austin Texas! our schools get cut, teachers are fired, fire fighters get cut, no healthcare for children, schools rank 45, we have a 25 billion deficit, all because of tax Perry pushed for 5 five years ago. He was warned it would lead to a budget short fall!

What a record to run, h can not run on fiscal responsible, with 25 billion in deficit. Great!

I live in Austin for 20 years and you are totally full of beans. We have some of the best schools in the country in Austin and Kiker and Joe Dan Mills elementary are award winning schools. The home prices in my neighborhood very solid because of these schools. No healthcare for children?! What are you smoking?! And since when is it the governments job to provide your children with healthcare? You decided to reproduce, you accept the responsibility for the costs and care for that child, it's not my responsibility.

20 years ago I moved from a blue state NJ to a red state TX due to the high cost of living in the northeast and the over governed and over taxed environment. Although I was a native son in NJ with a post graduate education and a professional credential I recognized 20 years ago that I would never have a chance at enjoying the standard of living which my parents had enjoyed. I was accepted with open arms in Texas and have had tremendous success both financially and personally. Rick Perry represents everything that is good in Texas and I would be proud to have him as our president. Perry has the experience that is needed to handle the Oval Office, unlike the community organizer who has never even practiced law, his chosen profession.

Perry/Bachmann or Perry/Cain will win in a record landslide, mark my words.

DJ - I'm not normally into correcting people but just a bit of information here...

Succeed is to accomplish.

Secede is to withdraw!
