Texas Republican Gov. Rick Perry is calling on Americans to join him in Houston in August for a prayer and fasting event to heal "a nation that has not honored God in our successes or humbly called on Him in our struggles."

"According to the Bible, the answer to a nation in such crisis is to gather in humility and repentance and ask God to intervene," says the website for the event. "The Response will be a historic gathering of people from across the nation to pray and fast for America."

The event, called "The Response, a Call to Prayer for a Nation in Crisis," will be held in at Reliant Stadium in Houston on August 6. It is described as "a non-denominational, apolitical Christian prayer meeting."

"There is hope for America," Perry says in a letter posted on the website. "It lies in heaven, and we will find it on our knees."

A video on the site shows a series of Americans complaining of "perversion," terrorism, addiction and other problems facing the country. They say there must be a response in the form of an appeal to God, one that will "make a sound that will be heard in heaven."

Perry has been discussed as a potential 2012 potential Republican presidential candidate. While he has played down his interest, he has also said he is considering making a run, and is reportedly discussing the possibility with his Texas donors.

In April, Perry issued a proclamation calling on Texans to pray for rain to help end drought-fueled wildfires in the state, one of many calls for prayer he has issued as governor.

A spokesman for "The Response" told Reuters that the American Family Association, a conservative Christian group based in Mississippi, is footing the bill for the event. Admission will be free. The American Family Association has organized boycotts of television shows and businesses it believes show anti-Christian bias or support the "homosexual agenda."

Could we finally get a "man" and "grownup" as President after 2 1/2 years of "man-child/blamer in chief"? How about someone taking charge of this country and turning it around? (obviously, man-child can't)
I don't care if he prays, this country is so screwed up morally, we could use some prayers.

Sign me up! For the prayer (gasp!) event, for donations to your presidential campaign, and for a slot as a campaign volunteer worker, soon-to-be-President Perry. Rock on!

Apparently, Mr. Former_Marine_Sgt above doesn't believe in anything and is unreasonably resentful of anyone who mentions prayer. You got a thing against prayer, sir? I don't see anywhere in this article the Governor Perry is "FORCING his version of Christianity" on anyone. His meeting is not a political meeting, it is an "Apolitical" meeting, which means it is a politically neutral meeting, meant to observe prayer to God for the problems that America faces, all politics aside. I probably do not share the same "version" of christianity that Rick Perry observes, but I see nothing wrong with an all-voluntary call to prayer. But then, I guess it only irks you because you are obviously not a man of faith, and so, because any mention of prayer angers your father the Devil, then it angers you. But hey, that's gonna have to be between you and God. It is He who will judge the world in the end.

I have just seen a wonderful comment from the collected the wisdom of the Youtube comment boards. I am sure many have seen it before however in the light of recent revelations it seems particularly apt.

"Treat your religion like your genitalia. Don't wave it around in public and don't shove it down your kids throats."

If he keeps on praying, then Texas is in more trouble than they already are. Droughts, wild fires, tornados, hail storms, bad schools, college students packing guns to class, huge state deficits. Wow, his answers to pray are scary!!!
