Romney launches presidential bid with Obama "misery index" attack

Mitt Romney launched his presidential campaign in New Hampshire today with a scathing attack on President Obama's economic record, pointing to several lagging economic indicators he called "President Obama's own misery index."

"Barack Obama has failed America," Romney said from a farm in Stratham. "When he took office, the economy was in recession. He made it worse. And he made it last longer."

More than 16 million Americans are out of work or have stopped looking for work, he said, unemployment remains above 8 percent, foreclosures are still at record levels and home prices continue to fall. On top of that, the national debt has grown, as have food and gas prices.

"These failing hopes make up President Obama's own misery index. It's never been higher," Romney said. "Mr. President, you've had your chance."

Romney touted his own record as a businessman and entrepreneur, arguing, "the American ideals of economic freedom and opportunity need a clear and unapologetic defense, and I intend to make it because I have lived it."

While the former Massachusetts governor focused on his economic record both in the private and public sectors, he also addressed -- albeit briefly -- his record on health care reform, which has turned into his largest political vulnerability.(Watch his health care remarks at left.)

As conservatives wage court battles against President Obama's "individual mandate" -- the law requiring that all Americans purchase health insurance by 2014 -- Romney has had to explain why he implemented a mandate at the state level in Massachusetts.

"The state was giving away over a billion dollars in free health care, much of it to people who could have paid something but were gaming the system," he said today. "You won't be surprised that a lot of Democrats thought we should be giving away even more. I took it on and hammered out a solution that took a bad situation and made it better. Not perfect, but it was a state solution for a state problem."

The former governor quickly turned back to his economic record, noting that he balanced the state budget and cut taxes in Massachusetts 19 times.

Health care reform is just one issue Democrats have already seized on to undermine Romney's campaign. Today, the Democratic National Committee released a web video that highlights some of Romney's seemingly conflicting statements on health care and issues like the bank bailouts and the stimulus.

While Romney fends off charges he's a "flip-flopper," he also trying to craft a more relaxed image in his second bid for the White House. He stood before the New Hampshire crowd today in a button-downed shirt with no jacket or tie, peppering his speech with a couple of jokes about the Northeast.

His familiar tone illustrated Romney's strong standing in the region and the state, where he will have to win the primary if he hopes to remain a viable candidate. His potential opponents aren't ceding the state to him, however -- Sarah Palin's "One Nation" bus tour stops in New Hampshire today, and former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman is expected to make an appearance there this week as well. Even former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, recently named as another possible presidential contender, is in the state today.

Romney's message today, however, focused on just one clear opponent -- Mr. Obama. He castigated the president for seeming to "take his inspiration not from the small towns and villages of New Hampshire but from the capitals of Europe."

He blasted increased government spending and bureaucracy, including a "disastrous national health care plan" that he promised a "complete repeal" of.

Romney also charged Mr. Obama is following Europe's lead in his relations with Israel, treating the U.S. ally "with suspicion, distrust and an assumption that Israel is at fault."

While he criticized Mr. Obama's foreign policy, he did give the president credit for ordering the raid that killed Osama bin Laden, as well as ordering the troop surge in Afghanistan.

Obama saved us from going into an even worse depression than we are in. He inherited a Republicon caused disaster that has been 30 years in the making since the dismal failure of Reagan.

The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities has updated a widely cited chart to show that Bush-era tax cuts to the rich and two ill-advised wars - not the economic downturn - are primarily responsible for the massive debt now driving Republicans to cut health, education, social services and every other remotely useful program

It's time the nation told you spoiled children to stop whining and take responsibility for the mess your party's economic policies--followed by spineless democrats as well as those in the fascist party--- have brought upon this nation. You have some nerve talking about the eldery going hungry when your pathetic elitist party wants to deny the those very people medical coverage in exchange for a voucher that will buy NOTHING! I've looked at both of those. Can't find the President's new budget or his actual plans to fix this?

I see campaign style rhetoric, but no hard facts or numbers.

Are they hiding them in these sites?

Why are they hiding them?

Shouldn't there be great big links on the front page that says, "President's plan to avert the coming economic catastrophe"

Or "President's plan to get food money to seniors in event that debt ceiling isn't raised"?

I can't find anything.

Can anybody?

Anyone?

Romney supporters have short memories and love to rewrite history. I can never follow a leader who depends on false beliefs to survive and prosper. That is why I do support Obama and shun the GOP in it's entirety.

c'mon now. someone has to run against the mighty obama. or has the entire nation crowned obama king for life. if you love obama, then vote for him else vote for someone who has the stones to run against the mighty obama. simple as that. give anyone a chance to run against obama, it is still a democracy here in the usa. or has that changed since obama took office? the way some people defend and stand with obama, it appears that others are being denied their liberty, their freedom to run against obama or vote against him. democrats, liberals, are just as bad as any other political party. just read some of these postings attacking romney or anyone else that dares to run agains the mighty obama.

Oh someone should run against President Obama. It is just that Romney is soft boiled eggs. A made for TV Republican. Consider the likelihood of a Republican Senate and a Republican House and a second Obama term. Given Obama's norm of sliding right at almost every opportunity all indications are he will be Clinton light, a Republican feeding ground.

With that as baseline then the Republican challenger should push the envelope, not camouflage it. Cain, Pawlenty or Johnson. And Gary Johnson, long shot for sure, just keeps making more sense every time I hear about him. But Romney, sorry, he's a suit. We already have one of those.

This guy don't get it, Obama can't do what he want's. Congress sets the coarse of this country. And you Mr. Romney, like the rest of your GOP goons said on day one that the GOP's agenda was to see Obama fail & make him a one term President. So point the finger at yourself. I guess you think we pay you to bash Obama all day. Cuz that's all the GOP has done for 2 1/2 years. How come you didn't tell people how you were going to fix this country while bashing Obama? You GOP losers just bashed Obama for wanting worker retraining programs in order to pass your crooked trade deals that'll put more Americans out of work. Is that how you're going to fix the unemployment rate, by shipping more jobs overseas and making sure we can't get another one? 8 years of Republican outsourcing and a global meltdown handed to Obama, and you want him to turn it off like a clicking a switch? How can you even think of putting this on Obama? The GOP are the ones that failed the American people. Everything you do is against them. The Gulf oil spill ruined the lives of God knows how many people and you're in Washington trying to help BP get away with it. You make me sick!

Please tell Obama he can't do what he wants. He seems to think he can send America to war without being accountable for it.

The only plan Republicans have to supposedly improve an economy is tax cuts. Right now, taxes are lower than they were under Reagan. That shows that Republican tax policy doesn't fix a broken economy. If tax cuts were the solution, we'd be swimming in jobs right now.

meanwhile protecting Obama as usual the CBS news does not report:
1.Report by Congress' research arm reveals U.S. is providing hundreds of millions of dollars in foreign aid to countries - such as China, Mexico and Egypt - that are lending billions to the U.S.
2. Moody's says it will lower the USA credit rating soon id Obama does not cut spending and the debt limit is not increased which requires the spending to be reduced a proportionate amount and Oama so far has refused to do.
3. more people die in Syria from Govt. killings than in Libya but Obama ,I guess there are no humans in Syria since there is no humanitarian reasons to stop the slaughter as he lied about doing in Libya.
4. Only 37 % of likely voters say they would consider voting for Obama again. While 64 % of registered voters say they will not.
5. The ongoing fears of a second recession continues as unemployment is expected to rise again above 9 % and the weekly jobless claims climb once again above 400,000

There are many more but you get the IDEA PROTECT OBAMA at all cost and to hell with the news that the American people deserve to hear.

Too bad Romney and the republicans have convenient amnesia. It was the republicans that squandered the nation's treasure ($2 trillion on 2 wars) and failed to get Osama Bin Laden, the USA's number 1 enemy. Isn't that right patriots? The Great Recession started in 2005 and came as a result of 14 years of republican failed policies and failed governance. Americans will never forget the facts and the republicans hope will happen. Republicans live in a delusional world where they don't hold anyone accountable or take accountability for their actions. Republicans are the wounded adult dysfunctional children of the USA and have not evolved yet to such a level of person hood. Fact: President Clinton left Bush a budget Surplus. Fact: Bush and the republicans squandered the budget surplus and quickly converted it into a huge budget deficit, which they left for Obama, who inherited all of the republicans disasters including a Banking and Financial disaster that threatened to bring the entire world economy down. Fact: The Great Recession began in 2005 when Bush was in office and when Republicans were in control of Congress and had been for the preceding 11 years. Republicans think Americans are stupid and have amnesia like they do. They are dead wrong. One thing Mitt and the republicans cannot run from is the facts of history....their history. Romney was a miserable failure in my state of Massachusetts, where he signed Health Care into law. Mitt cannot run from that fact either. Funny thing is...Health Care in Massachusetts is now the most successful in the USA....98% of our folks are insured....costs are coming down...and it even improved the economy.
