Ex-Secret Service agent Daniel Bongino jumps into Maryland Senate race against Cardin

A former Secret Service agent who has provided protection for President Obama has decided to make a bid for Maryland Sen. Ben Cardin's job.

Daniel Bongino, who resigned from the agency last month, plans to seek the Republican nomination to challenge the freshman Democrat.

The Secret Service traditionally does not look favorably upon former agents who jump into politics and has fought to make sure agents who protect the president are not compelled to testify on conversations they might have overheard to maintain trust, National Journal reports.

Bongino's campaign biography says he worked as an agent for a dozen years after serving in the New York City Police Department.

Bongino "believes in real answers and straight talk and plans to challenge the political establishment directly on the important issues of the day," according to his campaign website.

Former Republican candidate for Maryland Governor Brian Murphy is Bongino's campaign chairman.

MaineVet64 I have one quote for you to remember for the rest of your life. Boy, there is a difference between ignorant and stupid. Ignorance I can cure, stupid is forever.

Let me put this out there, I have a G.E.D. I also own my own company that profited a little over 200K last year. My company employ's twelve people and pays enough to support their families.

Now let me start on a few comments you have made. "GED (Good Enough Degree)" how about I start here. I am sure you meant "Diploma". The reason I mention this is because colleges do not award G.E.D's to people, local school districts do.

Next your comment on June 1st 2011 11:40 AM (I listed the time stamp so you could find the correct one) started with "How Does a Secret Service agent". The word "agent" would also be capitalized as it is apart of a title. That one is just a freebie. If I am going to go on a tirade about a sitting President, I am dang sure to look closer at my grammar.

Finally, I am just trying to help you look a little less ignorant. So here is my last point I will make. Just because you are angry it should not be your goal to anger others. It only takes away from anything you might be able to add and also shows that you have no clue what you are talking about (stupid. Now I am no fan of the current administration, but you need to better understand the current problem before chiming in.

Not all of your comments are without merit; it is just no one cares. You have shown that you are here (www.cbsnews.com) to attempt to change the mood from one of open communication to the lowest common denominator. No one is falling for your anger and angst. Remember Ignorance I can cure, stupid is forever. I hope you have a long life. I wish you better days moving forward. I hope you find someone to help you understand your anger and you learn how to overcome it.

You might want to look closer at your own writing, Shakespeare. First of all, as in the article itself, lower-case is appropriate for "agent." His title actually would be "Special Agent." Secret Service agent is just a description. Got it, genius?

Second, titles are not capitalized when they are used as common nouns, or instead of a name, anyway. So as long as we're being picky about capitalization, your capitalization of "president" in the fourth paragraph is wrong.

Third, grammar and capitalization are too different things, so you were again wrong to call him out on the former when you meant the latter (and again, were wrong there too).

Fourth, it's "employs," not "employ's." You don't use an apostrophe for simple present tense verbs.

Fourth, your post is full of run-on sentences. Unlike imaginary capitalization errors, this is a matter of grammar.

Sixth, the poster you're cricizing is obviously talking about "cowboy" Bush. Bush is not a sitting president.

I think they need to tighten up the standards for GED's in whatever hillbilly area you receieved yours.

No Marine, I am no one but myself, and independent who prefers to think for himself and as such welcomes intelligent discourse on the issues and topics that affect us all. Sadly, it would appear that you are incapable of that, choosing to wander off whatever topic an article is about, and using this forum to do nothing but spew belittling comments toward anyone whose opinion you perceive to be different than your own. By doing so, you denigrate the process and diminish the value of your own commentary. I also served, and thus participated in defense of the right to free speech. Fortunately I also have the right to ignore the ignorant, which is what I will now go back to doing with your drivel.

If we can get someone into office who has seen the worst side of politics, why not? Can he do worse then the jokers we have in now. Republicans are not enemies of the middle class. Union leadership is by pricing their members out of jobs. If 2 carpenters of equal quality come to do a job, you'll probably give the job to the lowest bidder. Public employee unions have priced themselves out of the market due to the greedy leadership, and have prevented efficiencies to be implemented. Union need to be part of the solution. State taxes and regulations are the jobs killers in our states.

it is funny how an ex-cop and secret service agent would become a republican. after all the attempts to go after police unions and lower pay of federal civil servants, republicans are no friend of middle class people like dan bogino.

Looking for intelligent comments... Instead, the usual vitriol and the lowest common denominator... Sad. So... If there is anyone out there who's worked for the SS, or the presidency, would you weigh in on this? As a teacher I am discouraged from running for the school board. Is this healthy?

You are discouraged once you quit teaching?

Many of our school board members are retired teachers. We feel they know more about what is going on in the actual classrooms.
