John McCain ranked most conservative senator in 2010

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), who was labeled a moderate during his presidential campaign, had one of the most conservative 2010 voting records in the Senate, according to the National Journal.

After reviewing all 96 votes taken in the Senate in 2010, the magazine found that McCain was tied with seven of his colleagues for the largest number of conservative votes taken. He tied with well-known staunch conservatives like Republican Sens. Jim DeMint of South Carolina and John Barrasso of Wyoming. McCain even took more conservative votes than other senators known for their conservatism, like Sens. Tom Coburn of Oklahoma or Jeff Sessions of Alabama.

His record reveals a shift in McCain's relative ideology, according to the National Journal. From 2002 to 2006, McCain was in the middle of the pack -- ranked between the 44th and 49th-most conservative senator, based on his votes. His past voting records only came close to being this conservative once, the magazine reports -- in 1994, when he was the eighth-most conservative.

The National Journal notes that McCain's voting record shifted right in a year in which he faced a tough primary challenge from Tea Party-backed conservative J.D. Hayworth. A spokesperson for McCain told the magazine that it's not McCain's ideology that has shifted, but rather the Senate agenda.

The magazine has ranked congressmen by their voting records for three decades and explains their methodology here.

The 10 most conservative senators in 2010 were: Sens. John Barrasso (R-Wyo.), Saxby Chambliss (R-Ga.), John Cornyn (R-Texas), Mike Crapo (R-Idaho), Jim DeMint (R-S.C.), John McCain (R-Ariz.), Jim Risch (R-Idaho), John Thune (R-S.D.), Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) and Roger Wicker (R-Miss.).

The 10 most conservative House members in 2010 were: Reps. Trent Franks (R-Ariz.), Sam Johnson (R-Texas), Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), Doug Lamborn (R-Colo.), Randy Neugebauer (R-Texas), Jean Schmidt (R-Ohio), Pete Olson (R-Texas), John Boehner (R-Ohio), Bob Latta (R-Ohio) and John Culberson (R-Texas).

National Journal will publish its list of the most liberal congressmen and senators tomorrow.

The most conservative voting record in the Senate in 2010? What a shame!

Senator McCain -- Mr. Maverick -- abandoned all principles and swung hard to the right. No wonder the State of Arizona has become such a joke and a den of rightwing nutty and cray anti-human-decency ideas. Senator McCain must have been infected with Palinitis, a particularly nutty virus that turns decent and reasonable people into obscene and unreasonable opportunists. Palinitis turns mavericks into ridiculous and petty right wing kooks.

The senior Senator from Arizona has done a great diservice to his own record and his own home state. He has ruined a good name and a good career.

But its not too late. Senator McCain can champion immigration reform like he did before being infected with Palinitis. He can speak out against Tea Party violent rhetoric. He can put an end to the birthers insane fixation with wishful thinking by telling these right wing extremists that he (McCain) was born in Panama not in the good old USA. Senator McCain can stop cuddling a greedy and petty Sarah Palin, and get back into the mainstream of reasonableness. It's never too late to stand up, and lead as an honorable and reasonable men should.

Common John, write a different chapter in the story of your life. Don't go down without fighting curing yourself of Palinitis.

You bet he is a conservative! I live in his state and it is embarrassing! Our schools can't get the needed funding! Our jobs
pay nothing. (Teachers making 27 thousand a year and than they wonder why we are last in education) Our legislators care more
about thumping on their bibles than improving the quality of life of their citizens. The only legislation they seem to be able to write
is designed to chip away at abortion or chasing Mexicans back across the border. McCain is a very influential man among Arizona Legislators
and he does nothing to correct their over-the-top behavior. Arizona is the New Mississsippi...Nothing to be proud of...Just be glad he did not become your President!

It's too bad that Palin's smarter than Biden and Obama combined....

That is an ASTOUNDINGLY stupid statement.
Why do you imply you are a professor ???
You apparently do not remember English 101 rules for writing.

First of all, the statement is grammatically correct... especially as far as forum postings go. Yours didn't even include complete sentences.

Second, the statement on its face is not any more stupid than yours... but, ultimately, is far more accurate.

The sad truth is that you Lefties still do not know the difference between Sarah Palin and Tina Fey; never mind have the ability to discern character or intelligence. You constantly strut around referring her stupidity as if its a foregone conclusion in a vain attempt to use peer pressure to create that perception. Ayn Rand called this "The Argument From Intimidation". There is no intellectual substance behind any of it. You substitute the jeering of a bunch of simpletons for political discourse.

And since you generalize about all liberals, your argument is illogical. I do have to wonder about your critical judgement if you truly think Palin is smarter than Obama. She has only superficial knowledge of most subjects about which she's pontificated. She doesn't seem to be able to go much deeper than simple buzz slogans in interviews. Which leads to the question: on what evidence do you base your claim that she's smarter than a law professor like Obama?

How many houses does he own, sure would be a shame if he had to have one less and pay a fair share of taxes.

prof_robinson replies:

Right, because in your world the numbers of houses has some bearing on his "fair share". The fact that they might be rental properties doesn't occur to you at all. Whatever you consider a "fair share" - 20, 50, 100% - I'm willing to wager that you don't pay it... because one thing I've learned about Leftists is they always grumble about everyone else's "fair share". When you start voluntarily sending more of your money to the treasury, then I'll start to listen.

It's too bad that Palin's smarter than Biden and Obama combined, then. Biden alone is a gaff-o-matic of epic proportions. After Obama's done destabilizing the entire middle east and destroying our domestic energy production, he can go on another tour of all 57 states and spread the wealth around some more. Then Biden can remind us all about what a big f'in deal it all is. $4.2 trillion later, and I'm still waiting for that 8% unemployment we were promised in 2009. What a joke.
