John Bolton: Egyptian Democracy May be Bad News

WASHINGTON - Former U.S. ambassador John Bolton said in a speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference Saturday that Americans should be wary of the fall of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, arguing that it could lead to the country falling in the hands of anti-American Muslim extremists.

It is the "responsibility of our government to protect our interests and our values and our friends and our allies," Bolton said. Referencing former President Theodore Roosevelt, he added  that "first and foremost we must make the world safe for ourselves."

Mubarak's fall may end up making America less safe, Bolton said, because in a democracy a radical group like the Muslim Brotherhood may end up in power. He warned of the threat of "rising radicalism in the Middle East" and said Sharia law could soon be imposed on Egypt's citizenry.

"We have to have a careful and prudent approach to these developments, because we've seen revolutionary situations go wrong too many times before," said Bolton, pointing to the Nazis, Hamas and Hezbollah.

Bolton, who is considering a GOP presidential run, said that democracy is "a way of life," not simply a political system. "We have to acknowledge that a Democratic election can produce illiberal results," he said.

The former ambassador argued that allowing the Muslim Brotherhood to participate in Egyptian elections is putting the country on the "road to disaster," and suggested the Obama administration has been "hesitant, inconsistent, confused and just plain wrong" in its handling of the situation in Egypt.

To a standing ovation from the conservative activists gathered for the conference, Bolton described President Obama as "weak, indecisive and apologetic."

Bolton said he does not believe Mr. Obama cares about foreign policy because it gets in the way of his priority of "nationalizing our health care system." He attacked the Director of National Intelligence, James Clapper, for suggesting the Muslim Brotherhood is a largely secular organization, saying the reason he opposes Clapper's resignation is because "in this administration, we could get somebody worse to replace him." Bolton also attacked the administration for its handling of Russia and its passage of the New Start missile treaty.

Taking a stand against the call by Libertarian-leaning Republicans like Ron Paul to reduce defense spending, Bolton said it is "not the time for indiscriminate budget cuts in our national defense budget."

He said that domestic spending and entitlement programs should be cut instead, stating, "A dollar well spent on defense is much more important than a dollar well spent in the agriculture department or the interior department."

Bolton was one of a number of potential Republican presidential candidates to address the conference, a gathering of about 11,000 conservative activists which wraps up Saturday afternoon.

Some of the people commenting here are unaware of their history, the Lebanon "democratic" elections that led to muslim theocratic totalitarian dictatorship, which is also racist, genocidal and denies further elections. The same is true in Gaza with Hamas. Democracy is antithetical to islam, they are opposing views, and CAN NOT coexist. Look at the birthpains in Iraq. I would recommend those commenting on how good the Egyption revolution is, should read the koran.

Has anyone noticed how the countries uprising in the Middle East are US friends? Wake up America. We had better start defunding muslim countries that birth jihadist for WORLD domination, like the Nazis. We will find ourselves in another war soon, if we don't wake up!

Yep, that would be why one of the largest (and stable) democracies on Earth is 86% Muslims.

And it certainly explains how the number of world democracies AND the Islamic religion are both growing.

Facts, they are such stubborn little things.

Well yeah John, it's because Egypt might go against your giant corporation capitalist, anti-democratic dream for the world. This moron Bolton must get his views from the insane morons Limbaugh and Beck. How else would you explain this level of ignorance and stupidity?

I believe YOU don't know what your talking about, catch up on your history in the Lebanaon, Gaza and Iran, and their 'democratic' transitions, before you reveal your ignorance on the topic.

Hahahahaha - Awesome! Bolton stating outright that he preferred a autocratic dictator who tortured and imprisoned his own people after saying that invading Iraq was a good idea because an autocratic dictator was removed from power at the cost of 3 trillion dollars and upwards of 5000 American lives. LOL How does that make one ounce of sense?

What do you expect from an insane, violent, frightened neo conservative? A human response. This guy is only a very small step above the clueless, brainless Palin. And I mean a very small step.

Ugh I can't take it anymore when people like John Bolton say Obama wants to "nationalize our health care system." First of all, the health care reform that passed was a conservative "free market" solution that had been proposed by Republicans all the way back to Nixon. It's better than nothing but why are Republicans against their own proposals? The "public option" is also not nationalizing our health care system. Medicare for all, a real solution that would both control costs and cover everyone, is also not nationalizing our health care system. It simply replaces inefficient bloated insurance company bureaucracy with something more cost effective. Turning us into the UK, where the government administers and collects payments, runs the hospitals, and pays the doctors and nurses ... THAT would be "nationalizing health care," and I haven't heard anyone propose we do that. That's miles away from what Obama and the Democrats have done.

Well, that's how much you know about the topic, when two courts have found the law unconstitutional, forcing citizens to buy a government plan. Replacing 'inefficient'insurance companies to a nationalized health plan is EXACTLY what Obamacare was intended to do, or didn't you know that Barak Husein Obama is a kensysian socialist? You had better get informed before making a fool of yourself. The UK is currently going bankrupt, just like the other socialist countries including Greece. Please read the news. Government under Obamacare would have the LAST word in any and all treatments, with vito powers to arrest and to dictate to one 'free market' insurance company what it could or could not do, taking away the liberty of patient, doctor, insurance company and hospitals. So you see, the 2000 pages NO ONE HAS READ, and we have to wait to enact to know what is in it, per Pelosi, is indeed a tyranical attempt at government control of health care.
You should become more informed about the bill before flouting its merits, which it DOES NOT HAVE.

I guess you would prefer Pelosi ("we have to enact the Obamacare Health plan to know what is in it"). Yeah, that would be great!

Yes - we've certainly seen democratic elections produce illiberal results, just look at the U.S. House of Representatives. Mr. Bolton is not a fan of democracy here, either. He knows whats best for everyone else. If he ever asked himself WHY democratic elections bring groups like Hamas and Hezbollah to power, he have to admit that American policies in the Middle East STINK, and have for a long time. He can't do that, so he has to blame the process and the extremism of the other side. America of course, can do no wrong.

The US House went down the crapper in 2008, but we're trying ur best to correct that.

Now then, I'm trying to think of a policy we could have formulated that would have resulted in Hamas and Hezbollah not taking over. The only thing I can think of is by supporting pro-American leaders who oppose Hamas and Hezbollah.

Is that what you had in mind? No? Then go ahead, share your plan, I'd like to hear it.

The House went down the crapper in 2006 with a democratic mayority, and then the Executive crowned the crapper in 2008, and here we are!!!!

In 2006-7 they resisted every attempt to audit Fanny Mae and Freddie Mac, but they, of course, are blameless!

Herein lies America's problem with the world. In one word "hypocrisy" - either we are the sponsor of Democracy or we ain't. The idea that there exist a muddled-middle-ground where only some people should not be allowed to be free is insane.

You mean like the policy that Obama pursued towards Egypt as opposed to the way he reacted toward Iran in 2009? The thing is, he should have reacted differently in each case, but he screwed up and kept his hands off Iran while mucking about in Egypt's affairs. He got his regimes reversed and failed to support the Iranians while giving the Egyptians moral support. So today we have Mubarek out while Ahmadnejad is still in power. Not the end result I would have expected from a US President.
