Barbara Bush Comes out for Gay Marriage (Video)

Barbara Bush has become the latest daughter of a prominent Republican politician to come out in favor of same-sex marriage.

In a video recorded for gay-rights advocacy group The Human Rights Campaign, the 29-year-old daughter of former President George W. Bush says she believes gay residents of New York, where she lives, should have the right to get married.

"New York is about fairness and equality. And everyone should have the right to marry the person that they love," she says in the video, before imploring viewers to "join us."

Meghan McCain, former of 2008 Republican presidential nominee John McCain, has also come out in favor of same-sex marriage, as has her mother Cindy. Dick Cheney's daughter Mary, a lesbian, also supports gay marriage, and her father does as well. And Laura Bush, the former first lady, said in May that couples that "are committed to each other and love each other" should have "the same sort of rights that everyone has."

"Bush's advocacy shows that equality knows no party label and raises the profile of this timely fight for equal marriage rights in the Empire State," the Human Rights Campaign said.

As president, George W. Bush pushed for a Constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage, and Republicans depended on gay marriage referenda to drive out conservative turnout in election years.

Barbara has had gay friends dating back at least to her time at Yale University, and her support for same-sex marriage comes as no surprise to her friends. She used to take one gay friend to the White House for dinner with her family when she was in Washington.

Rightwing Christians please note your presidents are only paying lip service to your moral choices to get elected. They do not subscribe to them anymore than the educated contingent of any political persuasion.

And she kept quiet while her father encouraged the right wing christian extremists and used federal money to fund the export of their twisted hate-filled ideology to places like Uganda.

Will we hear claims in 10-20 years that GW's alcohol and drug use caused so much brain-damage that he should be excused for his crimes?

Despite his recorded coffession of drug use, he still does not asmit to it, or to any of other continous flow of lies he told & still tells. I heard him this last week on NPR, claiming that he was raised in a family that was highly religious and deticated to public service. The Bush clan has been born to and married to money grubbing before W was born. What a sack of Chaney.

So it is big news when a young person not in a political office has a different view from her parent or parents. That is shocking news. Shocking also because the media is jumping on it to shove a stick into her fathers eye, and the republicans back side. The drive by will come up with anything to belittle the republican party. Why dont' they try to figure out where Barack's birth certificate is or went to?

crazyname, you actually say the media will come up with anything to belittle the republican party, then accuse Obama of not being an American...brilliant! Are you serious or are you just trying to make conservatives look worse than they already do?

A good comment maybe, but remember the covertly rascist comments she made about the poor people that could not get out of New Orleans during Katrina? Madam Bush showed neither intelligence, ethics, morals nor compassion.
