Obama: My "Biggest Disappointment" is Not Passing DREAM Act

CBS

President Obama and Democrats managed to pull off an unusually successful lame-duck congressional session, but a number of the president's goals still fell by the wayside, among them energy and climate change legislation, collective bargaining for firefighters and safety workers and closing the prison at Guantanamo Bay.

That's not all: At a press conference today, Mr. Obama said "maybe my biggest disappointment" was not passing the DREAM Act, an immigration measure to give upstanding undocumented immigrants who were brought to America as children a pathway to citizenship.

Even though advocates of the measure suspect it has virtually no chance of revival under a Republican-controlled House, Mr. Obama insisted he's not ready to give up on it. If there's anything people should have learned during the lame duck session, he said, it's that "I am persistent. If I believe in something strongly, I stay on it. And I believe strongly on this."

The DREAM Act would have created a pathway to citizenship for young people who entered the United States before age 16, had a high school degree or the equivalent, had no serious criminal record, and met other criteria, including agreeing to complete two years of college or military service. The measure has had varying levels of bipartisan support, but Republicans in the Senate managed to kill the bill with a filibuster this month.

The bill was perceived as Democrats' last shot at fulfilling their promise to Hispanic voters to act on immigration reform, something they had promised to do this year.

"I am determined to get immigration done," Mr. Obama said today. "It is the right thing to do... We need to reform this immigration system so we are a nation of laws and we are a nation of immigrants."

The DREAM Act -- "at minimum" -- must be passed, he added.

The president said he would continue to engage with Republicans on the issue. "Some of them in their heart of hearts know it's the right thing to do," he said of the DREAM Act. The president said politics have gotten in the way.

"That may mean we have to change the politics," Mr. Obama said.

The president said he would spend more time engaging with the American people on the issue so the DREAM Act could win stronger public support -- and thus more Republican votes. He spoke of the letters he receives from young people who simply want to stay in the United States as productive members of society.

"They're dreaming about college, suddenly they come to 18, 19 years old, and they realize, 'even though I feel American, I am an American, the law doesn't recognize me as an American. I want to go college to better myself, and I'm at risk of deportation," Mr. Obama said. "And it's heartbreaking."

He continued, "That can't be who we are...I think if the American people knew any of these kids -- they probably do, they just may not know their status-- they'd say, 'of course we want you.'"

Republicans have repeatedly said that the U.S.-Mexican border must be entirely secure before any conversation about immigration reform can move forward. The president said in his press conference that his administration has done more on border security than other administration in recent years but allowed, "If they've got ideas for more on border security, I'm happy to have that conversation."

Not a surprise that he supports foreigners who have no respect for our laws. His illegal immigrant aunt from Kenya has mooched off taxpayers for years. I understand Obama couldn't scrape up one dime to help her out so she wouldn't be a burden on U.S. taxpayers, too. Like she said, "It's a free country."

what affect will the dream act have on the healthcare plan, and has adding these "new citizens" been figured into the cbo score?

Yep. President Obama "dreamed" to create more Democrats out of the vast pool of illegal immigrants for the 2012 election. My sister-in-law became a US citizen the legal way, and these people are no better than she. Why is it fair for her to go the legal route, requiring years, and these people be given a pass?

Because, this particular group or classification of illegal aliens completely qualify to be naturalized citizens if, there were to go through the process that is at this time overloaded with proposed immigrants. Categorization of the different levels of immigrants needs to be addressed to remove qualified candidates from the vast roles.

Your sister-in-law could have qualified with her college degree, or service to the military given that she has lived (as an American) for at least 15 years?.

The Dream Act is a start to immigration reform that should include border permeability (in both directions) and, deportation of criminals and unproductive aliens.

Perhaps, President Obama should listen to the legal American citizens and BUILD THE FENCE and stop the flow of illegals into our country. Just mabey , the the legal Americans would have a mind to "chat" about the illegal alien children. Mabey if our lawmakers could write bills with out all of the undermining loopholes in them that make them lies to the legal American citizens, the legal Americans would have heart and at least listen.

What President Obama and supporters of the DREAM Act and "comprehensive immigration reform" fail to realize is that the reason that their arguments don't fly with the vast majority of Americans is that they just plain don't like the attitude of people who are not U.S. citizens who find it to be too inconvenient to obey our immigration laws, brazenly break our immigration laws en masse and then have the nerve to claim that we are not being "fair" or "moral" with them or their children after they have been here for a while illegally.

No U.S. citizen dragged either them or their parents across the U.S.-Mexico border and they did NOT have any right to cross that border illegally just because some U.S. business was willing to hire them to work here illegally. Their predicament is a consequence of either their own decisions and actions or the decisions and actions of their parents...and no one else.

On top of that, we are then lectured by the hypocritical leaders of Mexico about our immigration policies when their immigration laws are extremely harsh by comparison...including imprisonment.

That attitude represented by the arguments for passage of the DREAM Act and "comprehensive immigration reform" is just not credible. That's why the whole issue is just a non-starter...starting with the attitude of those whose only goal is to legalize...sooner or later and by any means...their illegal actions.

Obama ran on another one of his promises to have a comprehensive immigation bill in front of congress in one year. This bill that failed wasn't even close. It was an after thought to keep folks quite. Obama maybe able to fool some folks, but most know this is just another example of how he does not keep his campaign promises just like his support of giving the rich tax breaks while we are going down the drain with debt. He also said that he would close Gitmo in one year, did you hear him making excuses of that today.

OK. I give up. Give the students who were bought here illegally by their parents amnesty. Now let's get rid of the parents and every other illegal alien. No Chain migration. Will you agree with that? We'll keep a million of the illegal alien students and get rid of the other 19 million. How's that La Raza?
