How Jerry Brown Beat Meg Whitman in California
California Gov.-elect Jerry Brown celebrates his election win during a rally with his wife, Anne Gust, in Oakland, Calif., Tuesday, Nov. 2, 2010.
/ AP PhotoThis is a very good night for Jerry Brown. In spite of Republican Meg Whitman spending more than $140 million of her own money to try and become the first female governor in California, the voters decided that experience was more important than touting being an outsider.
Whitman was CEO of eBay and made the company a billion dollar company. But Brown exploited his experience that would make him an asset in dealing with the problems that California is facing. As a matter of fact, Brown would use his four decades in politics in California as a positive - he wouldn't have to learn on the job and he had the means to make government work - when he left the governor's office in 1984, he left a budget surplus. Besides governor, he was the state's Attorney General and Mayor of Oakland. The voters tried an outsider when they elected Arnold Schwarzenegger as governor, but he hasn't lived up to expectations. His job approval rating is hovering around 29 percent, close to the 24 percent that former governor Gray Davis had before he was recalled.
Full California Election Results
Complete Election ResultsIt was a brutal campaign on both sides and when both candidates were asked if they would forego negative advertising, Whitman declined, which turned voters off. In addition, her campaign hit a road bump when her housekeeper was discovered to be an illegal immigrant. Whitman denied that she knew she was undocumented, but when she found out, she let her go immediately. However, it was shown that Whitman did know years before about her housekeeper's status, but only let her go when she began running for governor. This rankled the Latino community -while she was feverishly courting them with Spanish language billboards and ads on Spanish TV. Whitman said she would need to get at least 35 to 36 percent of the Latino vote in order to win the election. But this incident did not help. About 22 percent of the electorate is Latino and she almost reached her goal. In preliminary results, the CBS News exit poll shows that she got roughly three out of 10 Latino votes.
Whitman wasn't the only one with a glitch in her campaign. One of Brown's aides called Whitman a whore in the context of excluding police and firefighters from her pension reform platform. She got their endorsements).
Some demographics that decided the governor's race:
- Men gave Brown a three point advantage, while women supported Brown by 16 points (56 percent vs. 40 percent)
- Whites, as in the Senate race, support the Republican candidate, giving Whitman a 52 percent to Brown's 45 percent lead. Blacks make up about one in 10 voters and they overwhelmingly support Brown by 77 percent. Almost two-thirds of Latinos backed Brown.
- All age groups but those 65 and over support the Democratic candidate.
- All income groups except for those households with incomes of $100,000 or more support Brown. The wealthier voters supported Whitman.
- All education levels - college and non-college graduates support Brown
- Interestingly about 27 percent are declined-to-states (independents) and they are supporting Whitman by seven points. In a 2006 CBS News exit poll, the DTS voters gave Schwarzenegger a 26 point advantage over his Democratic opponent - they were 25 percent of the electorate.
- If the voter believed government should do more to solve problems, 41 percent, most of them back Brown, while voters who believe government is doing too many things, 53 percent, a huge majority is supporting Whitman.
- More than half, 53 percent, of voters say that the one contest on the ballot that mattered most was the governor's race and they are supporting Brown over Whitman by 62 percent to 35 percent.
- 54 percent say they want an insider who knows how to get things done and 71 percent of this group supported Brown.
The CBS News exit poll was conducted by Edison Research for the National Election Pool. Results are based on 3,814 voters in California interviewed either after exiting the polls across the state or by telephone for early voters. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus two percentage points.

- I am very happy Jerry Brown has won. California was a wonderful place to live under him as Governor for two terms. He was fiscally conservative and left a budget surplus when he left. He revitalized Oakland which was the armpit of the Bay area and too scary to drive through. he reduced crime by 13% and revitalized the downtown making it desirable to live and work there again. I love it there now. Those that criticize never quote facts, just attack like Meg whitman did. she should have donated that money back to ebay to rehire their customer service dept which was all laid off, all 10% of ebay's job force which paid her golden parachute. The woman didn't even have the courage to concede to Jerry Brown directly, instead she called his wife...lack of class on that one. Just like Fiorina who waited til the following day even though she clearly had lost on election day. She never even conceded to Boxer..another lack of class...two spoiled children who aren't used to not getting their way. Grow up ladies and play nice for a change. What made you think you could buy Californians. Arnold tried and he is at 29% approval rating for the poor job he did here, or the lack of doing his job here.

- I find it ludicrus that a candidate for office in the United States has to communicate with others through a language that is not English. If someone is eligible to vote they must be a citizen. If they are naturalized citizens then they must know English. How degrading and condescending to speak with Latinos who are citizens of this country in Spanish. Disgusting! (I lived in California for 15 years. Terrible place to live.)

- He was called "gov Moonbeam" for a reason. I thought the voters here would remember how much of a loon this guy was and how his failures as gov then, and as mayor of Oakland and as AG would have at least stoppd them from voting for him. Prop 19 may have been defeated, but the dopers got even by giving us Brown and Boxer!

- I was around when Brown was governor and he did a great job for both terms. We had jobs and everyone wanted to move here because it was so great. YOu aren't specifying what failures you think he had. We had a budget surplus when he left office after Reagan left him with a huge deficit. He revitalized Oakland and brought money and jobs there while reducing crime by 13%. I wouldn't go to Oakland before he was mayor. I got lost on the freeway and got off at an exit and was scared to death. Not any more. they were a city in major decline and it is revitalized now and a desirable place to live. So, I have no idea what "failures" you are talking about. My guess is you are watching too many attack ads. He has been described by a prominent Republican as more fiscally conservative than Reagan even was...do your research before spouting off.

- I think it is a bad day when you can't even count count on the snakes to come through. Do you think Jerry will be able to get his old room across from the capital back and maybe that cool grey plymouth is still in the motor pool. Good job Brownie! Woops, that was the other guy. Good luck CA, you will need strong leadership to work out of the hole you are in. I hope Brown is up to the job.
