Exit Poll: Lower Turnout Among Youth and Black Voters

Based on CBS News' preliminary national exit polling, Republicans are poised for significant gains in Congress. The youth vote--18-to-29-year-olds--who helped catapult President Obama into office makes up an estimated 9 percent of voters this year, compared to 18 percent in 2008. About 58 percent of the youth vote favors Democratic candidates.

Independents make up an estimated 28 percent of voters in the early exit polls, with 39 percent voting Democratic and 56 percent Republican. 

Black voter turnout also appears to be lower during the midterm election. An estimated 10 percent of blacks are voting, compared to 13 percent in 2008. The exit polling found 8 percent of voters are Hispanic, with 66 percent voting Democratic.

In addition, men are voting more Republican, 55 percent compared to 43 for the Democrats. Among women, Democrats have a one point edge, 49% are voting for Democrats and 48% for Republicans. In 2008, more women voted Democratic. In 2002, women voted 49 percent Republican and 49 percent Democratic.

It is interesting that women voters favored the Democrats by a small margin and that white men favored the GOP by a substantial margin, as did Independents, who two years ago had broken significantly for Democrats. Things are in decided flux, the least so, it appears among women.

When the economy crashed in the fall of 08' I'm satisfied this event was anticipated to occur on the next presidency but it didn't. It fell at the end of the Bush term. In 1929 when the market crashed. The republicans had full control for good solid two years. It left an indelible mark on generations to follow. The school of hard knocks is what it sometimes takes.

I pay my premiums too into this private for profit "risk" pool. When one gets sick, the others are burdened by the fact they pay premiums to take care of that one. The private for profit insurance cartel readily takes premiums but illness in the risk pool is a threat to the bottom line. That's why it will over time become ever more crucial for this cartel to take your money while you're healthy and dump you onto the taxpayer should you get really sick.

That's our system. We the people waste alot of money making a few grow even more wealthy over time. Yes a few get really wealthy. Not everyone was welcome to participate in the Bernie Madoff ponzi scheme. Ponzi schemes don't make everyone wealthy. Eventually this country will collapse under these social scams.

I'm pleased to live in Washington state. Many smart people live here and the voting shows it. Washington has a strong economy but this state has faced budget crunches due to the the banking cartel heist like all other states.

Due to this, I strongly advocate there be a federal initiative to end the socialism and redistribution of wealth that subsidizes states who don't turn a profit like the southern states and red states in general.

It is not right that blue states in general are having their wealth redistributed to weak states that don't pull their weight. Let's run this like a business.

I don't like the private for profit insurance companies having government mandated customers. That's why we need single payer. Healthcare should not be a private sector concern. I work in a hospital and I see and know the reality. Until we as a nation allow people to lie around dying in our streets or hauling them off in box cars to the ovens (both do involve overhead) we the tax payer will be paying.

This article makes a very simple, but substantive, error: "An estimated 10 percent of blacks are voting, compared to 13 percent in 2008." No, an estimated 10 percent OF VOTERS are black, compared to 13 OF VOTERS in 2008. Over 60% of blacks voted in 2008. In fact, black women voted at a higher rate than any other demographic. Please correct this error, CBS.
